web Youtube's copyright system messed up again. Any good alternatives?

Yeah, I'm ready to end this. It's not enough that I need to shorten every video to almost 15 minutes and can never fix this or "Verify" my account, it's not enough that the "Monetization" system is utter crap, it's not enough that only the big channels that have the power to object are actually getting youtube to lay off them, while it continues to bugger the small channels that have no say in the matter...

 

I'm tempted to just give up on this and move to a different, better video-sharing site. Youtube's dead, and there's a greedy, bloated, rotting corpse getting puppeted around by our favourite Google. Any recommendations?

There are no alternatives to youtube. Non that are nearly as big and as efficient as any other, sadly.

Ehhhh, what? That is a little bit of an exaggeration like you think? Okay perhaps I should have added in the option of, you can make a petition or join and existing petition to change it. You and other small time users do have pretty much know say in youtube, it is a massive company, it holds all the cards, it does what it wants, that is reality, and the reality is when everything is in someone else court you either play ball with them or play ball somewhere else, people can complain and complain all they like but if they put no action behind it then it won't do any good.

On topic: Dailymotion and various other services like that are alternatives. The problem is they do not offer near enough features, nor do they offer any kind of world-reaching power that YouTube has, being run by Google.

 

At the moment, there is no real competition for the number one spot. And number 2 and onwards are so insiginificant when it comes to defining Intenret policies that you might as well just not make vids if you're looking for an alternative.

 

The only thing that can help is if YouTubers all agree to a site to transition to, and we incorporate more andmore of our content on there. After enough time, we should cut our YT content down to previews - things people will get by going to the new site. Google needs to lose money to change. So let's make it bleed.

Dailymotion seems like a good site, and its video time limits are more reasonable, but I'm not sure if it has a monetization system or not. Then again, the real money is in Patreon and I'm glad we can all collectively stop pretending that a potential three US Cents a month is a beautiful career.

While Youtube's copyright system can be messed up some tips to keep your videos online:

 

• Make sure you check which game developers are not okay with footage of their games being used. Nintendo is a very hit or miss area, I know they will flag any games they know are being emulated or using cheats. Phil Fish went on a rampage of people using footage from his game Fez. For reference check the Let's Play Friendly developer list. While it sucks that companies can flag let's plays, at least you can avoid the ones who are notorious for doing it.
• Make sure your videos are properly tagged. Sometimes people get mad and flag a video for being in the wrong tags.
• BACK UP YOUR VIDEOS. In the event of a wrongful copyright claim, make sure your videos are backed up so you can re-upload in the event the claim is resolved.
• Edit your footage. I know it sounds like a no brainer, but the automated system sometimes flags false positives because of too much of the content appearing like the original. I use a combination of real life footage with the gameplay and I keep the music in game so quiet that it's impossible to rip it even if you were able to edit out me talking. The music is the part that gets a lot of people.
• Disclaimers can help sometimes, but they are not a safety blanket.
• Showing the name of the game is always a good idea. It shows the developers you are not claiming it as your own and you're offering advertising of said game too.
• Avoid story driven games like visual novels and such.
