The odd occasion where a cover and its original both seem uniquely good

I should clarify beforehand that I am typically a diehard rocker (at least, currently).  However, I was born in '94 and grew up listening to pop music from when I was 2 through 10 years old. So, I am one of the types who follow the "pop music was better in the late 90s and early 00s" belief.

Anyway, to the point:

I just listened to Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle" - then directly after, listened to Dove Cameron's cover.

I find both of them to be excellent.  Normally I see [pop] covers to be bad, or worse than their originals. But in this case I don't feel that way. Now I don't see the cover as better, of course, but just equally unique and good in its own way.

Does anyone else feel the same?

I've got a couple songs, that I much prefer the cover of actually....I mean, I'm not into Icona Pop nor, Rihanna all that much...but these covers of them are pretty fantastic in their own way.

I'd say Sabaton's cover of Metallica's For Whom The Bell Tolls is about as good as the original. It helps that they're different genres

I personally think that when people think a cover is better than the normal song it is a bad thing because it is placing the talents of an editor above the creator. That being said I don't have the art and actually love some songs more than their originals. My personal favorite cover would have to be pusher from clearwhich was covered by shawn wasabi.

Phenomenal topic. One song that comes to mind is Sound of Silence. I often vacillate between which version I like the most, and which one I consider the superior version

The first one that comes to my mind is "Heard It Through the Grapevine" which actually has THREE really neat versions.

Credence Clearwater Revival did a version too, but theirs is a lot like Marvin Gaye's.

@@Jeric, Holy crap! I can't believe I only just now listened to Disturbed's rendition of The Sound of Silence... That was absolutely amazing! I got chills listening to that.

I remembered another of my favorite examples:

Metallica - One:

And here is Korn's rendition:

Truth be told, I actually kind of like Korn's version more.

Granted, this version of the U2 classic includes the original guitarist The Edge, but it's still the best cover of the song I have ever heard. Right there next to the original. Matt Bellamy's voice sounds so much like Bono's did back in 1987.

I always thought the Simon and Garfunkel version had a more dreamlike quality. The version by Disturbed displays more of an anger at the heartlessness of modern society. While both are very good, I prefer the original.

Now here are my two examples.

"After the Gold Rush"

I honestly can never decide which I like better. Neil Young's is raw and powerful, but Prelude gave it something almost magical in their A Cappela cover.
