gaming Games you consider "classics" in their series

Recommended Posts

In certain gaming series there's always that one game, reguardless of whether it's better than the others or not, that we play just for that "nostalgic rush".

The memories of "good times" with these games are games we deem "classics".

I personally find throughout the entire series of Grand Theft Auto that one particular game in the series really stuck with me.

Come on, say it with me people...

Ahh... memories of driving over innocent civilians with a tour bus in San Fierro while the cops are on my ass as I'm blasting "White Wedding" by Billy Idol on the K-DST station.

Good times... good times...

So what games do you deem nostalgic classics?

Really tough one, but the one that I think really sticks out of its series is Command and Conquer: Generals, some may disagree with me, but I found it a hell of a lot more fun(plus it was also my first C&C game so that is the nostalgia part) than any other one even RA2.

San Andreas was good but I think Vice City was a classic. I just love the 80s South Florida atmosphere. It had some great in game radio stations. I could listen to all the radio stations except for Wildstyle. Even the talk stations K-Chat and VCPR were good. No game has compared in my opinion.

That is my fave out of the GTA series too(had to play it at a friends house when I was younger, best game ever then), but tbh I never played SA until just a few years ago, I was really late to the party on SA so I didn't spend as much time on it as the other GTA installments.

Did you at least finish the game?

If you didn't, how far did you get?

Ocarina of Time of Zelda, Modern Warfare 2 of Call of Duty, DOOM, Super Smash Bros. Melee (Even though I hate Melee, I have to give it props for its popularity and pushing smash to competitive league.) Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, and Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando... That is all XD

Oh some games that make me feel nostalgic

Empire Earth the original: played hours on this fcking game

Medal of honour: the single and mulitplayer gives out so many good memories of enjoyment I had. The multiplayer servers were nearly full and I remember 1 map similar to d-day which I loved a lot.

Call of duty 2 and 3

Commandos behind enemy lines

Easy Persona 4 for Playstation 2; most likely the best RPG put out during the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube generation.

I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees
My heart is like a broken cup
I only feel right on my knees.
I spit out like a sewer hole
Yet still receive your kiss
How can I measure up to anyone now
After such a love as this?

Megaman X improved on just about everything that the originals great while giving the series a breath of fresh air

Metal Gear Solid is much harder though because every game in that series is a classic in some way

DOOM and DOOM 2 are all-time classics. DOOM 3 is still good, but it's nowhere near the caliber of the first two games, which set the bar for that era of first-person shooters.

The classic titles from some of my favorite video game franchises;

Super Smash Bros. Melee (Super Smash Bros.) (I don't like it as much now that I have Smash on Wii U)

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sonic the Hedgehog) (Two of my favorite video games of all time)

Super Mario Bros. 3 (Super Mario Bros.) (I like it, but not as much as Super Mario World on the SNES)

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (The Legend of Zelda) (This game was a real gem for it's time, and it still holds up today, but the definitive version is easily the 3DS rerelease.)

Sly Cooper 2 (Sly Cooper) (My favorite Sly game in the franchise)

Crash Bandicoot WARPED (Crash Bandicoot) (A friend let me borrow the game one time, and I can see why so many people feel like children when they play it. It's a very solid PS1 game)

Mega Man II and III (Mega Man) (Two of my favorite NES platformers. I like III better than II, but both games hold up surprisingly well)

Pokemon Gold/Silver. These games did so much for the series. It was the first to introduce the day/night cycle, everything was fully coloured, the experience bar was displayed in battle, breeding, shinies, weather, hold items, freaking lugia, the tankiest in all of Ubers...

There's also the fact that besides their respective remakes, it has arguably the biggest post game in any pokemon game to date, even compared to OR/AS and X/Y. They not only had all of Johto on the cart, but also Kanto! Earlier in development, they struggled with storage space to finish Johto let alone the whole other region. Think about it, for the gameboy, that's impressive as hell. Then you have all the old gym leaders to battle, some minor story, Crystal added the first iteration of the battle tower, and of course Red as the final challenge.

Man, which games do I consider classics, and why? Let's see:

Mega Man 2 and 3 (self-explanitory, I enjoyed both games). The soundtrack and gameplay of both games drew me in right away, along with the difficulty. Sure 3 doesn't seem too difficult if you know what you're doing, but once you get to the Doc Robot stages and the Wily stages, the game doesn't let up. MM2 averted the "second one is the oddball in the series" trend that was popular with some games at the time. Of course, that's why I enjoyed both games. :)

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I may have played this game later than some people, but it's one of my favourite Zelda games. Once you get to the Dark World, that's when the quotient jumps tenfold. It's still one of my favourite games of all time.

Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World: I can't decide on which game but there's so much to like about both games. The difficulty stops pulling punches starting halfway in World 5 in SMB3, then gets more challenging for the rest of the game. SMW had a lot of innovations that were almost unheard of for a game 24 years ago.

Super Metroid: Another game I didn't discover until a decade ago, and it was worth the wait. Revisiting old foes like Kraid and Ridley in 16-bit was exciting, but what was more exciting? How the player can break the hell out of some intended sequences, much more than the original Metroid. Do you want to get the Wave Beam early? Yep, that's possible in this game.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and San Andreas. Vice City brought me into the series. There's a lot more than just running pedestrians and fighting police officers that got me into the series. One of the reasons is that I enjoyed the characters in both games. In Vice City, you had nominal hero Tommy Vercetti, who went from a nobody out of prison, to essentially taking over an entire city by force. San Andreas had Carl Johnson, who may be a divisive character, but he's involved in some of the best missions in the 3D trilogy, especially the last storyline mission.

There's a ton I can think of.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Diablo I

Super Mario Brothers

There's a lot more, but I can't list them all.

In the Pokemon series, the classics just depend on which generation you played first. Since my first game was Diamond, I'm saying the 4th Generation (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, H.Gold, S.Silver) were the classics. I've played all the Pokemon games except the original 3 and Yellow, yet I feel that the 4th gen is the classic-est. I blame Nostalgia. P:

Megaman X: A great addition to a great franchise and set the standard for future Megaman series and spinoffs.

Super Mario Bros 3: Super Mario Bros set the stage for the entire series but nearly every major series innovation built on Super Mario Bros 3.

Zelda A Link to The Past/Ocarina of Time: Both tied for my favorite of the series. A Link to the Past took nearly everything about the original and made it even better and Ocarina of Time set the standard for a 3D Zelda game.

Mother 2 (Earthbound): All are great games that are classics but Mother 2 is the best one and the first I played in the series. It is a real shame that it is the only game in the series released outside Japan.

Psychonauts is a classic in it's own right.  The voice acting, the comedy, and the use of graphics (not graphic resolution but how the graphics are used to create art) make the game an underrated masterpiece.

I just can't wait for Grim Fandango and The Day of the Tentacle remasters!  I never played them and I wanted to play them so badly!
