John Williams has composed music to many of my favourite movies, like the Poseidon Adventure, the Towering Inferno, Jaws, Superman, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and Harry Potter, his music is iconic, and gives each film a stand out identity, plus give moments in each scenes, like charm or suspense, especially Raiders of the Lost Ark, where he gives the Ark of the Covenant its own theme song, and once you have heard it, you will never forget, it provides mystery and power to this artefact.

Hans Zimmer is good, for he has composed music for Backdraft, the Lion King, and the Gladiator, but I love his work for Black Hawk Down, it is one of my favourite soundtracks of all time, however, Hans is too prolific, his music can sound too much alike, like his game soundtracks, and the Dark Knight soundtrack was not as memorable as Danny Elfman's 1989 Batman, James Horner is another composer that has music that sounds similar to previous work, I think Michael Giacchino is the closest composer who could match John Williams, after all his game soundtracks are special, like Medal of Honour and Call of Duty, which is why I give my vote to John Williams.

I agree with everything here (thanks for saving me time writing it all out, King Edouard!)

John Williams is simply the best there has ever been. Even Hans Zimmer himself has said he can't compete with him. John Williams not only has an unparalleled touch with his music, he has also pioneered the style of creating themes for different characters and situations. Other composers have tried to mimic this (LOTR for example) but don't know how to use those different themes. They either play them too fast, slow or with the wrong arrangements or emotional tenor.

James Horner was an excellent composer but had a repetitive streak. Superb in Aliens and Willow, but otherwise a bit to familiar sounding.

Michael Giaccino is definitely in the upper ranks. But even with Jurassic World the best musical cues were John Williams' original themes.

One of my favorites was Basil Polydouris (Conan the Barbarian, Hunt For Red October) for his sweeping, almost painfully felt scores, but sadly he's no longer with us.

Danny Elfman has a great intuitive sense of movie music and really slam dunked Batman, but as is the same with all these very gifted composers mentioned here, none can compare with John Williams.

My hat's off to all these talents. I hate to diss any of them. But let's face it, only one can be the best.

Definitely John Williams. With the entire Star Wars soundtrack, that alone could beat most movie composers. Though Madagascar's soundtrack was impressive, it's not enough for Hans Zimmer to be better than the legendary movie composer who has been nominated for an Oscar FIFTY TIMES. That's second only to Walt Disney's 59.

Neither. Jerry Goldsmith FTW. (RIP)

Although if I have to pick between the two choices, I only have to look at my ripped tracKS on my computer to see who of like more - Hans Zimmer has the most.

Though if I'm going by that measure, then I would have to include James Horner in the mix as well. (Also RIP.)
