Does Spike Get Paid?

I don't think so. Twilight is likely Spike's legal guardian so she looks after him, feeds him and makes sure he has a roof over his head. He does chores yes, but so do most kids around his general age. The closest thing would getting a weekly/monthly allowance.

I wouldn't think so. I mean, if you want a comparison, think of him as an assistant, unpaid intern, or a goold old fashioned volunteer. I mean, as we saw with the episode with the teenage dragons, Spike is probably free to leave whenever he wants to.

On the opposite end, slavery is what Sombra did to the crystal ponies. I think there's a fine line between Spike's work and true slavery.

Twilight is Spike's guardian in a sense, and we have seen such motherly behavior from her several times in the show to indicate that. Also, just like the CMC it appears the young of Equestria have more personal freedom than what we would consider in a suburban setting in our world. Therefore there are episodes that have him alone. A lot of trust and responsibility are afforded to children in Pony society. Spike was raise in Pony culture, he follows it.

Also, are parents that do not give their children an allowance slave masters? No.

I wouldn't doubt that he get's some sort of allowance for helping about in the library.

I mean he's been shown to buy comics in the past, though he's also been shown to trade them.

so he might being doing that because he's can't buy all he wants.

I often see things like this either trying to depict Spike as a sentient being being treated as a pet, or a happy slave, and some bronies seem to think that he has no freedom or right's among ponies.

I doubt it though, it could be halfway true, but can you really see any pony being okay with that sort of thing?

I'm sure spike at least get's an allowance.

and I'm sure he has rights.

No, he's an inferior slave to the glourious and incorruptible Pony Master Race.

He gets room and board out of this, and some gems at times, but he's roughly equivalent to an intern, indentured servant, or apprentice. Unfortunately, due to lapses in writing with this character, we know little to nothing about how this would help his future.

Yes, I think he does-and I'm not talking about food and shelter.

He gets paid in gems, since it's been showed that he can eat other things, but gems are of greater value to him as shown in 'Just for Sidekicks' where he gets paid in gems to watch everyone's pets.

So where does he get the fire ruby from in 'Secret of My Excess' if he's with Twilight most of the time doing chores and running errands?

At least, that's the conclusion I came to after seeing both of those episodes.

As said before, Twilight is Spike's legal guardian pretty much.

He gets all of his needs filled both physiological and and social needs as well as a proper and probably better education than what he would have received otherwise. I mean he may work really hard, but he gets plenty of benefits from it including chances to find gems which is what he would want if he were to receive materialistic payment.

He really just doesn't need any form of payment due to what he gets in return.

Spike does his chores and in return, Twilight provides him with food, shelter and motherly/sisterly love.

Rarity would likely give him a commission whenever they go gem hunting. She is the Element of Generosity after all.

He gets payed in the form of family love. :3

Also, what Everypony else said above. He lives with Twilight who apparently provides what he needs, so as many have said, it is more of a mother/son bond, not an employer/employee bond.

Well he's just a baby dragon right? Is he even old enough to be employed? I doubt it. And he's pretty much both Twilight's pet and best friend so she supports and provides for him.

Maybe by Twilight or pony standards. But for a baby dragon, Spike is incredibly articulate, well-educated and entrusted to perform often important tasks for Celestia herself.

Calling Spike a baby may just speak towards his age rather than his actual maturity. For all we know, "baby" dragons in nature already learn to fly and fend for themselves. Living a more sheltered and peaceful life may have stunted his growth.

But back on the main topic, age is hardly a justification for Spike not getting paid or compensated. I don't think Twilight should be viewed as someone who exploits child labor anyways.  :o

Hes like the little brother..... He does many chores, but not only seems happy with the arrangement, gets to have a place to sleep, food, and from what i can tell a very positive home life.

He gets a warm safe place to call home and a sister figure that watches over him, isn't that enough? Oh and gems. Lots and lots of gems.

Considering the amount of work Spike does as Twilight's assistant, well over and above simple household chores, he certainly should be paid, but I suspect he gets something more akin to an allowance than a salary.

No he doesn't, all he get's is barely enough gems to eat (how many times have we seen him eat gems in the series), he get's a tiny bed and Twilight is the only one who benefits from his work. All oppressed dragons rise up take control of the houses, create a system for working dragons, dragons of the world unite! Dragon communism aside I think he has a decent deal going with Twilight.

No matter how hard I try these ponies will simply never leave me.

a better comparison is being a child. He's young, gets free food, a roof over his head and a place to sleep, and all he has to do is a few chores.
