gaming How do you game in Fallout 3/NV?

I am going back to Fallout 3 after not playing it since 2009. I played New Vegas when it was new and I never beat the game at all. I have beaten Fallout 3, but never 100% the game. I am playing the GOTY on PC since I am tired of buying new disc. No joke, me and my brother played this so much on the 360, that our base game from 2008 was destroyed and we went through 3 GOTY disc. So that's 4 Fallout 3s I have owned.

I want to learn nexus mod now. It's a shame steam has no achievement system like New Vegas, so I am stuck with Windows Live.

I am playing the game more like a tactical strategy game. Meaning my 3 main skills are medicine, science and speech( speech is always what I level on priority). I'm not even on level 10 yet and I already have taken advantage of comprehension and all those perks that enhance the leveling system early on. Perks like bloody mess and animal friend kind of make the game too easy for my taste. Bloody mess is just a wasted level up.

I bought the GOTY edition during the last Steam sales (by the way, Steam does have achievements for New Vegas), and I also have a New Vegas copy borrowed from a friend. In total, I must have about 60 hours of play time if you combine the two, but I still haven't completed any (Early-game in 3, Late-game in New Vegas).

I usually level up Lockpicking, Science and Speech/Sneak, since I usually either avoid combat or fight it from afar.

I also try to keep a good Karma (except for stealing stuff, since the system is slightly flawed at this level) and ally with "nice" factions (it's interesting to see how much everyone is gray though, all factions and characters have their bright and dark side).

For me it depends on how I'm feeling when I make the character. First, I usually just toss something together and beat the game. Then I pick a specific "class" I want to play around with. I usually make a few of those. Then I go for 100% everything in one run. That style depends on the game. In fallout sneak and a rifle make for a massive combat advantage. Computers and locks and speech are usually next.

I don't much care for bloody mess, I like having bodies for storage and easy looting :P

I usually do it in a RP sorta way.

Some I have done include,

An evil run full of melee and unarmed.

A good run full of sniping and a pistoling.

A plasma and laser run with a very smart female(that was fun).

A sneaky drunk gambler who headed straight through the deathclaws and into New Vegas to get rich.

Ive really only played New Vegas so nothing for Fallout 3.

In both games, pretty much just give me a gauss rifle/ Tesla cannon and everything dies before they even know what hit them. Except those Point Lookout swampmen. Those guys are terrible.  >_>

I tend to get my karma up as high as I can and avoid combat whenever possible when dealing with named NPCs. Everything else, I only avoid combat if I know I can't handle it. Fire weapons (Flamer, Incinerator, Shishkebab) are my go-to weapons if I can't pick it off from a distance.

I generally tag my Speech, Science, and (Small) Guns skills. From there, I pretty much just add points as I see fit, but that more often than not involves maxing out Energy Weapons. Gotta love the pew pews.

Well just last night I gave Tenpenny Tower over to Roy Phillips and his ghouls. I honestly find that side quest hard because without giving anything away( it's 2014, why am I worried about spoiling a game from 08?) That side quest is a lose-lose for everyone in my eyes. Both Tenpenny, Gustavo and Phillips are miserable and terrible people. But I got the ghoul mask last night which will make me breeze through metro tunnels faster. I think Tenpenny Tower is awful... Megaton is so much more useful.

Can someone please explain what makes New Vegas better than 3?

Haven't been to Tenpenny yet, I'm still just out of Megaton.

About New Vegas... I wouldn't really call it better.

The story is a bit less interesting in my opinion (but the storytelling by environment is still awesome), and I feel like they've given more space to the FPS element than the RPG part of the game (Aiming down sights, gun customization...). But I still enjoy both.

By the way, I think the Operation Anchorage add-on would have been more fitting for New Vegas than 3. I mean, it makes sense for a wasteland-weathered Courier to go after loot in a pre-war simulation, but not really for a fresh-out-of-the-Vault 19 years old looking for his/her father...

Reminds me, I also bought Fallout Tactics during that sale... I should check it out someday.

When I play New Vegas (haven't played 3 yet,) here's how I play/played:

  • On my first playthrough, I played as a lawful guy trying to bring order to the wasteland, who faced enemies head-on with all kinds of weapons. He never tried to get into trouble with towns and tried to help people, therefore having good Karma. He joined Caesar's Legion because they could bring stability to the Mojave.
  • On my second playthrough (one I'm currently on), I'm playing the Courier as if he thought exactly like me and he's making choices that I would agree with, talking how I want, using what weapons I think are best, etc. How he faces his enemies is he sneaks up on them and shoots them, until he gets found and then he uses different kinds of weapons to fight them head-on. He's also more mercenary-like, doing some things because of the caps. He's also adventuring out more and trying to find more places and stuff.

I play Fallout like Skyrim: get the bes stuff and rek everything.

Fallout 3: Tesla armor, full condition Plasma rifle, rek everthing.

Fallout NV: Power armor, Gauss Rifle max condition, Rek eveything.

BAM! Game beaten.

In Fallout 3 I just run around with some Tesla Armor, and a laser rifle shooting all of the mutants in sight.

In Fallout: New Vegas I usually just run around with Boone, and the King's dog and kill things. I primarily use a Hunting Rifle, and a Shotgun.

