i am not even going to record it because i have a terrible cold and i sound like an ould lady who is constantly out of oxigen. but when i am better i'll maybe record myself singing because i hear a lot of people say i am good at it, and i think so to. i like to do it at least and even if i sound really bad i'd still sing because i don't care what people think of me

I use Audacity, but there are numerous audio recording software packages out there.

 

The great thing about these progs, is that you can use them to tweak your mic gain so that background noise (especially your computer) isn't noticable.

 

You don't want to be too quiet, as it may cause quality issues when increasing volume in a later editing process, but setting it too high means picking up unwanted background sounds.

 

Activate your mic with one of these progs running and you should see the input sound levels. Lower this until you only just see no action when you are silent.

This will give you minimal background noise, and maximal voice data.

 

The best thing about Audacity is not just that you can alter the levels as you record, but the mic gain you set in the program is exported as the general mic gain for the whole comp. Which is really useful if you then go on to use another program that takes a mic input like fraps.
