movies/tv Recommend some good TV-MA Anime

Anime is a genre I have felt rather disconnected from for a while With both Death Note and One Piece disappointing me greatly, I have had trouble finding a good anime with a deep story. It seems anime that usually has these attributes are rated TV-MA, and those usually take more risks. Attack on Titan is one of my favorite shows of all time and I hope I can find other shows that give me the same sensation.

I want to find more great shows like those. I want my interest for anime to be revitalized. So what are some good recommendations for TV-MA anime? I might make a topic for TV-14 eventually but I want to be specific here.

Ones that I know of:

Attack on Titan

Elfen Lied

I believe Monster is TV-MA? I liked that one. Can't think of any others.

These are all good suggestions, haven't heard of most of these. :)

Have you seen either of the Fullmetal Alchemist series?

I have, I actually have watched some of the early episodes of Brotherhood. It didn't strike any chords with me really, but maybe it gets better as it goes?

I think that's often the case with anime.  I mean, except for the ones that run for a zillion episodesAdmittedly, I've only seen the first series.  I thought that was good, but I've heard that Brotherhood is better.

(edited)

Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Afro Samurai immediately come to mind. Ninja Scroll and Fist of the North Star are older and did not age well, but are still decent.

Lupin The Third: A classic about the grandson of the master thief and classic literary character Arsene Lupin. Lupin and his gang travel all over the world to steal all sorts of stuff while they run from Inspector Zenigata of Interpol and other law enforcement, rival thieves and shady characters. It is most m rated due to having a few scenes of full frontal nudity that would not be a big deal in Japan but is here in the US though the english dub does censor most of it making it a bit closer to TV-14 in my opinion. The original manga is definitely M though as Lupin does not have as much restraint as he does in the anime and him and his gang are not as reluctant to kill.

Cowboy Bebop: It is relatively short but awesome, it a sci fi anime involving bounty hunters with the main character Spikes past dogging him.

Shimoneta: This is set in an alternate timeline modern Japan where everything "perverted" is banned in order to have a more "decent" society. The main characters are "erotic terrorists" who are trying to break this social censorship first by reaching the students at their local high school with sexual information.

Prison School: These 5 friends have recently been admitted to what until recently was an all girls school. After running afoul of the secret student council by being caught spying on female students in the locker room they are placed in the school prison where they are subject to rather harsh punishments. There is a ton of fanservice and innuendo in this one with one of them being a huge masochist who enjoys being brutally punished for example.

Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate: vampires, nazis, insane priests and a ton of blood and gore.

Akira: A classic anime movie about a teenager with psychic powers who goes on a homicidal rampage.

Crying Freeman: This story is a serious tear jerker about a man brainwashed into being a hitman for the Chinese Mafia.

Other than the ones recommended, particularly Berserk which I agree with due to it's excellent portrayal of the Byronic Hero among other things.

Here's some that haven't been mentioned:

Now and Then, Here and There: Don't let the animation fool you, it's an anime about war and all that comes with it.

Red Garden: Other than the random musical moments in it (They were paying Homage to Broadway), this is a very unique show that I will gladly recommend to someone that wants to try an anime that doesn't really act like anime. It's a show about a group of dead teenaged girls in New York City, Forced to fight Zombie like creatures. My advice is get passed the first five episodes and you should be golden.

Shiki: Small town gets invaded by vampires and we get to see the story from both point of views.

Serial Experiment Lain: I'm not going to tell you what this is about because even that seems to spoil the entire story. Just go watch it.

Paranoia Agent: A mysterious boy on roller blades with a bat keeps attacking random people, but how much of what they see about him is real and how much of it is in their heads?

Baccano!: A fantasy caper story involving Alchemists, Gangers and immortality. I know this is the Wikipedia description but this is the best way for me to vaguely describe it without spoiling a whole bunch of it.

Mnemosyne: Private Investigator, Rin is immortal and solves crimes relating to other Immortals. Warning this one has a lot of torture scenes in it and sexual content, I will only put a warning on this one due to the excess of it all.

Evangelion: Teenagers fight aliens in war machines and deep psychological trauma happens. I know this is skimping over a lot of the series good points but again, this is one of those "You need to see it so I won't spoil it." kind of deals. This is a quintessential anime that is good watch if you want to see the origins a lot of things in modern Mech shows.

Higurashi Koro Ni and Higurashi Kai: A horror anime based around the mysterious town of Hinamizawa and its residents slow descent into madness.  While it does experience a genre shift in Season 2, it makes solving the mystery of just what's going on a lot more entertaining.

Rurouni Kenshin: This is surprisingly considered a Mature anime according to Sentai Filmworks, but it's about a wandering samurai who can't escape his past but still keeps a cheery disposition about himself.

Heavens Memo Pad: A detective story based around a hyper genius girl named Alice and her Neet compatriots. The protagonist becomes Alice's assistant and we get thrown into a mystery involving a drug that makes people go nuts.

Death Parade: A series about a mysterious bar that allows two people to play games for their lives. I'm being purposely vague so you'll go and watch it, hoping you won't spoil it for yourself.

Black Lagoon: A modern day Japanese Businessman gets kidnapped by Pirates.  Hijinks ensue.

There's a lot more i could mention but those are the ones that are just floating around at the top of my head.

The ones I would recommend are Monster. I haven't personally seen it, but I have heard it's like a more mature version of Death Note. It has to do with a serial killer.

Another one I would recommend is Knights of Sidonia. If you liked Evangelion or Attack on Titan, you'll probably like this series as it has similar themes.

And last but not least, I would recommend Flowers of Evil. It's a series about a middle school student is blackmailed by another student. It deals with interesting themes like how we perceive others and ourselves.

Van Hellsing  Ultimate. Seen a SFM Clip of Flutterbat as Alucard from The Abridged Series. I then watched the Abridged series of the show..and started to get into the actual show itself. It's pretty good. I liked it for the "alternate Universe" of it of the Nazi Zombies and such.
