The matter of whether Sunset Shimmer returning to Equestrian has been theorized on and discussed/debated before, with reasonable points on both sides on why she should return or stay in the human world. One of which for the latter is claim that she considers her new home to be where her new (human) friends are.

 

But one single line that breaks that theory and gives evidence for where Sunny considers "home" to be is found in the deleted scenes of Friendship Games. Her one line - ""it just makes me wonder if there's...more for me (regarding magic and adventure) back HOME."

While, in the deleted scenes duet with SciTwi, she also refers to the human world as home, she says she still feels out of place there. "This town is home, this school is safe, but how can I be home, and still feel out of place?) of course she would consider Equestria as home. No matter if her friends live in an AU. While she adores her friends, she has spent significantly LESS time with them as she has living in Equestria as a pony, accustomed to the magic and creatures there.

 

But what do you guys think? Is Sunny's home where her hooves are, or where her homies are?

I would prefer for Sunny to stay in the human world. Sure, the new Sunny would have an easy time making friends with the Mane6, but those ponies aren't the same friends she made. Otheswise human Twi would've been attracted with human Flashy as pony Twi is or was

I want Sunset to return to Equestria for the S6 finale, to be part of the "Glimmy Squad".

Her going back would ruin every single thing she has built, become, and lived as alone in the human world.

 

Real people go through this. They move away from home, to a big city or another state/county/whatever. Get a job that takes 90% of there focus. Start a family that soon they value over there old one, and if and when they "go home" to raise said family, or moved for said job, they are initially happy. Then beyond depressed.

 

What you had, you can never have again. Everything in life is a one time moment. Every friend, every kiss, ever phone call, heck every cab ride, only happens once.

 

Her going home would be the single most ruinous thing to be done to the EQG universe. She NEEDS to stay where she is, she NEEDS to keep building, keep fighting and have her OWN life.

 

She also needs to hook up with Adagio...cough

I'd say at the end of the EQG franchise she should go back home. Her staying in the human world might have implications on the balance between the worlds to begin with, but I also think she'd ultimately be happier at home. Of course, this comes from a rabid SunLight shipper so anything getting her back with Twilight is a plus for me.

I really hope they salvage those deleted scenes. I am shocked they didn't use them in Legend of Everfree at the start, since it would have been the perfect time for Sunset to be wondering these things, especially right before a magical mystery begins to unfold, because it's exactly what she was hoping would happen.

 

As for Sunset going back to Equestria, it would probably be heartbreaking to just leave her new friends, they're probably the first friends she's ever actually had, so it doesn't look like anyone besides Princess Twilight and Celestia is waiting for her on the other side of the portal. They really need to let Sunset reconcile her differences with Celestia, though.

If the leaking magic is same as the comic book where Celestia was visiting that world with kind Sombra then she will have to go back. It will probably be a sappy heart breaking story where she has to accept returning to Equestria permently to fix dimensional barriers and save her human friends and their world.

 

After she goes back the final EG scene will be human girls trying to cope with shimmer being gone for ever with a end credit scenes where each human see the original human shimmer in passing in each of their lives only to chase after her and all of them run in to each other in front of the school just in time to see original shimmer walk away into the sunset. Only at that moment the 6 of them decide together to let her go without saying hi to her as they are unsure if this shimmer could really fill the hole in their heart pony shimmer left. With another short clip of human shimmer wondering who the 6 girls were that were following her while she was passing through town.

This is perhaps one of the only lingering remnants of Sunset's past that has yet to be resolved, and now is as good a time as any to finally address it. It would give not just her some closure and being able to move on, but the same can be given to Celestia. I don't know why the writers continue to avoid something fans have been wanting, but perhaps they are waiting for the right time or haven't figured it out yet.

 

That being said, I don't think she should return permanently. Instead, she could visit Equestria every now and then to catch up on anything she might have missed. Her home is now with her friends, her family, in the world of humans, so it makes sense that she spend most of her time there. Of course, this could all change if a human Sunset were to be thrown into the mix.

A movie about Human Shimmer going through the portal to acquire Equestrian magic straight from the source seems about the right time for Pony Shimmer to reconcile with Celestia.

That actually would make for an interesting premise, and would reaffirm what Twilight had often said about there two of the same person in the same place.
