Tetrakemy 221 November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 Has any background ponies or future plans for the show ever consider any homeless? Like a pony sleeping outside somewhere obviously homeless like? Is it possible for ponies to have no home?
ManaMinori 4,145 November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 (edited) well.....in G1, there's a hobo character called Woe-be-Gone (and the ponies call him a hobo, too) whose bad luck seems to follow him everywhere, and accidents happen whenever he's around (a lot like Derpy) and when he knocks down the nursery, the ponies complain about having to possibly sleep outside.... does that count? Wind Chaser 4,768 November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 I think it could be a potentially good idea, as the ponies we see are mostly very privileged, we should get a sense of how the other side lives. What would be even better is to make this pony a blank flank. But I doubt Hasbro would allow it given their relatively sterilized vision of where they want this franchise to go. Not that I know of, however I wonder if discord counts I mean does he even have a home? He's Discord. He probably lives in interdimensional space. Most likely the Q Continuum. But we're not supposed to think too hard about these things. Because Discord.

Jeric 46,861 November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 Several of the featured characters are transient in nature. Trixie is probably the most popular of them. Her home is a small enclosed wagon as she goes town to town performing as the old wandering minstrels used to do in Medieval Europe. After the events in Boast Busters things were obviously rough on her. Some assume that with the Ursa Minor destroying her home ... she was in fact homeless. Will MLP address homelessness? Not in the form that you get in the real world, i doubt it. You have seen hints of the prospect of losing your home and the emotional impact a few times (Applejack and Twilight). That may be the closest where it's not played for comedic effect.
AlbaTross 1,586 November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 (edited) I could see maybe having a homeless background pony appear at some point. Maybe one of the characters could give bits to him/her, or maybe Rarity could give up her scarf or something, but I doubt there will ever be a homeless pony who gets more than a few seconds of screen time. I doubt homelessness is as huge an issue in Ponyville, since homes are communal and rent is paid in kind and in labour while bits and gems are used to pay for other things, though I'm not 100% sure how they're acquired with a few exceptions(such as Rarity selling clothes, the Apples selling cider and the Cakes selling their baked goods). Still, the economic system in Ponyville, and possibly all of Equestria, seems to at least provide homes for everyone. Shanks 10,816 November 8, 2014 Share November 8, 2014 I could see it being possible, however it is probably much more common in major urban areas like Mahehattan than Ponyville. Rarity Get's Cockroaches

Tao 8,034 November 8, 2014 Share November 8, 2014 I wonder if well, every pony has to have a house to sleep in? I mean it did show ponies sleeping out side in the first EP living and sleeping outside like normal ponies would!
Lucky Star 972 November 8, 2014 Share November 8, 2014 I would imagine that being homeless in Equestria would be a lot easier than being homeless. it would be easier to travel and find work. I mean, becoming homeless there in my mind seems like a good excuse to go on vacation and try the hobo life. ponies are so kind and trusting, I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to just start a new life in a small town. as for homeless ponies in the show, doesn't Cheese sandwich travel about with no home? and Trixie as well. but they don't count because they do that stuff willingly, a homeless person is technically someone who was unlucky and ended up on the street's, not because of their line of work. so I can't really think of any. *OC Lucky Star*

True, even in a society where there is a scarcity of labor there will still be homelessness. In my minds eye I think that situational homeless would likely exist, and perhaps be more apparent in the large cities as well.
Soldier Surplus 232 November 8, 2014 Share November 8, 2014 Well it's not impossible. just like real life, you can have no money or job, or a home. So yea it's actually very possible. RainbowMau 291 November 8, 2014 Share November 8, 2014 (edited) According to the mobile game Derpy is homeless, since you never have to build her a house, she's frequently wandering through Ponyville without ever having a house. Arctic Night 884 November 9, 2014 Share November 9, 2014 I'm not sure we have enough data from the show to find an actual answer to your question, but I would love to hear Celestia's economic policies. HereComesTom 2,268 November 9, 2014 Share November 9, 2014 Dang, that's pretty depressing for MLP. He got better by the end of the episode---the caster who enchanted him did so because of his speech about his luck when they first met. I don't expect homelessness to be a big issue in MLP, either, TBH. They probably won't take the worldbuilding in that direction. Help the main six stop the Weather Factory Meltdown! Roughshod 719 November 9, 2014 Share November 9, 2014 That caster sounds like a jerk. We're they wearing an alicorn amulet? Deep social issues don't seem to be a major focus these days. Which is sad considering how much effort this show has made to counter stereotypes and stigmas in the past. The truth is always rough.

sweetolebob18 728 November 9, 2014 Share November 9, 2014 My computer doesn't seem to want to let me copy, but in post #2 Nightmare Muffin mentions that in G1 there was a wandering pony who brought bad luck. As a dinosaur, I remember Al Capp had a cartoon strip called Lil' Abner. He had a character named Joe (something foreign I can't recall) that was the same. I always thought the G1 episode was a homage to him. Al Capp's biggest claim to fame was he invented "Slobovians" as a way to tell ethnic jokes without anyone being able to take offense. (Some folks managed to do so anyway). He also had "Sadie Hawkins Day" dances. I think he invented that as well, but I am too shiftless to look it up. He also had "Jubilation T Cornpone", a southern general who "Did more to win the war for the Union than any other man." (Or so Capp has Lincoln saying) There was a song about it in the Lil Abner movie But, I digress. There do seem to be some ponies who voluntarily wander around. But, there don't seem to be any homeless or orphaned ponies. I'm sure there must be some, just as there are some w drug or alcohol problems, crippled (if only in flight accidents), etc. Twilight came close at the end of season 4, but got her new castle. I saw the postings, there is going to be an episode in season 5 dealing with this. In a TVY cartoon, I doubt Hasbro will show them.

Roughshod 719 November 12, 2014 Share November 12, 2014 Let's say there was a pony who's special talent was being homeless or simply wandering around like a vagabond. They might have a cutie mark that resembles a bindle(hobo stick with cloth attached) and their name might be something like Dusty Trail or Wanderlust. Would the fact that this pony is homeless be considered negative if it was their talent and destiny? 1 The truth is always rough.
