  1. I feel like some of the map stories would require contrivances in order to happen anyway. The map honestly doesn't bother me the way it does for some people. It's mission control. It's like any show that has a character sitting at a computer who says "There's been reports of people going missing over in blah blah blah, you should go investigate. There's been weird energy readings over in yadda yadda. Send a team to report." It's like that but with every aspect of the story being a mystery to uncover. And I don't think any new race but the Kirin has been introduced via the map. Unless I'm really forgetting some stuff. Like, the entire student 6 were introduced outside of a map episode. Ember and Thorax were introduced outside of map episodes. Cozy wasn't a map ep, nor Neighsay, nor the Pillars. Who the map chooses to summon would bother me more if the map was demonstrating inconsistancy. But it isn't. It's been expanding it's reach steadily, and everytime something particularly noteworthy happens, Twi makes reference to it (like, she's stunned when it summons Starlight. She mentions that the map is "really branching out" with Spike, she mentions that Sunburst is the first person to be summoned outside of Ponyville). The Map is expanding in what it can do, which was confirmed in What Lies Beneath. This fits thematically with the show in my opinion. Friendship is being passed on. The cast needed to pass on the traits of the elements to gain the keys to open the box back in season 4. The map expanded it's reach when the cast traveled beyond Equestria. The map started calling on people who were close to the Mane Cast and touched by them (Starlight, Spike, the CMC), now it's calling people to it from greater distances. (Sunburst). Then in School Raze we saw the tree give it's blessing to a group made up of all kinds of races not living in Equestria. Harmony is growing. It wants to be paid forward.
  2. From my read, I think the switch is supposed to be when Twilight drops the "She won't be the only one who gets hurt if that happens." line. Before that she's mostly jealous. After that line it seems to get to her a little bit, and she's mostly genuinely concerned. When she goes to see Lightning she even says that her plan was to apologize to Scootaloo for trying to make her stop liking the Washouts. So at that point in the story Dash was willing to at least accept the Washouts and accept that Scootaloo liked them. From there the only reason they both turn is because Lightning almost gets Scoot killed.
  3. But who actually knew of these things? If the mane 6 didn't tell anyone about the magic key that conveniently exploded, or that it was Cozy who pointed them towards Tartarus, then where's the trail one could follow back to Cozy?
  4. She was ready to banish him (her horn was charging) when he implied he wasn't going to stop endangering the students. Spike tried to calm the situation down, but Discord went on to insult her. She was already pissed off at him. The insult just sent her over the edge.
  5. Didn't she banish Discord for pissing her off on top of endangering the students? I feel like if she actually tried to murder someone the episode would've made more of a deal about it.
  6. I really liked the student 6. In fact I thought they were some of the best parts of season 8. So I don't want them to go away entirely.
  7. For me personally: To Change a Changeling. Because when you first read the synopsis, the whole thing sounds like it could be an unmitigated disaster. It was dealing with a whole powder keg of unresolved issues that were left in the wake of TWABA. And then it came out, and it was not only one of my favourite Starlight performances (her interplay with Trixie, a well meaning and impulsive plan that didn't involve magic, and her rallying speech to the changelings), but I loved Thorax's continuted appearance as a king and Pharynx as a character. I tend to consider it a pretty underrated episode nowadays. Even for those who didn't like it, it definitely didn't seem to be as massively hated as I'm fairly sure it could've been.
  8. I bizzarely did not hate Applejack's day off. I actually thought season 6 was a great season for Spoiled Milk, between her appearance in that episode and Where the Apple Lies. I wish we could see more of her.
  9. I don't like judging entire seasons of this show. Or rather, I don't like dwelling on it. Because I feel doing that takes away from individual episodes and what they offer. This show in particular is so episodic that I feel you can safely just revisit specific episodes that you liked and ignore those you do not. Doing that has basically left me not hating ANY season of the show, because all I watch again are the episodes I think are good. Like, Season 6. I dont think about 28 Pranks Later or Cart Before the Ponies or Spice up your life, because all I watch are No Second Prances or A Hearthswarming Tail or Saddle Row or other episodes that I liked.
  10. Episode I really like: The Perfect Pear (I feel the episode rides on audience's existing feelings towards AJ's parents, rather than through anything the episode itself does. Pear Butter and Bright MAc are pretty flawless characters and they're not all that interesting. But the fandom already has such strong emotional feelings built up from season 1 that the episode just had to be pretty sappy to be effective.) Episode I really dislike: Honest Apple (I loved Lilly Lace, Inky Rose and Strawberry Sunrise)
  11. Don't tell me what I can and can't enjoy. I enjoyed the hell out of cozy and thought she was the best part of School Raze. I've seen the Omen and I wasn't a big fan of it. If you don't like her, that's fine. But don't incredulously get in my face about liking her. To me she made sense for what the season was building. She's a pony villain to counter Neighsay's racism, and she's a dark product of Twilight's school. Embodying the lessons Twilight sought to teach and twisting them for dark ends. The ultimate counterpoint to the very philosophy of the show.
