The way Granny Smith said it doesn't seem like a figure of speech. I think. This is probably just an inconsistency; I reckon we can safely ignore the reunion in the first episode for the purposes of this discussion.

Don't forget that Luna controls the moon, and it may run on a different schedule than what we're used to. Heck maybe it's not even a constant, and the Apple family reunions take place sporadically depending on Luna's mood.

They're young adults, I think the mane 6 are around 20 years old (Rarity being the oldest at ~24 years old, and Twilight Sparkle or Rainbow Dash the youngest at 18~19 years old).

Thank you for posting this image, I've been looking for a nice hi-res shot of that particular frame. 

 

However, I always envisioned this as being a "toon cake", namely it doesn't have another side to it so the candles you see are all there are. In fact, I envision the creation of this cake by whoever animated it went something along the lines of being told "Make a cake with 21 candles on it." And so they did, eventually limited by the fact that the final camera angle ended up not being able to see over the top, but the visible candle count remained the same.

 

Also I think this was an attempt to avoid controversy in case someone counts the candles (like we did) and claims RD was underage when drinking all that cider, so there had to be at least 21 candles present.

 

Also I think 30+ would be too old for Rainbow compared to the others, and we know from "Chronicles" they were all roughly around the same age in the flashbacks, +-1 year. I put them all in their early 20's, with Spike following behind them by about 5 or 6 years, depending on whether Twilight entered the gifted class right when she started Kindergarten or transferred from regular public schooling before first grade.

 

Cheese Sandwich is probably around Pinkie's age, though older than her. Even though Weird Al is much older IRL, if it were following his real-life age he would already have been an adult when he attended Pinkie's first party. 

 

The CMC and all their classmates are all meant to be tweens for marketing purposes, so put them at around 10-11. Plus their current size fits in with how they looked in "Sweetiebelle Toils", which is how the M6 looked in "Chronicles" - around 5-6.

 

I have a deja vu feeling I posted this all before, but see no age thread in any of the topics I posted to in the past. How strange!

I used to think the cake meant RD was 21, but then I heard that supposedly they said the number of candles on the cake doesn't mean anything.

Remember it is her "Birthiversery" because she came to town on her birthday.  Some of the candles are probably for her age, some for coming to town.

 

Since by season 4 Dash has been in town over 1 year, (IMO it is her 2nd anniversary) a more interesting question would be "Why does Dash have to tell her this?  Shouldn't she already know?"

Trying to define their ages in human years is pointless. They are magical ponies, several of whom have been stated to be hundreds of years old that ARE NOT Princesses, like Granny Smith for example (who was there for the founding of ponyville several hundred years earlier) 

 

In Party pooped Pinkie had her parents parties planned up to their 500'th birthday, something that didn't get very much incredulity at all beyond the simple fact that she plans that far ahead.

 

Celestia and Luna have been around longer of course, and they don't age the way normal ponies do, but that does not mean that the rest of Equestrian society is confined to the 100 years or less rules that our genes follow. 

 

Now in terms of periods of their lives, I'd say the mane six were in their young adult phase, whatever that would be in equestrian aging, while the CmC are entering their early adolescence.

Hasn't this topic been done multiple times already? Not to be picky but I see this topic like nearly all the time.

 

For me, I say the Mane Six's ages are about 20-22 and Rainbow Dash's birthday cake from Pinkie Pride is one piece of evidence on this.
