What If One Of The Mane Six...Died?

If Apple Jack died, I wouldn't even care. Is Apple Jack even in the mane6? She's more like a background pony.

Hell, Derpy Hooves is more mane6 than Apple Jack

If a mane 6 member died, it would be tragic, for the mane 6, for the fanbase, for hasbro, it would be bad all around.

Not to mention it should be noted that there are children who watch the show, and they would be devastated if one of the characters died I'd probably be more devastated though

Hasbro would have an angry fanbase, and probably angry parents to deal with, plus their viewers would go down for sure.

MLP is to character driven to just kill off a character, the characters are so incredibly relatable they feel practically human, having one of them die would be like watching someone die, a real person.

Why do you think people get so defensive and involved in their favorite ponies?

Because they are so relatable, and have such realistic personalities.

Any pony getting killed off would be both to violent, would destroy part of the show due to their necessity to the show, and cause great sadness especially for their fans.

Even if you don't like a certain mane 6 member or something, it cannot be denied that the mane 6 are dependent on each other for parts of their characters and personalities and other things. (For instance, Applejack and Rarity's conflicting personalities causing that interesting dynamic between them.)

The show would just not be the same if one of the mane 6 was killed off, doesn't matter which one, they all have something special and lovable about them. And it would not only harm the show, but hurt people emotionally as well.

But I highly highly highly highly doubt Hasbro is anywhere stupid enough to do such a thing, there are simply to many reasons why they shouldn't, and no real good reasons for it. So it mostlikely won't happen thankfully.

While I think this mentality that people, especially children, can't handle the concept of death is stupid and has to go, I feel that Friendship is Magic might not necessarily benefit from it. Not every program would. If was somehow shoehorned in for no reason, I would dislike it.

Well then, that would be the point where the show would jump the shark. MLP is supposed to be a light-hearted show, why are there all these calls to make the show grimdark? It wouldn't work.

I can't choose ; n ; Everypone has a good role in the series (even if I could use a little less Pinkie and Fluttershy) What I'd think would be a better story would be Fluttershy, because it's more tragic. She is also the element of kindness, so it hits the feels extra hard. I just can't bring myself to pick Rarity or Twilight :S

EDIT: Though the show has dark themes, it is completely nuts to consider them doing this to the mane six at least. At worst I'd imagine Granny Smith reaching a peaceful end.

I can imagine myself in a state of disbelief, unable to comprehend what I had just watched.

For some reason, when imagining this hypothetically, Fluttershy was the imagined victim... :(

If Applejack died I literally wouldn't be surprised or care at all.

(Sorry Applejack fans)

As for the other Mane6, it would be pretty sad, but I'd be interested in what they did from there.

This won't happen though because that'd just kill off the franchise.

I doubt any if the mane six would die since it's still a show tailored for a young audience after all.

But if Rarity dies, I'll make diamonds from her ashes...a shining light, to our dear unicorn Rarity, even in death.

List of causes if one of the main six died

Twilight: Celestia will cry

Applejack: No more picking apples

Pinkie pie: Ponies in ponyville will fight

Fluttershy: Theres no one to look after the animals

Rarity: No more clothes? I guess

Rainbow Dash: No pony to look after the clouds

Actually theres plenty of pegasi to replace Rainbowdash if she were to die,

I don't really have an argument against that, I guess Ponyville's local tailor is dead(?)

Why can't animals look after themselves....

I don't think they'd fight, thats not how Pinkie would want them to mourn her..

The rest of the apple family can pick the apples, business would be slower though,

Celestia, being an immortal goddess of the sun, probably has lost many loved and treasured students before (speculating) and while yes she may cry it might not be that big of an impact.

Heheh, Rainbow Dash killed off by Cupcakes.

Welp, they wouldn't do that, but it would certainly mean the other ponies would be depressed for several episodes.. Unless they quickly forgot about it .

It would likely be the biggest change in the show....it would feel pretty empty....

most bronies would not take this so well...change...and the biggest yet....yeah

I would not rage...but myself I would have a hard time getting used to this

If death did happen in fim it would pretty much change it all.

Many people would be leaving the fandom

It would lead to upset children, it would scare many younger viewers or even older

Kids shows do occasionally kill off characters. The Lion King was mentioned above. The Princess and the Frog is another example.

I think they could quite easily kill off Luna, Celestia, or other supporting characters, but to avoid alienating a significant portion of the fanbase, the death would have to be meaningful and help progress the other characters. More minor characters could be killed off just as easily as The Simpsons killed of Maud Flanders - think Granny Smith.

Killing off one of the mane six is a trickier proposition. If they did that they'd unavoidably lose fans. However, making such a brave change and doing it well could also help cement other fans. Swings and roundabouts.

They could kill off Rarity as part of a multi-episode plot which involved her sacrifice being meaningful and somehow helping save her friends, and/or Equestria. Of course for the FIM formula to keep working, they'd need to find another character to fill her hooves. The obvious choice would be Sweetie Belle. Her gaining her cutie mark and taking Rarity's place in the group could form part of the plot line. As much as I am fond of Rarity, part of me would really like to see a plot like that.

The same plot line could alternatively work for Applejack and Applebloom.

Alright, I'm already seeing comparisons so I might as well say my piece on it. My Little Pony Friendship is Magic never had that dark tone to it, Lion King had a dark tone throughout the entire film, TMNT '03 and '12 were dark right out of the gate and  Superhero shows like The Spectacular Spider-Man, Teen Titans, Young Justice and The Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes always had serious storylines where there was always the potential that characters will die (even if Teen Titans had that goofy humor).

These shows have serious storylines where characters are risking their necks in nearly every episode. My Little Pony Friendship is Magic isn't even like that as the show focuses on the everyday issues of their lives like family reunions, fashion shows, getting ready for a big gala, their relatives coming to visit, they aren't risking their lives every day. The closest the show ever gets to being dark is during season openings and finales and even then most of them have a light-hearted tone to it the whole way through. If you just all of sudden decide to change the tone of an entire show to make it darker and more dramatic than other seasons a lot of people are going to feel alienated.

I wish I'd responded sooner, but threads talking about killing off specific characters rarely end well. Whether intentionally or not, they fans of the character being discussed tend to get really riled up, with unnecessary drama as the result. Because of what's already happened here and in similar threads in the past, this thread has been closed.

For some more neutral discussion, here's a thread for talking about how we might react if a nonspecific main character died, and here's one for sharing whose death would hit you the hardest.