  12. It was quickly revealed that Discord needed someone to reach out to him. Someone to treat him kindly. Cozy had that for months. The crusaders cared about her. The school cared about her. She wasn't really missing a friend because she already had them. Also, I feel like people who insist that cozy is "just a child" are playing right into her strengths. This child almost brought Equestria to it's knees and is completely undeterred and unrepentant about anything she's done. People think she can't be dangerous, when she IS.
  13. I'd actually argue that Cozy has little in common with Morbucks other than her sheer design. Same with Darla Dimple. Morbucks was a spoiled brat who got by via her vast wealth. Everyone around her knew that she was a brat, they were just too afraid of her money to stand up to her. Cozy was an ambitious schemer who honestly made people think that she was a sweet little girl.
  14. My point is I'm not sure what angle you attack Cozy from. With Discord they had Fluttershy be his friend and he IMMEDIATELY felt so attached to her that he was willing to change his ways just because he risked losing her. When he did betray them, by the time Twilight saw him again he was clearly regretful and sorrowful and felt bad about everything he had done. With Starlight, once Twilight showed her the consequences of her actions, Starlight not only stopped on her own, but gave herself up to any punishment they wanted to give. From an emotional standpoint there's something for Twi to grab onto. There's nothing really there for Cozy. She's not attatched to anything. She doesn't care about anyone. She's not sorry. She's not anything. She was all but telling everyone that if they gave her an inch, she would do it all over again.
  15. I still don't think Cozy has exhibited any of the things other reformed villains have shown. At least not so far. Discord had never had a friend before. Cozy had plenty of friends who cared for her at Twi's school. Starlight never really learned what friendship was and was sorry for what she did. Cozy cackled as she tried to escape and was the ace student at a literal school for friendship.
  16. Oh, once Neighsay got to Celestia her plan was screwed, but that wasn't what she was originally aiming for. She actually wouldn't need to dance around Twilight. Twilight (and Starlight according to Cozy) chose to go off and inspect Tartarus of their own free wills, but ended up becoming trapped inside because they lacked magic. It's tragic, but it'd be a stretch for anyone to blame Cozy for it. Especially since Twilight never mentioned where she got the idea that the threat might be tirek.
  17. That's the point though. Cozy's a very persuasive pony. The assumption is she would be able to sweet talk and charm the majority of people into siding with her once the strongest magics were neutered and people became scared and confused. Especially if she had the backing of a respected institution like Princess Twilight's School of Friendship. Do you honestly think she couldn't play Mayor Mare like a fiddle if she wanted to? She wouldn't be a straight conqueror. She'd likely continue doing what she did with Twilight. Worm her way into being loved and trusted, then taking over.
  18. I feel like a lot of people on both sides seem to partially miss the point a lot of the time. They seem to think that either Dash is completely selfless or completely selfish. When I honestly think it's supposed to be a mixture. In fact, the damage done by Dash's ego is what causes Scoots to reject her even after Dash's motives shift to being more benign. Which I think happens after the discussion with Twilight in the clouds.
  19. It's implied that she was using the crisis to come off like a hero. Also, if no one had magic, then no one would be able to stand up to her empire of "friends." With the planes evened as it were, then the strongest would be whoever can convince the most people to be on their side. Plus, it allowed her to trap the mane 6 in Tartarus.
  20. Speak for yourself. Zephyr is one of the greatest things to have ever existed. =P
  21. I always liked the smaller, easy to miss moments where, like, Soarin' would be called by what we later learn to be his nickname, or when we hear Fleetfoot call Dash Crash during a more sincere moment. To forshadow that they aren't calling her that strictly to be assholes.
  22. I mean the sheer mechanics of how Dash became a bolt. She signed up, passed their tests, was a reserve for a while, someone retired into a teaching position, and RD was promoted based on her accolades as a national hero.
  23. I always had a soft spot for Newbie Dash because I loved the ending. And just how banal-y realistic the way Dash became a bolt was.
  24. It's one of those episodes that almost BEGS for the CMC to be drawn as teenagers. If you think of the episode considering Scoots as a TEEN, not as a tiny filly, then it makes so much sense. Including the logic from Twi and later RD that Scoots should be allowed to make her own decisions.
