I am also curious. The longest I can think of is Fallout: Equestria, but I don't think its the longest.

I think there is one  that is longer, I think I read somewhere that there is one that is longer than the Lord of the Rings trilogy combined!

I'm thinking 'The Chase' by kudzuhaiku on Fimfiction, it's currently topping in at 1,950,126 words and 783 chapters, with constant near-daily updates. It's a fair mile longer than anything else I've ever seen. I was thinking FoE: Project Horizons, but that's only 1.5M words or so. Interested to see what else comes up.

The longest on FiMFiction is Saphroneth's MLP Time Loops with 1,612,801 words as of today. It looks like it's still being updated, too. There's two others on there with 1,806,493 words and 1,950,126 words, but both of them are rated M. There's currently six stories on FiMFiction with over a million words.

Edit: I got ninja'd.

I know "Diaries of a Madman", with 1,806,493 words total

Then, there is the "Pony Pov's", which are a series of fanfictions with different separated seasons with more than 2 Million words, I don't know if that counts

To my knowledge, The Chase is the currently the longest ongoing fic on Fimfiction. How someone could write nearly two million words almost daily for over a year is beyond me. Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons clocked in at around 1.5 Million, but that was over a dozen chapters ago so I wouldn't be surprised if it's surpassed 1.8 Million by now.

The End of Ponies was aiming to be the longest one...but I believe that fic was abandoned a while ago.

In FimFiction, the longest story seems to be "The Chase" with 1,953,646 words in 784 chapters as of this moment and is still incomplete.

The longest story I think I've read is "Spiders & Magic: Rise of Spider-Mane" with 367,232 words in 61 chapters.

Who would read anything that long unless it's a legitimate series of novels by a professional writer?

Writing fan fiction that long is a waste of time and effort. Besides, a real writer knows that writing is about quality, not quantity.

I disagree partially.

It is true that even a short fanfiction with about 2,000 words can be a great one. So great that everyone likes it.

But a long fanfiction with hundreds of thousands of words and dozens of chapters can also be a great one as long as it's enjoyable and interesting to read. The risk of the story getting boring and repetitive is a risk, though.

When you look at Fimfiction, though, you notice that EVERY SINGLE fanfiction has at least 1 dislike, especially those which some deed a great fanfic (I myself don't really trust what that meter shows). When browsing on Rating order, you do notice that stories with one single chapter are on top but there are also stories with multiple chapters like Winter Bells which is 12 chapters long with 95,683 words.

So yeah, quality IS important, not quantity, but if quality can be maintained in long stories that's great IMO and that is NEVER a waste of time.

Edit: I know I went off topic on this. Sorry.

That's true but as I said, fan fictions are no match for professional authors. What would be your pitch to readers that something that's as long as 500 pages about a world they didn't even create can capture one's attention for that long? Since fan fictions typically focus on dialogue, it can actually feel long. Such long stories feel like they are overcompensating. For what? Perhaps a lack of skill.
