Does Your Ponysona Need to be Exactly Like You?

This question has been lingering in my mind for a while, and I need to finally get it out in topic form. So basically my OC Curly Swirl is considered my Ponysona for me. Although, we're different in many ways... examples are that my real life hair isn't curly, I was never raised on a farm, and I've never had anything really tragic happen to me (yet). But we also have many things in common, such as our height, my favorite color is blue (turqious to the exact, although she's a deeper blue... sorry I know that isn't spelled right), and she suffers from depression as well as anxiety. So... would she count as my ponysona, if I portrayed her on Youtube or something like that? (like what Woodentoaster or The Living Tombstone for example).

Discuss! :)I'm really sorry if this is in the wrong section, mods. Wasn't sure where to put it.

I don't think so, I think any character you make will always share some similarities with you but I think we also put some wishes into sonas.
Like Lucky Lass could probably be called my ponysona, but I am not tall, don't have a really defined heritage, my hair isn't dark, my eyes aren't green.
But those are some of the things I really wish I had or was cx

None of mine are especially close to the core of me, they more pull on traits that I speculate I would have had if I'd made different choices as a kid. A ponysona is your own creation, which means you have infinite leeway in designing it. You can make it as much or as little like you as you want, and people have no right to call you out for whatever you choose because it's a character you designed yourself.

Now if you design it badly... They still don't have the right.

I have a very strict definition of the label. In my opinion, a ponysona is YOU as a pony or YOU adapted in some way to be as you would be in Equestria with as much accuracy as is possible to the setting. Anything else is just a regular character. Whilst you can use a character to represent yourself, it doesn't make them your ponysona.

My ponysona is me down to the most accurate letter. Her backstory, whilst not the same as mine due to the fact that I don't live in a fantasy world (this is the only thing I think leeway can be taken in), is similar to mine. She resembles me greatly, having glasses, a tan coat, wearing a flower in her mane, and wearing a necklace, as well as having a curly dark mane. I don't have a red streak in my hair as she does, but that was an adaption I made to make her more colorful for the setting.

Good responses you two! That makes total sense. I would like to have curly hair or big blue eyes, but I don't... so I incorporated them into Curly. But the biggest thing is that she doesn't have her cutie mark yet... which means she doesn't quite know where her destiny lies... just like me!

So in short, although she is a bit different from me, I still consider her to be my ponysona. :)

You already know we have similar definitions, Curly.  :D

Kay Dreamer is very much like me in personality and appearance. I have short brown hair, I love clothes and accessories, I am a musician, and her personality is basically my personality with a little more 'ponyish' enthusiasm to it.

However her backstory is very different. She's a Crystal Pony; she's dealing with being thrown forward in time by over one thousand years and not knowing what her place is in this New Equestria. She's dealing with the loss of her closest friends and family to Sombra's coup. She still has optimism, but she's somewhat lost. She had a place in the Old World. She's unsure what that place is anymore. I've tried to characterise this grief she carries within the context of how I would deal with it, but the fact remains that I've never had to.

She's a minstrel, which relates to my music, and in a small sense to my role as a teacher. (She tells stories and can educate through song.) So that part is similar. But as a Crystal Unicorn, she's born into aristocracy; I'm sure as heck not! Added to that, as a Royal Minstrel of the Crystal Empire, she has a lot of experience dealing with high society, and she is very well travelled. (Travelling, entertaining, and gathering news of the world to write into song is her job, after all.)

She's still my ponysona, because despite the difference in backstory, her personality is mine, and her role as a travelling minstrel is certainly one I imagine I would take if I were a pony.

No. My ponysona Star Ruby is somewhat like me. She likes video games, but she also sort has a love for adventure. I like adventure sometimes even I never have enough of them. She is somewhat overconfident, but I'm not. I guess we're alike but also different. But that's ok.

I don't care what pony you like because I like everypony!

Hmm. Yes and no.

My Ponysona, Monochrome, is like me in several senses. Timid and secluded, kind natured, but serious when the time calls for it. He likes old fashioned fedoras as I do, and writes music. Unlike me though, he could be essentially considered as adopted from birth, he's fought a war, he is a journalist, scientist, and an adventurer, he has black hair and blue eyes....so on.

Id say creative license can be taken. A Ponysona, after all, is a character. And as a character, he can be changed to suit the creators wishes. But I would be careful of making a Mary Sue or badly designed character.

