R63 characters

This kind of is a continuation of my previous question of Taboos in site. 

 

What is your opinion of R63 OC's and when I say this I don't mean your OC as a R63 What I mean is taking an Canon character and gender swapping it to play around with. For instance Prince Duskshine, Applesnack, etc. I'm really against things like this because I'm at this idea that it's a lazy character like a reskin.

 

I'd like to hear more opinions on this, am I wrong? Or is an R63 just a copypasta by swapping him to her or vice versa?

I don't really like r63 either, because when I browse for Fluttershy clop (please don't attack me, it's just an example), I always cet Butterscotch or Futashy, and that pisses me off. Plus I have some transgender friends that don't like this AT ALL, and I think that is getting on my brain a bit x)

I've come across many genderbent ponies in the past, but I just scrolled past them. I don't care for them one bit, but if others enjoy swapping genders like that, I can't stop them.

I think the other question is why? Why is it that people to include myself find R63 characters distasteful? This is built up from a long debate with a person who likes to RP with a character called Prince Dusk Shine (R63 Twilight), I'm not one to hate strange OC's. I got a Ghost, Pegacorn, even a Dragon Pony. Just why is it this character that makes me cringe?

Well, I've seem interesting rule63 fics. I don't think they should be considered OCs, as they are the same characters we love but of the opposite sex. I don't mind it at all

I love genderswapping!

I like imagining what someone would look like if they had just been born the opposite gender.

I've imagined what I might be like if I was a dude.

 

Though I think you believe that the creators take more credit for genderswaps than they do. Yeah they have to be creative with the design, but for everything else it's just, "Hey, check it out, I drew them as a boy/girl now. Let's see how it changes interactions from the original source material." And because of subconscious cultural thoughts about gender, it DOES change the interactions (usually in a funny way).

 

They know all they did was basically give a new look to an existing character.

What they're proud of in the design itself.

I don't really have any opinion on it, I can see how it can be a tad lazy in some cases but there are some stories where it might make a bit more sense.

I look up clop quite a bit and only occasionally run into R63 pics though who knows it might be because my source may be different from yours. You may want to check out derpibooru, it has a great filter system that allows a lot of options in terms of what you can filter of not, you could filter the R63 tag for example yet still see as much clop as you want.

Moving away from the clop stuff and onto character development, I can understand The idea of mixing up the interactions. But when playing with a canon character, (I.e. Twilight.) wouldn't just genderswapping be seen in the same sense as a recolor or something else? You say that it changes the interactions subconsciously but how? From what I've seen the interactions would be exactly the same just replacing her with him, or even attempted ships because "Rainbow Dash is a guy now so it's not weird."

 

I don't know, it just sounds like a problematic scenario which needs to be dealt with carefully and cleanly. But the line is too thin to be done right without some crazy zany stuff affecting role play or character development especially when it's supposed to be exactly the same as a canonical character just change stallion to mare.

 

I'm more on the idea of this in a role play sense. But the opinions in general seem to be on the fence, on one side is a distaste for R63 canonical, while others could see it as a chance to "mix things up" a bit.

Well first off I meant it changes the interactions from the viewpoint of the AUDIENCE. Unless you have no preconceptions about gender in your society or are completely blind to gender yourself, the gender swap will change things.

 

Next is you keep calling them OCs. No one that makes gender swaps calls them Original Characters. Theyre like an alternate universe creation.

For genderbent canon characters, I'm not really fond of seeing anypony from the show being the opposite gender. Genderbent OCs, however, are a little more interesting to see.

Personally I love the idea and I wish it was explored more in shows. It brings into question things like "how much would this character actually change if they were the opposite sex?" or "How would these characters interact with each other if their genders were swapped?" 

 

What if two characters that would never even think of dating in the regular version would be soul mates gender swapped? What if a couple that works in the canon would not work in the other version? 

 

A ton of interesting concepts like Nature vs Nurture, gender identity, social norms, and a slew of other things could be easily explored in stories that feature r63. Sadly its mostly used for...well you know... but I digress

Gender swapping is a strange idea at this point, I'm hearing that it changes the viewpoint of the audience and I'm curious how? I'm kind of dense when it comes to genders. The idea that gender and race bring such a massive change in opinion of how good or bad it would be is kind of a strange concept. 

 

Buck Testa brings up a good point however they have portrayed males in the show a few times almost always demonizing them to a point ((I'm looking at you Blue Blood.)) And not wanting to spoil anything for the 5th season so I'm going to redact that one part regarding a "Possible gender swap?" (Still don't know the spoiler commands for this stuff. pluss it was kind of iffy if it could be counted.)  But I digress, the idea of a character changing genders would not affect the dynamic of the show unless they were to drastically change the character's personalities to go against their already established personalities. So an R63 of a character is just the same if they all swapped colors. They would still be the same characters and gender would more likely than not be a pressing issue in the show.

You might want to try quoting other posters, because I have no idea who exactly you're addressing. But no, that's not usually how genderswap creators do things. It's usually just gender and appearance and everything else remains the same character wise. Now you said you're just kind of oblivious to genders and gender roles in general. So even if people explain the appeal of genderswaps, you just might not ever get it. But here's an example:

 

Remember the episode where Rarity was kidnapped by the Diamond Dogs? Well imagine a parallel universe where that exact same event happened, but everyone's genders were swapped. For a LOT of people, this hilarious episode suddenly becomes 10x more hilarious JUST from the unconventionality of the situation. Instead of the prissy but cunning girl annoying and outsmarting a bunch of muscular, unhygienic, dumb dudes, you get a prissy but cunning GUY annoying a bunch of muscular, unhygienic, dumb GALS.

 

And then Rarity's whining coming out of a dude? OMG, I'd probably die laughing...

 

Elusive (Male!Rarity): Hey you spilled my drink! OOF! Not so tiiiiiIGHT!!

 

Female!Diamond Dog 1: Ha! Make the noises all you want. But move while you make them! HYAH MULE!! *slaps Elusive's rear*

I love the concept mostly because I was introduced to it from the excellent On a Cross and Arrow. Which features the Mane Six meeting the alternate versions of themselves. I say "meeting" but the majority of the story is the Mane Six trying to avoid contact with anypony and trying to get home but they inevitably end up encountering themselves.

 

There is some romance and it gets suggestive in places but it is never crude. More "teasing and flirtatious" than "lewd and pornographic."

 

I highly recommend it should you get the chance.

I actually find this concept to be rather interesting.

Some characters actually would act rather differently in this kind of dimension and it is interesting finding out how different someone like Prince Solaris is to Princess Celestia or how different Rainbow Blitz acts compared to Rainbow Dash.

Plus it gives room for some good artwork.
