It is in fact blue and black but if your eyes are adjusted to a certain range of light it should appear as white and gold. I saved the image on my phone and went back to ask someone later about it and it changed for me proving my point.

Also if the picture is bright enough it can appear as sky blue and a lighter shade of gold.

It's white with a hint of blue, and gold. Really just put it in Photoshop. This has got to be a troll picture where people trollin' it's black and blue.

To put it clear: the picture of debate is CLEARLY white/light blue ish + gold, but the actual model, or possibly the same dress under different light conditions is blue and black (or so they say).

Sorry if I ruined the trollin' for some peeps

the colors of the dress in the picture are a pretty desaturated blue, and a dark, desaturated orange.
Just put it into any image-editing program, that´s what the actual colors on the photo are, if isolated from the rest.

That doesn´t mean that these are the actual colors of the dress, though.

Our brains developed to tell us the information about the base color of an object, and not the actual color that may happen as a result of colored light.

For example,i look at the scene and assume that it is an outdoor scene, maybe nighttime, with an artifical lightsource from the back.

My brain realizes that a white dress would probably not appear to be actual white in such a context, but blue because of reflected moonlight, and pretty much tells me that the original color of the dress is probably white.(where it appears to be blue)

It is kind of a dilemma, since the dress is not directly lit by any other lightsource, so there is  some context lacking.

In real-life, you could just look at the dress in a slightly different perspective, and the context might change a lot.

It is basically just our brains trying to get information out of way too little data, since we usually have much more data to work with.

No matter how hard I look at it, I just don't understand how people manage to see white in the picture. I see blue and black as those are the actual colours of the dress...

Look at those three pictures here:

http://www.leparisien.fr/laparisienne/societe/de-quelle-couleur-est-cette-robe-la-question-qui-affole-la-toile-27-02-2015-4562839.php

You can clearly see that the white is not actually white but is caused by the complete saturation of the light. All this because whoever took the picture can't take a proper one.

Hi there.

Just a heads-up that I did some thread maintenance here. I've moved the original thread into Media Discussion under the [Web] tag and also merged it with a similar topic.

I found an educational (and hopefully correct) post about it over here. It's apparently called a Cornsweet illusion, and it works because our brains see color relative to what it's surrounded by and how we think it's lit. The idea is, some people somehow see all the yellow, crummy lighting and correct the dress to be similar colors. It's really really weird, and it makes me wonder what else I've been confusing all this time

Saw the blue and black all along B)

That harsh lighting in the background is what makes me see this as a white and gold dress that's in some kind of shadow ^_^ I just don't see how that could be blue at all  Edited by Pink Mist

I wonder how many of the people who actually profess it to be blue and black really thought it was gold and white, but having heard it was REALLY B&b, said just that to seem more wise...

This is the stupid discussion that has made my faith in humanity shrink to the size of a mustard seed cut in half. That my friends is all I will say on the matter.