There is no solid yes or no for me. My main 'sons, Pathfinder, is like me in a lot of ways. I tried to have him mirror my personality for the most part, but I don't stand by that on strict terms. As such, Pathfinder is much more willing than me to break down certain failings and follow his dreams.

But at the same time I have other OCs, and they represent other parts of my that Pathfinder doesn't. For example, Sojourner mirrors my love of history and adventure while Corsair shows off my appreciation for freedom and following your own path.

It's complicated, but simple.

Exactly the way I see my OC.  Its like an "image" of yourself, but in a different "world"....................*shivers* whooo.....that sounded a little weird,.   Yet, I agree.

OT: Sometimes, but I rather say yes.   My OC's backstory is not 100%, but more of 80%.  He is very outgoing, competitive, respectful, observant, etc.  Yet, one thing we both have in common...............................................we tend to do crazy things.  (ex. climb trees high, w/out a harness).  Most of all, his color scheme, are my signature colors I had since Halo CE and has been my favorite color mix since. (I should add TRON colors).

To me, a ponysona is you at the core. They look like how you want to look in the mlp universe. They have similiar personalities and talents that you do. BUT, because this is the mlp universe you can get creative with the backstory. You can have it be parallel to your own or something different that makes sense in the mlp universe.

In my opinion Oc's and Ponysonas are differentiated by their personality. An oc is their own personality while a ponysona is very similiar to your personality.

Great answers everyone! Thanks for making me feel a bit better. :) Aside from a few of you it looks like you agree with me - sweet! (although the people who think otherwise are totally cool too). ;)

I don't know. A lot of ponysonas that I've seen have completely different backstories from their creators (as seen above) so I can't help but feel that it's a bit hypocritical to say that your ponysona is exactly, 100% like you, but then give him/her a completely different backstory.

Yeah, it's MLP universe, but still, why wouldn't your own backstory work?

  • 6 months later...

I use as much of myself as possible in my OC, but some things need to be changed either to better adapt to the MLP universe or need to be left out for personal reasons (I do not want everyone to get my entire life story, even if it's adapted for a magical winged talking horse :okiedokielokie: ). I don't like to embellish things too much or make myself look better than I actually am. My main goal was to create a character that could relate to the rest of us on a level that few other OCs or even canon characters can by adapting my own personality and experiences to a level suitable for this fandom.

No

Your OC is a persona of your ownself that can be anything it can be

For example, you could be weak, but have an idea where your OC would be strong

It's all about the imagination and improvements of what makes an OC stand out, but it's also important to limit and tell when it has a weakness, making it more believable to most others

I've been lead to believe that a ponysona is like a alternate body. A different form for if you were in that world. But I've also been lead to believe this quote:

I guess I would say that I am similar to that. But my way is a bit different.

My pony self is me, the same me as in this world, how I put it, it is a different body for the me that is human right now, how I put it is if I were ever to be in the pony body I would ditch this human body and be in that body instead. My pony self is the same me that is in this reality, but just a different body. The thing is, if my "pony self" were to be a character that grew up in Equestria, then it would not be me, it could have a similar personality but it would not be ME, as me grew up on planet earth, not planet no-name in Equestria, so that is how I put it.

I don't like to separate my pony self from me as both me and my pony self would be me in different bodies. So There is no alternate Cinnamon somewhere else with that body, my pony self's body is me, and for me only. Kinda complicated to explain, but to have an ALTERNATE pony "me" would have a different design and different cutie mark, that is why my cutie mark is a power line, because it reflects who I am on this planet, not who I would be in Equestria or stuff like that. So that sums that up.

I'm a COLT/STALLION, not a filly/mare. Just because I have a round muzzle does not mean I'm female. Remember that. =3

I think you should do whatever the hay you want, so far as your ponysona is concerned.  If it comes from you that should be all that matters, IMO.  Anyone who tries to apply restrictions to your creativity and self-expression doesn't wholly understand or embrace either of those things.  The closest *I* have to a  ponysona (though I don't "officially" have one at all) is a green mare that's sweet on Rainbow Dash. xD  This would potentially serve to facilitate a vicarious mareXmare relationship with RD.

Not really as some people have a whole stable of pony OC's but usually one of them (usually the first one) will be the closest to them in terms of personality traits and usually serves as a sort of avatar for them on the forum(s) they visit. :)
