Looks like we will have to carry two devices. Not that big a deal for me to be honest.

what router/wireless access point do you use?
Pentium100 replied to DJPurplyPi3's topic in Media Discussion
Yea, but a repeater drops your connection speed by half. Then again, even with a proper AP the speed may be bad if there is enough attenuation. Oh, I just though of something. Do you live in an individual house or an apartment? If it's an apartment then you may have problems because of interference from the neighbors, in that case you should look for a less used channel and set the width to 20MHz instead of 40.. -

Get a proper AP then . Bricks do attenuate the signal, but it should not be that much, unless the wall also had metal in it. -
Yea, they probably couldn't get away with that - the E51 is packed more densely. If I absolutely had to have a smartphone, it would probably be some version of xpPhone or the Gemini.

I personally use a Linux server as a router as that allows me the most flexibility. However, such setup is not for everyone, so I have two alternatives I suggest to people: 1. An older PC/server with pfSense installed. Has a lot of features, but has a web interface so it's easier to control than my Linux server. 2. A Mikrotik router. Takes up less space and uses less power than a PC, but also has a lot of features and is very reliable. It may be a little difficult to configure compared to a "normal/crap" router, but that is offset by the fact that you will only reboot it when updating and the fact that you can do a lot with it. For WiFi my recommendations are like this: 1. If you need to cover a smaller area and do not have a lot of WiFi devices, then you can use a Mikrotik router with WiFi, they work great. 2. If you need to cover a large area and require multiple access points because of that, the I would recommend Ubiquiti UniFi series. I personally use a single UniFi Access Point. DISCLAIMER: I do not work for those companies, I am not paid to advertise their products, just that I really like them and will happily suggest them to clients. -

Looking For People With More Interests Than Just MLP
Pentium100 replied to ZomBrony's topic in General Discussion
Do I have interests other than MLP? Yes, definitely. I like listening to music. I have some servers and setting up my system just right is fun (especially nice when it is done). I build and repair electronic devices (really rewarding to see the built/repaired device work), mostly audio stuff and I prefer devices that use vacuum tubes. I like my car and doing some work on it. I also like to watch other movies and TV shows, particularly SciFi or detective stories. I watch anime too. I sometimes play games, mostly shooters and adventure games. I have general interest in old technology and I like steam engines, I drove 800km and paid quite a lot of money so I could drive (and fire) a steam locomotive. -
What pony games do you want to exist?
Pentium100 replied to HelloJinxie's topic in Pony Games, Apps, and Dev Projects
How about a puzzle platformer game like The Lost Vikings, but with ponies? Each pony has different abilities and you need to use them to get all ponies past puzzles. It would go together with the whole "working together" part of the show. I remember playing Vikings a lot, I really liked it. Or an adventure game (point and click or otherwise). I like those types of games. Other than that, I can't think of what game would specifically need ponies in it or, conversely, what game to put the ponies in. -
Yea, make it more similar to the ponies. Put them in the same university. Or, they can be childhood friends who just live close to each other, even if they go to separate universities or work in different places, but hang out together pretty often. I think the school setting is overused. Then again, it may be because I watch anime and a lot of anime that I watch involves a school . It does not help that both the Japanese and the USA versions of the school system are somewhat different from what my school was like, so it is a bit harder to relate.

What is better Equstria Girls or The Ponies?
Pentium100 replied to MLPForLife's topic in Equestria Girls
But the ponies live separately, have their own lives and, I assume, are not together 24/7. However, they live in the same town, so if there is some problem, they can get together. I do not see why this cannot be true for the humans too. Even if they go to separate universities or something they may still live in the same city or come back to the city after finishing university. That's true. Still, 7 friends remaining friends even if they work/learn in different places is not that strange I think. Also, consider that their friendship is, essentially, battle-hardened. -
The fan noise of (some of) my servers. If it changes I may wake up because a changed noise usually means something's wrong. I cannot sleep in total silence so, if I'm on vacation or something, I usually turn on my laptop and sleep listening to its fan noise. OTOH, if the noise is repeating (for example, someone is snoring, a server spinning up and down its fans), then I cannot sleep.

What is better Equstria Girls or The Ponies?
Pentium100 replied to MLPForLife's topic in Equestria Girls
Also, pony Twilight is an adult, while human Twilight is a schoolgirl, though she hopefully is in 12th grade, so, maybe old enough for it to not be weird. But there are exceptions. The human Mane 7 will still most likely be friends. I mean I went to school with my two best friends only until grade 8, after that we went to different schools (and moved to different parts of the city) and different universities. We are still good friends, many years after finishing school and even more years after our last class together. -

Earl Grey tea. For me it's almost always tea (usually Earl Grey or regular black tea, though I also like caraway tea). Sometimes it's Coca-Cola, sometimes it's Baikal (I really like it), but normally tea.

gaming Controversial and Unpopular Video Game Opinions.
Pentium100 replied to RoboGuy9000's topic in Media Discussion
When I was a kid, I had a (probably Chinese) copy of the NES and then a PC. I played everything on a PC (I liked Commander Keen, which is a platformer), so using a gamepad is a bit weird to me. I think Chantelise was a game that made me try using a gamepad (since it was obviously designed for a gamepad and its analog controls), but IIRC playing with a keyboard was still less weird. I sometimes play Recettear (another gamepad-centric game) on my miniPC (GPD WIN) that has a built-in gamepad. It's OK, but no better than a keyboard (better than the tiny keyboard of the GPD though). -

