  1. Nice slippery slope. Anyways, overall, yes. Reality and financial bottom lines mean that it's generally a waste of time for some multi-billion dollar corporation to chase down one or two nobodies over a potential loss of some relatively minor revenue stream. Legally, they are entitled to do so, but financially they often won't (for the reasons you and I already described). I'm not saying it's ethical or unethical, just that it's a viable approach for the people who are just trying to express their artistic appreciation for the product. The wallet analogy is absurd for obvious reasons: the $50 in your wallet is real in your scenario, and Hasbro's $50 is imaginary or based on conjecture. EDIT: for clarification, I never speak in terms of "right" and "wrong" (not in this thread, and not in any other thread)...I'm really only looking at the issue in terms of practicality from a business and legal standpoint. And anyone with a background in legal standpoints can tell you that "right" and "wrong" seldom factor into that equation.
  2. Correct. In the world of intellectual property law, the cold truth is that it's only worth fighting for if winning the fight is more profitable than ignoring it. In many cases, it isn't.
  3. It's a grey area in a financial standpoint, rather than a legal standpoint. By that, I mean they would lose more money by fighting the unofficial product than they would if they ignored it. They know this (which is why they ignore the thousands of unauthorized plushie sales), and only throw their weight around if/when they think they can intimidate the other party.
  4. Meh. If I were the Fighting is Magic director, I would have ignored Hasbro's C&D letter. I would complete the project and release it via Russian and Indonesian hosted web servers. At the end of the day, Fighting is Magic does not cost them a dime in lost revenue. They know this, and they would not pursue international legal action; that would be very expensive, and would gain them nothing. It's unfortunate the the developers were so easily cowed by some lawyers in California who have zero real leverage.
  5. Oh, you kids and your attempts to pass off walls of rambling text as "debate". Gotta get some sleep now. Will make popcorn and catch up tomorrow.

  6. In this thread... One guy from a Fragmented/Unorganized Collective of Kids with Web/Internet Tendencies (henceforth referred to as FUCKWITs) ridicules members of another group (you can guess their name) and jimmies are rustled. Oh, the humanity.
  7. The first time I saw the "road flares dance" (in my dorm room, many MANY years ago) I couldn't stop laughing for like 5 minutes... EDIT: oh, Christ, even now I almost spewed beer out my nose when he smacked his ass with those stupid fingerless gloves
  8. Wow. RHCP is definitely a great band, although I don't quite consider them my all-time favorite. I really liked the whole Californication record, and it was a big turning point for them both commercially and artistically. I guess my favorite song from them has to be "Otherside":
  9. The poll is idiotic. It asks arbitrary questions, and generalizes everything. Whoever made it is simply wasting our time.
  10. Every now and then, I just don't go to work. It's a salary job, so nobody really knows/cares the exact minute I show up, but...I'm still not supposed to do that. Some days this simply isn't an option, but other times, if I'm feeling lazy, and I know there isn't much going on, I'll play hooky.
  11. That's pretty cool. If you have the opportunity to move to a completely different region for the experience of it, go for it! Are you looking to move semi-permanently? If so, the only practical consideration I can bring up for now: do you speak German (Germany, Austria, Belgium), Finnish, Flemish (Belgium), French (also Belgium) or Dutch (Netherlands)? Most Western European nations have a pretty high percentage of English speakers, but visiting and especially living in another country is a whole lot more rewarding if you speak the language comfortably. If so, you'll have a lot of fun. If not, you have a couple years to pick one or two and make a lot of progress.
  12. We're so spread out! It'll be interesting to see what happen with the Renegade Stage at BronyCon this year. I'm not convinced they really know what to expect from it themselves, at this point. Still, it has a lot of potential, and it could let us have a lot of fun outside of the mountain of dubstep and instrumental electronica that constitutes most of the Brony music community.
  13. *shrugs* It's something that almost all of its members grow out of within 5-10 years. It's been around since the 80's or even earlier, but you don't really see any 40 year old goths running around (unless it sustains their millionaire lifestyle, like Robert Smith of The Cure).
  14. My latest project is out: my cover of Papa Roach's "Hollywood Whore", reimagined as "Canterlot Whore." It basically takes the idea that the real Pinkie was banished into the Mirror Pond, and one of her not-quite-right doppelgangers is running free. And things don't go so well for her. Some questionable content (sex, implied substance abuse, rough language, etc). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SytN4Hj0X7I We also did a "making of" video for this one, since it was a little non-standard and included some original live-action footage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXhJjNU--k8 Embedded videos don't seem to be working at the moment.
