If you are really that reliant on other people's opinions of you that your life depends on it, then you may as well become a hermit because not everyone is going to agree with you on everything you have an opinion on. And just because you're in an environment with other people doesn't mean that you have to let their opinions get to you. So what if someone thinks what you like is "wrong" or "immoral". Morality is not black and white, and has different meanings to different people.

And then you are denied that job because of what someone else thinks of you.

Or that group of potential friends finds you disgusting because of what someone else has told them about you.

Like it or not, what people think of you does matter. It doesn't have to affect your own world views but you can't just say "fuck what everyone else thinks" and assume there will be no consequences whatsoever.

If you are denied a job because of what someone else thinks of you, as long as what you do is legal, I can almost guarantee you that you can sue for that. Some lawyer somewhere will be able to pull it off.

And if there are potential "friends" that find you abhorrent because of one trait (and of course, that trait is legal, mind, like in the example provided of being a brony or a furry), then they aren't very good friends in the first place, now are they?

And sure there will be consequences, but they aren't as life-changing as everyone is making them out to be. Everyone seems to be assuming I'm thinking "Oh if you are addicting to raping and murdering babies then fuck whatever other people think, I enjoy it, it's fine." No. As long as it doesn't harm anyone else, there is literally no reason to care what other people think about it.

It's not about people agreeing or disagreeing, it is about trying to maintain a decent amount of amiable relationships with the people in your environment.

I wouldn't go around parading myself as a brony in the deep South.

Said person could be a customer, family, landlord, etc.

There is if you have the slightest interest in propping up a business, running for office, basically any job that will make you depend on people.

The deep south is full of idiots, you just ignore what they say because they're all backwater hicks who fuck their cousins. Do I expect them to care about what a random voice on the internet says? No, because they likely have grown a spinal column from hearing people say it all the time.

And?

Not if you're good at what you do, and if you are getting in to a career, why would you do something you suck at? http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BunnyEarsLawyer

Have fun living in a town where everyone is subtly seething with hatred against you.

And?

 There are things such as boycotts.

Not if you're good at what you do, and if you are getting in to a career, why would you do something you suck at?

Because people never destroy someone's career because of irrelevant frivolities irrespective to merit, amirite?

Then move. Or just ignore people.

Don't own a business, they tend to be a pain in the ass to run, and for most people, it's not going to matter what you do at home. What you do is be fine with who you are, just don't rub it in people's faces, regardless of what you're doing.

If you're good enough, that still won't matter. And if someone is trying to tear you down that fiercely, either get out of politics or file a police report because someone's been fucking stalking you.

They can very well be as life changing as they seem.

The problem with the employer is that you can't even know why they denied you that job. It can be as simple and petty as you being a brony and all the stigma that comes with the name. But they don't have to voice that opinion for it to be true. That's why it's so tricky.

And if people don't wanna be friends because of one aspect of you but that's the single most prominent part of your personality you're gonna feel like shit if you really wanted to be friends with those people.

You can be denied anything for any reason and legal entities can do literally nothing about it if those reasons are never made known or if they are it's done far too late for anything to be done about it.

People's opinions matter, especially when they have control over something important in your life.

Because that always fixes things, right? Ignoring your problems.

Real life is not (unfortunately) a meritocracy. If you say the wrong things to the wrong people, you will get taken down, regardless of wether you deserve it or not.

And if someone is trying to tear you down that fiercely, either get out of politics or file a police report because someone's been fucking stalking you.

Tell that to Mel Gibson.

The term Brony has become, at least to some, as much an identifier with the fandom as it is a descriptor of a fan of FiM, and I know there are fans of the show that do not consider themselves Bronies because they don't want to be part of the fandom.

It seems that I will always disagree with your opinion (and that's okay). Someone who is a fan of MLP:FIM, regardless of their involvement in the fandom, regardless of whether they have any MLP:FIM items, regardless of whether they want to be associated with the Brony fandom, etc., will always be a Brony to me.

What about "anti-bronies"?

Well, this be the thread to compare and contrast the fandoms. The other is specific to an event at the con.

I'm sorry, but fandoms have no place in work. I can understand suing because you being a brony came up at work and your boss fired you, but if you come to work with MLP ties or even worse, original.jpgthen it would probably be a good idea to fire you and quite honestly if I was presented the resume in the postion to hire or ignore this person I would lose no sleep over doing the latter.

If you made the massive poor decision to format your resume like that, then you aren't going to get hired, that's just common sense, but wearing a tie that has ponies on it, but small ones like http://www.mylittleties.com/product/tielight-sparkle <-- these that are small enough that you have to actually look closely, then that's fine.

The way I've always understood furry's as being is those who like anthropomorphic animals, not just a show about animals(ponies in this case) given a more human-like personality. I wouldn't say they're closely related enough to automatically categorize bronies into the same thing as furries, that's simply being to general. Infact, even in a generalization I don't know if it would really be correct, as being a brony isn't quite directly correlated enough to furries to be considered in the same generalization.

That said, of course bronies can be furries, but it isn't a given, I don't personally consider myself a furry, but I do consider myself a brony.

There is also the issue however of the fact that both terms aren't exactly dictionary defined or anything. Even just concerning the term "Brony" many are split on what constitutes as a brony exactly. And the same I'm sure is true with the furries.

So I guess it depends to an extent, however I lean towards no in my personal opinion, but there could easily be variance on the answer really depending on the individual and his view of it.

That's barely noticeable, but I've seen ties with literally ponies on them.

:okiedokielokie: We can't be a sub-genre of a furry because...

1.  Sub-genre of a furry sounds stupid.

2. Furries believe in being anthro animals but I don't have to believe in being one to be a brony.

3. Sub-genre means it has roots within the main genre so there for, we all can't be furries.

4. Who wants to be called a sub-genre of something less exciting? :) Seriously can't find anything else apart from fur suiting and art over on the furry end. Is that all there is to it?

To be honest, furries are okay, I have nothing against them but combining the two fandoms to count as one doesn't work out if I don't want to be labeled a furry.

Both fandoms may have a interest in anthropomorphic animals, but just because Star Wars falls under the same genre as Star Trek doesn't mean Star Wars fans are Trekkies. It all boils down to self-identification, really, which titles alone already makes it damn near impossible for the two to become a single social aggregate. There are plenty of people who identify themselves as one or the other, sometimes both! However, at the end of the day, the reasoning behind such would be because the two truly do have different traits and that's how most people see it.

Other than that, the furries never made a move against Big Brothers (fans of previous generation MLP) or the franchise they represent, why they have some hell-bent determined interest in claiming the brony community as part of them truly escapes me. :/
