gaming Favorite Video Game Lore

Video games have evolved so much in such a short timespan. What used to be a journey for high scores or simply beating the game with no context, has now become a canvas for telling intricate and massive stories or even full on lore that evolves over the course of several games. It is wonderful to see such a wonderful medium also have amazing stories to tell that can pull us into the world of the game.

When a game or game series has well crafted lore, one can get lost in the stories. We can discuss these stories with friends, fellow fans, come up with theories about parts of the lore and the stories and so on. Not only is that fun to do, but it is also something that helps us appreciate the game even more.

As you can see, I love it when a game or game series has well crafted lore within it. So we should discuss all of our favorites! What games or game series have your favorite lore attached to it?

One of my absolute favorites already is the Elder Scrolls series. The world of this series is so massive and the games contains so many details on the inner workings of it. Countless books and stories to find, artifacts and locations that weave it all together and people to give you more information on the world you are exploring. Such a wonderful world has been crafted and with all of the games being so well thought out for this world, it makes it a treat to just sit down and read a book or two in the game to learn more about all of it.

The Halo series also has some of the best lore in the FPS genre.

Hands down, all time favorite video game lore: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series of games. The games are almost a decade old, but even the vanilla games are still fun to play.

The games have cult following and a very active modding community, so much so there are basically 2 unofficial games (Lost Alpha and Call of Chernobyl).

It's a series you have to read up on the wiki for at least an hour to get a decent idea of the story and lore. The few videos out there on such barely scratch the surface.  It's a game that took inspiration from Roadside Picnic by Arkady Strugatsky

It's the game series I always come back to.

Fallout is my absolute favorite when it comes to lore. The atmospheric take on the world is really enjoyable to me. I love how underneath the coating of the basic survival and main story, the universe is just really somber and depressing. All the hidden stories and details makes me think.

I love Fallout Equestria and Project Horizons for the same reason; they're practically expertly written versions of the tone I feel whenever I'm wandering the wasteland instead of doing any missions.

Witcher has some very, very dank lore. And Emhyr var Emreis did absolutely nothing wrong.

I mean really: all he wants is his daughter back so he can pass the throne to someone competent and to stymie the plotting of some rather dangerous individuals in the Empire of Nilfgaard after breaking the curse put upon him by a sorcerer who usurped his father and exiled him from the capital as a hideous deformed wanderer. He did only what we all would have done: got the curse broke by Geralt and then fucking murdered everyone in a show of force so his legitemacy would be unquestioned and dangerous plotters and intrigues would not come to pass.

All hail that Golden Sun.

Obligatory Dark Souls mention ;)

I mean, in the first game you learn about all these godly figures through the opening and item descriptions alone and in the end you end up slaying them all, yet are ever wary of their stories if you pay attention. I find it to be wonderful stuff personally. :D

Shoutout to Metroid Prime as well, the scan entries are always a joy to read. :)

Despite how controversial the timeline has gotten thanks in large part to Nintendo releasing what they perceive as the official timeline, I've always enjoyed the myth and lore behind the Legend of Zelda series. Sure, there are plenty of holes that need to be filled in to help explain how certain events took place and shaped what was to befall the kingdom further down the road, but what is already there can be considered the stuff of well, legends.

I can think of two examples off the top of my head. The first is Mass Effect, which has an entire encyclopedia of lore and background information in the form of the Codex. None of it is necessary to play and understand the game (unlike Final Fantasy XIII), but by delving into the Codex, you learn interesting things about the different races, their various social and political workings and various other facts about this entire universe. Not to mention that even without the Codex, there's still more than a god bit of lore to sift through.

The second is, surprisingly enough, Paper Mario and The Thousand Year Door. It's a Mario game, so you're not expecting some grandiose world with well established lore... except it's there if you know where to look for it. There's a character in that game whose only purpose is to enrich the story by going into detail about things the origins of Rougeport, the Crystal Stars, the black chests, the histories of the dragons you encounter and much, much more.

Easily the Fallout Universe and Lore. I mean the game devs put a lot of effort into the lore of Fallout...from the terminals you find to the grim reality of the skeletons you come across in various poses and situations.

I follow a couple YouTubers like Shoddycast, who do lore based vids..it's just really cool watching and listening to those kinda vids.

I even use lore friendly mods, primarily. Aside from the pony mods in Fallout 4 I use....to which I've basically turned into Fallout: Equestria.

I also love the lore behind GTA...the random mysteries involved with it, the peyote plants, the character history/interations..etc..

Fluttershy's lover, she's my waifu. I'm in love and obsessed with her, she's given me shyabetes. *Hnnnng*

While I don't play a lot of video games, I have to admit that that the Pokemon franchise has some really interesting lore.

Like some of the Pokedex entries can be really interesting and even terrifying.

The Pokemon world is really vibrant with a rich history regarding its own series of deities and legendary pokemon and how they are involved with humanity.

Video game lore in general is pretty interesting to me, I could make the case for several games to be my favorite:

Fallout: The lore is well-written, makes sense with what is going on in the games, and the stories are just so fascinating. I really liked the Storyteller series. I mean the details of every story and every plot point is so well-written... I can't think of one way that the story could have been made better.

Overwatch (Won't play it myself) and League of Legends (DON'T play the game itself. The community is TERRIBLE...): Both are simply well executed, with each of the game's characters feeling like one piece of a larger picture. The characters (especially in League) are developed so well that each character feels unique even if they fit a similar achetype. The stories of both games for each character are usually around 7 or 8 minutes in length if you listen to lore videos on YouTube.

I like the Fallout world's lore.

One of my favorite pieces of lore from the game is what happened to the Divide in New Vegas' Lonesome Road DLC.

I won't spoil anything, but dang is it a tragic story.

The main Megaman Universe is surprisingly intricate especially once the X, Zero, and Legends series are involved