In both games, I usually play good karma guy (except for stealing stuff) and usually focus on Intelligence, Strength, Lockpick, Speech and Science.

In Fallout 3, usually run around with A3-21's Plasma Rifle and BoS Power Armour, with Dogmeat and Fawkes as companions.

In Fallout: New Vegas, I like to wear the NCR Ranger armour because I like the look of the trench coat and run around with Dinner Bell or Ratslayer. I only take out high-powered weapons if I'm facing deathclaws. I go with NCR because that, to me, appears to be the good ending. And in terms of companions I usually run around with Boone and Rex.

I don't think Fallout:New Vegas is strictly better than Fallout 3. I think some aspects of Fallout 3 are better than Fallout New Vegas and vice versa. Fallout 3's setting and story are better. But New Vegas does weapons and skills better. In my opinion of course.

I'm a loner who almost exclusively uses handguns (not a fan of energy weapons, btw) and scavenges for everything. Since I seldom have to buy anything, I'm not too concerned with making money or selling off what stuff I find. I take what I can use and leave the rest behind.

I once ran around naked and beat people with a baseball bat screaming 'BETTER THAN CUBS'

That was the best playthrough ive ever done. I usually RP it or try and do interesting new ways. I walked everywhere once. It was the longest but i found a bunch of new stuff.

I only love you platonically.

Basically what I do is my own type of gaming on free world games. Its called FTC. Which stands for fuck the campaign. I don't really like doing the missions. Also I stay away from those giant wasps and fly things. They scare the hell out of me. Also the highway a miles away from NV. Stay away from that. Those damn death claws are there.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was a weapon hoarder (I collected every unique weapon in Fallout 3 GOTY and Fallout NV Ultimate edition urrgghh I had no life back then  ) I was a science, lockpick and melee run who had high speech so I would be able to access more unique weapon through dialogue (if I couldn't get the weapon off the person through speech then I always carried a fire axe) Oh did anyone else get the Knock Knock unique fire axe because that was my favourite weapon.

I'm a little late to the party here but the first time I played 3 & New Vegas I played Good Karma, mainly used rifle grip weapons on both (Aside from a glorious weapon I found from a mod for NV which was scoped) And the armour with the most useful benefits, So the winterized T-51b from Anchorage and the NCR trench coat from lonesome road. I've recently restarted 3 though and I'm trying a neutral character more focused on stealth and close combat... And doing badly

Except those Point Lookout swampmen. Those guys are terrible.  >_>

Ugh. I went to Point Lookout when I was level 10. Worst decision in a game I've ever made

Played New Vegas, looking to get DLC :) . So I've decided to redo play through. So my first I in general played good karma. Did a bit RP as an NCR Trooper. Arranged my hot key inventory with different weapon base.

Pad 1: Melee

Pad 2: One handed pistol/SMG

Pad 3: SMG or Rifle grip

Pad 4: Laser RCW (cause it be appealing)

Pad 5: Scatter gun

Pad 6: Long range rifle

Pad 7: Explosive.

One man arsenal, taking over Mojave. One bloody mess at a time ;) .

Do stick around Darling, I could use the company~

Max out sneak and explosives, i pick the perks for maximum explosive damage. Perks for chem benefits.

I then lay out huge minefields around and have enemies blow the shit out of themselves. When i face a particularly strong adversary, i equip a maxed out fatman and fire a sneaky globe of death at them - the insane amount of damage is usually enough to take care of everything.

Littlepip style. Literally. I just get them mods and walk the wasteland with Little Macintosh and Zebra Carbine. And I usually take Mint-Als (Mentats)..A lot of them. Don't know if the Overmare studios actually release their game, so I can stop playing FO3 that way

Neutral character just for Impartial Meditation. I normally use two-handed shotguns and handguns, and use light armor over power armor. I mainly invested in Speech, Small Guns, Sneak, Lockpick, and Science, but mostly Speech, Small Guns, and Sneak. I normally put my SPECIAL points into Agility and Charisma. Due to the fact that I steal things and donate every now and then, my karma always balances out.

No matter what, in FO3, I always take Impratial Meditation (+30 to Speech if you have Neutral karma), Black Widow (If playing as a female, kickass speech choices and 10%+ to guys), Comprehension (The best perk in the game), Sniper (+25% in VATS for when you try to shoot them in the head), and Mysterious Stranger (Sometimes a mysterious stranger will help you out in VATS, it's a fun perk). Technically, when I get to it, I tend to take Grim Reaper's Sprint (When you exit VATS, all of your action points regain) too.

ALSO TUNNEL SNAKES RULE

Of the times I've played Fallout 3 and NV.I've always played as a McGyver/Jack of all trades type character. Though I'd tend to put more points into energy weapons, repair and speech, because I love energy weapons. in FO3, I also do Operation Anchorage as early as possible, always.that way I can have Power armour for the rest of the game.Ialso put a lot of work into repair...and i take that one perk that lets me use practically any weapon to fix any similar weapon....best perk ever for repair.

New Vegas, I tend to do the Courier's mile add-on First as it gives me ED-E Upgrades as well as Ranger Armour. Not to mention some badass weaponry.

Yep.Energy weapons are my thing.Though I also love having a sniper rifle/anti-Materiel rifle. Something about taking targets out in one shot at a long range is just....satisfying.
