general media Overrated/Underrated Pokémon?

Odyssey

Recommended Posts

Okay, overrated/underrated isn't the right word to use, but you know where I'm going with this. Which Pokémon do you think are overly loved/hated by other fans and why?

Overrated:

  • Arceus: It isn't too great of a Pokémon at first, but when the Arceus Event in HGSS appeared, I started to think that this is a really horrible Pokémon. It leaves rather bitter memories, really.
  • Charmander: Charizard and Charmeleon are great, but Charmander is kind of ugly. Then again I never liked any of the Kanto starters. Bulbasaur and Squirtle are just as ugly as Charmander.
  • Umbreon: Yeah, I guess it's cool to know that it could glow in the dark, but it's not all that good in battle ingame. Not only that but I once had a... questionable dream about it and Espeon. That dream still creeps me out. x_x
  • Dewott: Dewott used to be one of my alltime favourites, but over the time it has gotten more and more boring for me. It's not fully evolved and I don't know what's so special about its design.

Underrated:

  • Throh/Sawk: I may be a bit biased since Sawk's my favourite Pokémon, but I do find these two to be underrated. You can catch them early in most games, they're really useful in said games and their designs are great. How could you say no to angry Onis in karate robes?
  • Garbodor/Vanillite: These two are hated for the same reason - they're hated on simply because what they're based on. I find this hatred to be dumb. Pokémon has always been a weird series. If you were in Game Freak, would you think of a trash bag/ice cream? These are professions who are designing these lovely Pokémon, not cheap amateurs who make "Fakemon". If you aren't convinced, then read this.
  • Klefki: This may sound crazy, but from a critic's point of view, I think that Klefki has the best design of any Pokémon. When it comes to character designing, the most important thing to designing one is how identifiable it is. If you can recognize a character with a silhouette very quickly, then you got a good design. Klefki is a great example. It has a shape that stands out from any other Pokémon, which makes it the most identifiable Pokémon with a silhouette. It certainly isn't underrated in the competitive scene, however.

Charizard is by far one of (if not the most) overrated Pokemon.

I like Charizard, but this I agree with 120%

Even though they're good to use I think the pokemon that get used all the time by everyone like Garchomp, Tyrannitar, and Dragonite are pretty overrated too.

Charizard is just soo darn overrated.

Every psuedo legend ever.

I think Mightyena is underrated that thing can dish strong ass attacks.

Same goes for Arbok, Zangoose and Seviper. They might seem weak but i got my team wrecked by a Zangoose plenty of times.

My favourite Pokemon is Pikachu, so I don't really have much room to call other Pokemon overrated :please: There aren't many Pokemon I really dislike, honestly, sure some I like a lot more than others, but there's no one Pokemon I think is really horrible and shouldn't exist (except maybe Mime Jr but that's cause I hate clowns), because every Pokemon is someone's favourite and that's one of the awesome things about the series, so many different Pokemon and designs that appeal in so many different ways. (It also really annoys me when people are like "ew why do you use that Pokemon it's so weak/there are better ones of X type" ...umm, maybe because I like it? >_> )

...That said, I have come to have an immediate "ugh" reaction to certain ones, mainly cause of competitive battling – Garchomp and Scizor come to mind. I also don't really like Arceus, mainly cause I don't like the concept of a "god of all Pokemon". It just doesn't seem "right" to me, but idk if it's overrated because I don't see that many fans of it.

As for underrated, Whiscash! One of my top favourites because it's adorable and derpy, and not actually bad battling-wise (though I stay far away from the competitive side of things so I don't really know), particularly with Dragon Dance. Whiscash needs lots more love (but not a third or Mega Evolution because I don't trust them not to make it ugly) :wub:Barboach too, they're both adorable and I really want an official Barboach plush because there isn't one yet.

Also the three elemental monkeys, Pansage/Pansear/Panpour. I see a lot of hate for them for some reason, and I don't really understand why, I think the little ones are super cute and the final evos I'm mostly neutral on except Simipour, which I think has an awesome design.

I also agree with you on all the Pokemon that get aggressively hated on for their design, especially Vanillite which again I think is really cute (ice cream Pokemon = awesome!! and, similarly, Swirlix. Slurpuff I'm not so keen on though) – especially if the argument is that designs were better in G1, because lolno. There have always been Pokemon of random objects as well as the more animal-like ones, it's not a sign that they're "running out of ideas". (and ty for that link, I think it just made me a Trubbish/Garbodor fan, though I always thought they got way too much hate)

I can probably think of more but that will do for now :P

Blasphemy, Charmander is 11/10 adorable

I don't like Salamance that much. In the newer games, his model looks kind of dumb flying in place.

