Which episode gets overhyped?

You can add another one to the "Slice of Life is overrated" bandwagon. Background ponies are not interesting to me in the slightest.

I thought of another episode that many people seem to like, but I can't stand: Sweet and Elite

Let's count all the awful deeds Rarity commits during the episode:

  1. Lying about who Rainbow Dash is, to protect her reputation
  2. Neglects working on Twilight's dress. This one pisses me off the most, because her lack of effort results in her accidentally making what Twilight wanted. Moral: no need to put in hard work, keep procrastinating and the work will do itself.
  3. Mistreats Opalescence to make an excuse (Also lying to her friends in the process)

By the end of the episode, no one is none the wiser about all of these things. She gets away with it all without having to apologize or confess. What an awful moral to teach to little kids!

Really good point. I'm actually not too crazy about that episode (or most Rarity episodes) either.

I've now seen two threads where Slice of Life has gotten a ton of hate. I'm loving it. :toldya: (This site really needs an evil grin emoticon.)

Seriously, I stopped watching it four times because of how cringeworthy it was. I don't know why I bothered finishing it. Completely fucking terrible.

Also, MMC still gets a lot of love here but it's probably the most potential the show's wasted since it started. I still think if they hadn't made it a musical (seriously, why?) and made it a two-parter it would've been great though.

The problem with that episode isn't that it's too short, or that it's a musical. Its biggest flaw is the fact that the ending is completely detached from the rest of the episode. Twilight swaps everyone's cutie marks, then fixes them, then she's a princess for some reason.

The original script had a minor difference which ended up making the ending more coherent: Twilight tried asking Celestia for help, but the reply she got indicated that not even an Alicorn was powerful enough to undo the magic (Also, the cutie marks were swapped by Pandora's Box rather than a botched spell, but that's not important).

In this version of the story, Twilight bringing everything back to normal feels more like an accomplishment worthy of becoming a princess, since she did something other Alicorns could not, meaning that her power level is already close or superior to Celestia and Luna's.

Of course, making it into a two-parter or not have as many songs WOULD have helped it too, but only if they fixed the biggest flaw of the story as well.

Also, I really like Cloudchaser's mane!

A minor change?! The episode could've been both different and significantly better had it went like this

Well, it's minor in that it's just adding a small scene of Twilight sending a letter and getting a reply. It would take up one minute at most.

I disagree, even the smallest change can be a major change. The episode would've made more sense with that little scene(as well as that Pandora's Box you brought up rather than a Sin Cara level botched spell)

It's still just a small addition to the episode. A minor change CAN have major repercussions.

I've never heard about that. It's a shame they didn't go down that path instead, it would've been so much better.

the verry first 2 parter of MLP I think its ok but not that great

I agree. Hell when I first got into the fandom in early 2011 (can't really remember which month exactly) almost everyone suggested just watching it to be introduced to the characters and waiting until about episode 4 or 5 to decide whether MLP was for you or not. Then everything in season 1 became golden for some reason. I honestly think it's the weakest two parter.

To address the elephant in the room for me, I found "The Cutie Re-Mark" disappointing in its reversion to old two-parter formulas, namely too much focus on Twilight and the Mane 6 and making Equestria dependent on them alone to the point where they'd be helpless without them, rather than developing new roles for the other characters. It really failed to capitalize on anything different "The Cutie Map" did. As a result of that issue, Starlight Glimmer's reformation was not only rushed but shamelessly derivative of other villain reformations on this show (particularly that of Sunset Shimmer), and the episode made absolutely no use of the four heroes of the season premiere (Party Favor, Double Diamond, Night Glider, and Sugar Belle), demoting them to shallow cameos.

Second, I'd put "Equestria Games", both from Hasbro and the fandom's side. The fandom's overwhelming judging of this episode by its failure to deliver on its hyped buildup is unfair to the episode on its own merits. But even then, the episode really fails at backing up a good self-confidence moral by playing Spike's overcompensation for laughs and stalling even further by giving a contrived situation to give Spike some service as the hero. When a character is trying to overcome such an issue, we're supposed to sympathize with them, not be asked to laugh at their misfortunes.

I always heard how Discord is the best villain, than i watched the two part Episode with him starring and was bored.

Discord is just completely uninteresting for me and i also dont know the Actors who plays him.

So...i find for myself, that every Episode with Discord got to overhyped.

I dont like Discord.

I found Twilight's Kingdom to be pretty blah barring Discord's relapse + second redemption. That part was great, as it addressed lingering concerns about the hastiness of his original reformation and showed how whether good or bad, he's become the kind of person who wants somebody to be good or bad with. His part of the story was very human. Overall the episode was solid, but I found the parts focusing on Twilight (so most of the episode) less interesting in comparison.

Might just need a rewatch, though. It's been a while :derp:.