Same here. I prefer keyboard+mouse (or a joystick for flying) instead of a gamepad. I usually play shooters and adventure games, I think that both of them are better with keyboard + mouse and only flighting games are better with a gamepad (which you can plug into a PC as well), though I do not really play them. I do not really have a console (a broken first Xbox that I don't bother to fix or use does not count). I do not like MMOs and games like DOTA and LOL, actually make that most online games. Playing a co-op game with a friend is fun though. I use arrow keys instead of WASD. I dislike VR - tried it, the tech just isn't there. I also dislike motion controls. -
How to build a dreaded antagonist
Pentium100 replied to GoldieS's topic in AK Yearling's Writing Resources
Also, make the villain smart. If he has the biggest army in the world, then maybe he does not need to spend disproportionate amount of resources in trying to build a super weapon or something to take over the world (which leads the heroes to destroy that weapon and defeat him because he has no plan B ). He probably can do it the conventional way. Also, someone like that would not capture and then release the heroes unless he has tricked them into doing his bidding (like Handsome Jack). Think about real life people who are considered evil - like Stalin. If you were enough of a nuisance to him to get noticed, you would end up disappearing - no second chances, no monologues trying to justify himself, nothing. By the way, what made Handsome Jack lose - over reliance on a super weapon and the fact that he left the heroes alive for too long when he could have killed them rather easily by sending lots and lots of robots. Also, the government described in "1984" - how do you even begin to fight against that? -
Yea, after I built the bluetooth adapter for the headset, I don't need to replace the headphone jack. It was easy to replace on the 1100, the headphone jack/charging port/microphone module is not even soldered. It is more difficult to replace on the E51, thankfully I did not have to. Not really IMO. I do not always carry one of them with me, while I carry my phone almost always. So, I would either be taking the SIM card out often or would have to carry the miniPC all the time (and it is bigger and heavier than a phone). And holding the miniPC against my ear would be more uncomfortable than holding a (smaller and lighter) phone. Also, it would be problematic to build such a device - you need a phone battery to last a long time (well, at least a couple of days), but the x86 CPU in a miniPC uses more power than an ARM CPU in a smartphone. For example, the battery in my GPD devices last about 6 hours. Great for a PC, unusable for a phone. So it would have to be a hybrid device, essentially a PC and a phone glued together. But then using the PC and draining the battery would leave me without a phone too. There were attempts to do that, xpPhone is one of them. If you just want normal Linux and do not need x86, then "Gemini" PDA looks interesting, it looks like it has a keyboard that is very similar to Psion Series 5 (which I have an used a lot on the past), that keyboard is really good (at least on the Psion).

What are your favorite video game soundtracks?
Pentium100 replied to Saroth's topic in Media Discussion
I like "Still Alive" from Portal. IIRC some background music In Serious Sam The Second Encounter was cool. Oh, and I really liked the soundtrack in Syberia. -
Nice, I won't be alone Nokia E90, to me, is pretty much the best phone I know of. I can write SMS with its keyboard, it has GPS and it also has limited ability to browse the net. And I found an ssh client that works on it. However, if you want to connect a PC to the internet using this phone, you can, but it will be slow. I have a separate mobile AP for that (and a cheap service since I do not use it much). For work (calls and SMS), I used Nokia 1100 for a long time, but then I had to upgrade to Nokia E51 because there was a need to use VoIP for calls (and 1100 cannot do that). There is no longer such requirement, but I still use this phone for another reason - I can use bluetooth to connect it to my headset instead of wearing out the port on the 1100 (which I had to replace once, I also had to replace the plug a couple of times - 2.5mm jack is not very durable). I still use the 1100 for other stuff though. As for the mini PCs - IMO they are much better than smartphones because they are full featured PCs with full OS (Windows or Linux) instead of limited devices with "apps". And they still fit in my pocket (unlike, say, a tablet). So, if I want to browse the net I get the normal site instead of the "mobile" version or I can do whatever I can do with my normal laptop (even if it is less convenient to type on a tiny keyboard).

Rainbow wasn't out of character in "2, 4, 6, Greaaat".
Pentium100 replied to Shady Mist's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
So, Dash tried to teach flying to a few ponies and also tried to tech sports to one pony. The things she is interested in and is passionate about. That still does not make it OK to force her to teach chess (I imagine Dash would find it boring), properly digging a ditch or cheerleading. And I understand why she is so annoyed the whole episode and acts like that, even though it may not be proper way to act. Not only she was told to do something she has no interest in (and, in turn, prevented from doing something she feels strongly about) but she was also expected to do great at that thing by everyone. "Hey, Rainbow, I know you like sports and competition." "Yep, I'm the fastest pony there is, both at flying and running!" "Great, could you tech this kid how to play chess?" "That's egghead stuff, go ask Twilight!" "Nah, chess is a sport and it's competitive. How different is that from running or flying very fast?"- 52 replies

Nokia E90 as personal phone and Nokia E51 for work (and Nokia 1100 as kind-of backup work phone). I dislike the modern touchscreen phones. I also kinda dislike both Android and iOS. If I need to, I can just use a pocket PC (GPD Win, GPD microPC) to browse the internet etc.
