G4 Smooze grows by eating and digesting gems.

Discord made it small again by simply taking the (already dissolved) jewels out of it.

Now is the question: Would he have been able to do the same thing to Tirek, if Tirek gave him more time to think after the betrayal? Simply put his talon into him and ripped all the magic out?

In "Return of Harmony", he was able to manipulate Cutie Marks to an extent.

Cutie Marks are directly connected to magic, as they vanish when Tirek drinks Magic.

Therefore Discord should be able to handle magic.

As far as I understood it, the Smooze digested the gems. Dissolved them. Broke them up into their molecular ingredients.

And when it comes to molecular ingredients, we are all living piles of goo. Unless we are rocks or something. Which Tirek isn´t.

I don't think he could have because magic seems a lot more volatile than mere gold and jewels. I think he would have done it if he could and not given Tirek any chance to sway him to his side, since he did it here so casually.

That could very well be true. Honestly, I don't know where the limits of Discord's magic lie. Apparently it's not limitless, since Twilight with all the alicorn magic was on equal footing with Tirek who had all the regular magic plus Discord's power. Or maybe Tirek didn't know how to wield it properly; he never did show any reality bending.

My headcanon on that matter is that Tirek tried to control it, and for some reason ended up with a terrible urge to smite defenceless trees.

After that he stopped trying to control it.

No. The smooze seems a lot more neutral and almost like an animal because it didn't really care that it was being shoved aside by discord, or put in closets, etc.

That depends on the closet. If, for example, it is a closet somewhere at Unseen University, the problem would have been solved for Equestria.
