Would an episode without humor be a bad idea?

there's a rumor going around that season 5 will contain an episode that's completely serious, and without jokes. But would that be a bad idea? i'm not saying that a serious episode would be bad. but I guess I am saying that a COMPLETELY serious episode void of some sort of humor to cushion the blow doesn't seem like the way to go.

I would say that without a bit of humour, an episode would be a dull one for viewers. I wonder what this "serious episode" would be about...

All things need humour, even the serious things. A humourless episode would be completely miserable.

Well first of all I highly doubt there is any real evidence to S5 really at all, just speculations and rumors, it's possible I suppose, but there is no for sure on that.

As far as would a totally serious episode be a good idea? Idk, I feel like it would be hard to make an episode totally serious, maybe a bit more serious than usual, but totally 100% serious with 0 jokes? In what was originally made for little girls?

I just can't see it happening, and honestly Idk if i'd want it to, I'm ok with a more serious tone, but having all the characters just being incredibly serious from the start with absolutely 0 jokes(not even from Pinkie) I feel just would be odd.

But who knows, I guess I really wouldn't until I saw it, but MLP isn't really a drama, so I can't see it starting off all serious, usually mores serious episodes have some kind of build up to the more serious parts or something.

And as a childrens cartoon technically it's going to be more light hearted typically.

If it's well done however I have no quarrels, but I think absolutely 0 jokes is kind of stretching it.

I'm always a fan of trying something new.
It can turn out be be a great episode if they handle it the right way. But I can also lead to an epic fail.

It's tricky, but I sure would love to see such an experiment :)

Season 4 had many episodes where the writers were sticking jokes in on moments that should have been treated seriously. But for them to quit comedy cold turkey for a week does seem like a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to that criticism.

One of the best things about MLP's better episodes is that they know where to balance seriousness and humor when tackling everyday issues or adventure. Unless they were dealing with a really heavy plot point that would require them to silence their humor, then the prospect of this comes off as a bit jarring.

However, MLP has always been experimental in its nature, trying new elements in its technical presentation and its story style and I definitely wouldn't be against it. I have my reservations but I also have faith in the writing staff to pull this off.

If there's going to be a serious episode, it's gotta be about Applejack's parents. We never see them, they're never mentioned. You know something's happened to them, something grim. It's just another one of those unexplained things.

It's similar to Chuckie's mother in Rugrats and Andy's father in Toy Story, albeit the former situation was explained. There's tons of theories about Andy's father, the most popular one is that he walked out on his family. That's the theory I believe.

I hope they'll cover Applejack's parents in this episode, if there ever is one. Gonna have alot of emotion in it.

It's either what I described above, or Pinkie Pie dies...

Or nothing, it's your pick.

If it's dealing with a very heavy issue, humour would only distract.  Some of the greatest films, songs, and even episodes of shows have no humour at all, and yet remain in people's heads for good reasons.  Has anyone here ever seen Avatar: The Last Airbender?  It can be very funny when it needs to, but it can also be very sombre.  A voice actor died, and they made this to honour him:

It really depends, it's better for the writers to stick humor where it's necessary, and if the episode doesn't warrant humor, then it's better to leave it out

There will be a season 5.

Anyways, I really really doubt that this would happen, but I really want it to happen. 0 jokes sounds a bit meh but what I mean is a more "serious" episode. Haha I'm interested already, I want to see what they can do with it.

i never really watched MLP for the humor,so i wouldnt mind an episode that is completely serious.

however, the humor of MLP has been a part, but just a PART of what made the episodes good.

i dont think there will ever be an episode without humor, since it wouldnt really appeal to the target demographic.

but i would like an episode with a more serious tone to it.

maybe teach kids about bullying, but this time for real, not the babs seed "she only is a bully because she got bullied herself" crap.

It wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea, as long as they do good on like everything else to avoid the episode coming off as boring. Like, have a good story or some emotional scenes or good action scenes. Hey, I've seen anime and action cartoons do it.

Yeah I know, I worded that badly, I meant to say there is no evidence really as to what season 5 will actually contain, it's going to be mostly just speculation(Or atleast i'm not aware of any official word on Season 5.)

As far as I know, no one has said anything about what will happen. Though I guess it's just a matter of time before more rumors starts to float around.

I'll check up on EqD every once in a while

Yeah, well rumors always float around ;p, but most of them are just that.

I haven't looked at EqD in a heck of a long time, maybe I need to do so...

Just like many things, it all comes down to execution of an idea or story element that can make or break an episode, whether its true potential was achieved or wasted.  Throughout of the series of the show, there have been at least a handful of episodes that had a lot going for them and held potential to be s stellar experience, but ultimately feel flat for some fans for one reason or another (I'll leave each to their own devices on that one).

Though a humorless episode at face value seems like an about face for what the show is all about, I do feel that such an idea can be transitioned well into an episode so long as all the elements are put into their proper place.  There can be humorous times in a darker story to create some contrast and break up a solitary mood or atmosphere, so why can't the opposite be true for this scenario?  If such an episode does see the light of day at some point, it is at least a good sign toward the staff that they are willing to experiment, try new angles and ideas and bring viewers a new and refreshing experience.  Even if it does fail, no one can fault them for trying.

I guess it sort of depends on how they handle it. I think that having an episode completely without humor would be jarring, given the general nature of the show. That said, we don't know what it's about yet and depending on how serious it is, humor could work against the overall thing they are trying to achieve with it.

Realistically, I doubt they would do an episode without humor. In this day and age, I don't think they would get away with it. I think parents would complain. But I guess we'll have to wait and see. They got away with the Tirek fight, after all. Whose to say they can't get away with a completely serious episode.

Humorless? Sort of how I would write MLP. I would try to include some but I am not a big fan of humor really. I could make it work though and I have faith that Mr. Larsen or whoever writes such an episode can do it well. Perhaps it will be a unique episode among the fifth season. Applejack's parents would be perfect for such an episode.