I don't know of overrated, because I got bored of Pokemon since G4. anyway, I think Manaphy is very overlooked, but that's because it's very cute  , I dunno of any competitive value for them

Underrated:

Chikorita/Bayleef/Meganium: A lot of people don't choose Chikorita as a starter because it's weak to a lot of Johto gyms. Just because it is doesn't mean it's a bad Pokemon. Besides it being awesome in the anime, it has an adorable design and can be used as a decent wall.

Overrated:

Charizard: Everyone raves about it. It's a bad ass in the anime, it's a freaking fire breathing dragon, has the epic design. But really, Charizard is only average in battle. It can be destroyed by rock type moves like Stealth Rock combined with the not as good defense. It also has quite a few weaknesses being a fire/flying type. At least it's immune to ground.

Most legendaries: Everyone uses them in competitive battling. But I never cared for most of them.

Lucario: I just never saw the big deal in it.

Another underrated one is Manetric. I have one on my team in Omega Ruby and it's prove to be surprisingly useful. And I don't know why, but I really like Manetric's design.

Overrated? "Insert any final evolution dragon type here"
Ah yes Dragonine, Salamance, Garchomp, Hydragon and I can't remember if there's one for Gen 6. The only one I kind of like is Dragonite. They all are the same deal with taking the longest to get to their final evolutions.

Hm... I'll really have to think on this one.

I'll agree on Dewott. Which may seem weird considering how much I love Samurott. I think that Dewott's design is... well, I suppose 'stupid' is the only word I can think of.

In general the dragon types are just not very appealing to me. Dragonite is okay, but not one I've ever used. The only dragon type I ever used was Tyrantrum in X. I really like it, but the other dragons? They're generally pretty unappealing to me. They tend to look ugly, and not cool. Like Garchomp? Ew.

As for underrated, I'd say that in general Pokemon from beyond Generation III are underrated. Poor generation V especially. I have many favorites from Generation V and VI.

For specifics I'll go with the aforementioned Samurott and Zebstrika. For some reason a lot of people like Samurott's earlier stages, but not Samurott? That I can not even begin to understand. Dewott is a terrible design, IMO, while Samurott is awesome. My favorite fully evolved starter of all starters from all generations.

Zebstrika seems to get a lot of hate for its usefulness. I don't mean competitively because personally I could not care less about the competitive scene. I mean a lot disliked Zebstrika for usefulness in-game. I used one and never had any problems whatsoever!

Probably because people say that gen V sucks just because they have the ice cream Pokemon or the garbage Pokemon... well liking the generation with the magnet Pokemon and the pile of sludge Pokemon.

The most overrated and underrated Pokémon? Hmm...Let me see...

The Pokémon I find to be overrated is the first Uber, Mewtwo. I just find Mewtwo uninteresting now compared to the other legendaries and many players wanted the Pokémon to be in the next Super Smash Bros. game. When that Greninja Trailer popped up a lot of people expected Mewtwo to be in it. No joke. It's Mewtwo this, Mewtwo that and Mewtwo Mewtwo everywhere. Now that it is available as a DLC, they got their wish but I still think it's overrated.

Now for the most underrated. The Pokémon I think it's one of the most underrated ones is Quagsire. I have that Pokémon and it's really good when it comes to physical bulkiness. It can use Recover, absorb Water-type moves with Water Absorb and stops sweepers with Unaware. To top it all off, it's faces makes me smile every time I see it. Quagsires deserve more love, don't they?

Can I say Floatzel is underrated? It's pretty great at sweeping due to its high Speed and Attack stats. Don't really see it around too often.

As for an overrated Pokemon, Pikachu. It's the series mascot, yes, but it's not really... that special. Pretty weak stats and learnset, and its evolved form, Raichu, isn't really that much better.

Porygon-Z has to be one of the most underrated sweepers ever, and everyone seems to think that giving it Download as it's ability is what makes it crap. But give it Adaptability, Nasty Plot, Dark Pulse, Tri-Attack, and HP-Fighting, and you have one of the scariest sweepers in the game. Ghosts get wrecked by Dark Pulse. Rock, Steel, and Dark Types fall to HP-Fighting, and everything else will get demolished by a STAB Tri-Attack because of it's humongous SpA stat, OHKO'ing most pokemon after one turn of Nasty Plot, which you can easily do if you have screens set up for it.

As much as I love it, I have to say Mewtwo is way overhyped and overrated. He's strong, and good, but he's far from the strongest legendary..

Another one is probably Greninja, not that good of a pokemon imho.

Underrated- Dragalge. Got overshadowed by Goodra I guess... Dragalge can get Adaptability now though, so I really hope it gets some more use. Best thing about it not being too popular now though is that half the time I've used it my opponents can't seem to figure out what type it is. ^_^

Overrated- Blaziken. Not that I hate it or anything, in fact I love it. It's just that, it may be the best Fire/Fighting type Pokémon, but I don't think it's as OP as it's generally thought to be... it's strong, but it can't take a hit, especially super-effective priority. Plus Pokémon like Jellicent and Azumarill wall it. ;)