  15. Still playing Eve, after 5 years. It's held my interest about 4x as long as the closest runner-up. I no longer have the time and energy to survive in w-space, so these days you can generally find me in low-security space doing Black Ops hot drops and of course my favorite pastime of solo hunting. I'm in a corporation with some guys from BerryTube.tv and we're a pretty chill group. If you want to drop in and shoot some fuckers with us (or learn about a variety of aspects within the game) hit me up.
  16. Update: the song is about 90% done and the video is about 60% done. If you have any hooks, animations, lyrics or other ideas to contribute, please speak up now. I expect the final cut to be ready in the next 3 days. Here's a rough idea of where it stands right this minute: http://youtu.be/lrLUwiivnAU
  17. It's almost 2am. I'm drinking absinthe and creating a truly vile music video.

  18. I think the Honorable Hanz Beinholz perfectly conveys a healthy, realistic outlook on death: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwgTfNuijkM#t=167
  19. I hear ya, bruddah. The OP was funny in its over-simplification, but I guess if you didn't grow up with it, it won't make as much sense. Still, a good game, some good friends and some good beer makes for a practically perfect Sunday afternoon.
  20. Sounds like you're referring to the inlay on the 12th fret of @'s Schecter. If a guitar isn't especially high-quality, they can definitely get in the way, especially if you do a lot of bends. I could take it or leave it for the most part. My bass has a skull and crossbones inlay at the 12th, but it only affects the A and D strings, which I don't generally play that far down the neck.
  21. Consider the alternative: in the real world, if a parasite (Parasprite) or rodent (Vampire Fruit Bat) population get out of hand and threatened our crops or settlements, a lot of farmers and residents wouldn't think twice about straight-up killing them. Alternately, some forms of bioengineered corn contain RNA that modifies the DNA of pests who eat the corn. This modification makes them unable to reproduce. That's as close to "magic brainwashing" as it gets in real life, and (for now) it's only used on non-sentient* things like insects. *some would disagree, as this article explores.
  22. A couple days ago I braved the crowds at Guitar Center to get my S7420's whammy fixed. For whatever reason, when Ibanez first started to pair the Floyd Rose 2 bridge with their 7-string models back in 2010, they didn't do much quality assurance on the compatibility of some of the parts. Long story short, I had removed the whammy in order to transport it more safely, and found that it wouldn't go back together. Fortunately, the technician at my local Guitar Center just so happens to have worked on the Ibanez assembly line a couple years ago, so he figured out what had happened. I'm glad he was able to fix it fairly easily, though...I wasn't particularly keen on having to replace the entire bridge (it's like a third of the cost of the entire guitar).
  23. What kind of wanker threatens to quit because they don't like somebody else's idea? If it really bother somebody that much, they should just stfu and leave, while sparing the rest of us their whining.
  24. That might have been the case during the first few months of the first season, but that's hardly a good description of bronydom today. The show has been airing for over 3 years now. Any hipsters who just did it to be different would have long since moved onto something else.
  25. Hello. I have a somewhat strange request today. I'm making a music video for "Canterlot Whore". It's a parody/homage of Papa Roach's "Hollywood Whore", and it takes a look at how things might turn out if they sent the real Pinkie back into the Mirror Pool and kept a dysfunctional clone by accident. She's a mess, completely broken, a lot like PARTY.MOV, yada yada. Anyways, for the cover art of the video I'd like to use a somewhat authentic looking 4Chan style of photograph of a girl with pink hair holding up a sign that reads "Canterlot Whore". Try to keep it at least marginally PG-13/TV-14 (US) or 15 (UK) or whatever comparable content guidelines exist where you're submitting it. If it helps, "trashy" is useful for this project, but "sexual" not so much. Multiple photos would be great, since they could be used throughout the video. Hell, even if you're a guy, a good photo is a good photo, so long as it captures the vaguely tragic/comedic/awkward vibe of the song. Thanks for your help. This photo kind of has what I'm looking for, but I don't plan to use this one, because I have no idea who she is, and I don't want to get sued for labeling her a whore in a video that thousands of people will see. P.S. If the photography subject is not 18 (or legal age within your own country...whichever is higher), I'm afraid I can't use your photo.
