My Paper Pony Game

Hey fellow ponies!

 

I am developing a MLP RPG based on the Paper Mario series. I have been working on it for several months and looking for artists to help create the characters, HUD, concept art, and other 2D-related items (3D artists, sound and music composers are also helpful)!

I'm no artist, but I will definitely play the game once it's finished. I'm a huge Paper Mario fan and I wish somepony had come up with this before because this has a lot of potential! :)

Status update: I am working more on the battle system and it is coming along pretty well. It may take me to the end of this year to finish the battle system portion. Once it's done, I can start working on other aspects of the game.

 

Twilight will be the main character of the game and the other Mane 6, Spike, and a made-up unicorn character (who is part of the story) to be her partners. Each partner will have different abilities and strengths. I am still thinking about what their abilities and strengths will be, but below is what I am thinking:

 

  • Twilight - All round character that mainly uses magic attacks. She also has a normal book-smack attack (acts as her hammer). I feel that there should not be any variety of this ability since she doesn't do a lot of physical attacks.
  • Spike - Uses Twilight's book to look up (scan) enemies. Has normal-type attacks and uses his fire breath.
  • The unicorn - Uses a lot of different elemental magic abilities (alot like Lulu in FFX).
  • Rarity - Mainly uses increases defense and healing abilities. She'll have only one physical ability similar to Bow's in Paper Mario.
  • Applejack - Strong against high-defenced enemies on the ground. Has a lot of physical attacks and one ability against flying enemies: apple bucking.
  • Rainbow Dash - Strong against flying enemies. She can increase evasiveness. Her Sonic Rainboom will definitely be in the game.
  • Fluttershy - Acts almost like a summoner in Final Fantasy games: summon animal friends to attack enemies. Different animals to different things like Angel Bunny will steal items from enemies. I'm also thinking that one of her abilities will be THE STARE to paralyze enemies.
  • Pinkie Pie - Will have unique abilities. Has multi-bounce attack on enemies. What will her party cannon do? Deal damage, status effect or both?

If you have any good game design ideas, let me know. I am open for suggestions! Receiving help is much appreciated!

I might make a small investment, but all I have are business/financial and management skills. I am no artist, by any means, sorry.

I have made pretty good progress with the game and finished the HUD that is displayed at the top of the screen.

The assets shown are made from my own hoove and I feel pretty proud of myself!  ^_^ I'll still continue working on the game and will keep you up-to-date on the progress.  :)

Yes. It can display different numbers. All of the numbers on the HUD show what is being kept in the game and work as expected. In this example, the main character, Twilight, has 9 out of 15 health within game, so the HUD shows 9 / 15.

This might not be them, but if you can find it on google images its easy to try and tie it to the artist and link them and their work.

 

Yes. This is one of the artists that contributed to DeviantArt's MPP64 gallery, and this is the art style that this game will be based on. I'm getting a lot of inspiration from this page and trying to get in contact with the main artist, FinePrint-MLP. He is the pony that I give a lot of credit to.  :squee:

In fact, I've been really wanting a Paper Mario esque game for MLP, so it's really cool someone is actually making on. 

 

Have you tried looking on Deviant art? You might have more luck going where artist tends to hang around.

Status Update: I got in contact with Yoshi Greenwater and he is helping me with the character designs! We have come up with the OC pony that will be a party member and part of the story!

Right now, I am working on a sprite animation editor for my game engine that makes it easier to animate sprites (both tile-based and multi-sprite based). It will not be finished until next month, but it is going along well.

 

If you want to help with the art, models, story, testing, music, or other aspects of the game, let me know! I plan to reward those who contribute to the project!

Hey I would love to test it I am a big fan of the paper Mario series and I have seen yoshi greenwater she/he knows what they are doing and one hint you must have the curtains drawing animation or else not many paper Mario bronies would like it at all. The hard core players don't like the newer ones except for color spash ironically yet the way they anamite is important. It needs to be challenging and another must it MUST have puzzles.

Hey thanks! It will not be a while until I start getting testers to test the game, but I will keep you in mind when it happens.  :grin:

 

The curtain transition animation is something I am considering to add since I do want the game to be more like TTYD. That also includes the character animation. Also, I certainly do agree that the battles should be harder than the actual Paper Mario series. I am definitely adding puzzles and each partner will have his/her own overworld ability such as Applejack's buck.  :smug:

 

Now, the game is going to be shorter since, knowing fan-made game projects, I want this project to be completed. There are many, many things I would love to add, but it is more important to get the core mechanics and story first before I add any bells and whistles. If the game does become popular, I will certainly add a lot more in later versions.

 

What engine are you using? I only heard of Game Maker.

 

The engine is my own custom game engine, entirely from scratch (I know, I'm crazy). I could have used a well-known game engine like Unity, but I stuck to using my own and it allows me to learn the inner workings of a game engine. My custom game engine is a project that I was working on before I started this one and it has come a long way. I wanted to make a game using my game engine so, as a MLP fan, I decided to make this game.

 

Oh, for anypony who is wondering, it is only going to be on Windows (minimum Windows 7) with DirectX (sorry Mac/Linux users  :kindness: ).

Right now, I'm still working on the sprite animation editor (and music) for the game. I would like to hear your input on different game chapter ideas. For each chapter, Twilight and her party members will get what are called "keystones" at the end of each chapter. The areas mainly need to be around Ponyville. Here is what I have in mind for chapter/area ideas:
 

 

  • Prologue - Road to Canterlot

    Party members joining: The OC pony, Spike, and Rarity.

    This area is small and it is the road from Ponyville to Canterlot (the train and carriage are under maintenance). This is the tutorial area of the game that teaches you the mechanics of the game (some of the tutorial will be in the first battle against Trixie). There isn't a chapter-specific plot per say, but I do need some ideas on the boss (and even the middle boss) for this area.
     
  • Chapter 1 - Canyons

    Party members joining: Applejack

    This area will contain Sweet Apple Acres, the canyons, and the mines (will contain the diamond dogs). The plot will involve Applejack and the diamond dogs.
     
  • Chapter 2 - Cloudsdale

    Party members joining: Rainbow Dash (maybe Fluttershy as well)

    This area will mainly contain Cloudsdale. There definitely needs to be a chapter-specific plot for this one involving Rainbow Dash.
     
  • Chapter 3 - Swamp

    Party members joining: Fluttershy (maybe Pinkie Pie as well)

    This area is basically the swamp (one of the main bosses will be the hydra). The plot for this chapter will involve Fluttershy helping a creature.
     
  • Chapter 4 - Everfree Forest

    Party members joining: Pinkie Pie

    This area is Everfree Forest along with some type of ruins. The plot will involve Pinkie Pie and depressed ghosts (cheering them up for instance).
     
  • Chapter 5

    I haven't come up with a area idea for this chapter yet, maybe volcano? The plot has to involve changlings!
     
  • Chapter 6 - The final chapter

    I've got plans for this one. It involves an area outside of Equestria.

 



Let me know if you have any ideas for the chapters on this forum or on Discord.

This is prefect for a paper game but about a secrect meeting spot where the oc's of the game staff and beta players are in one spot like a inn or a house somthin like that probly in pony ville or clouds dale but that might not work with my oc Lol XD
