spoiler Is Sunset getting closer to appearing in FIM?

Without going too deep into spoiler territory, Equestria Girls' canonicity within FIM has now been set in stone.....

...... via flashback in the Season 7 finale.

To insist otherwise is futile. Now we can finally put that argument to rest.

With that in mind, there's been some talk about possible appearances by the new movie characters in later seasons. We still don't know if any seasons are planned past Season 8, so while I wouldn't mind having Tempest show up, I'll be very unhappy if they continue to leave Sunset out. As much as I liked Mirror Magic, pony Sunset didn't get to do enough in that short. She deserves at least one or two guest episodes in FIM itself before it ends.

You could argue that her presence would be too foreign or unfamiliar for anyone who hasn't seen the EQG movies, but the same could also be said about the MLP movie characters. Both Sunset and Tempest are on equal footing.

I hope there comes a threat that all the characters need to go to their original dimension in order to survive. S8? Hopefully. :twi:

That would be cool if Sunset got to appear in the main show. I really do hope they show more ponies in EQG, too. I gave up hope on the chance of her being in the show, because I always thought they were trying to keep EQG as a separate franchise. Now that it has basically been confirmed as canon in the main show and that Sunset did go to Equestria for about a minute in Mirror Magic, I think that means we might see her in the show one day.

This might be true, because I've seen a few people on this site who haven't touched any of the EQG movies or shorts, but then it'll just encourage them to watch them just so they can understand what is happening in the main show.

A Sunset cameo is really all that I am asking for; even if just a short appearance. Considering her evolution during the EqG series & all as well as her popularity, they could at least give her that much. Though...I would be lying if I didn't have an epic battle against a foe like Grogar in the deserted, haunted streets of Tambelon with the Elements, Pillars, Starlight, Sunburst, Tempest, and even Sunset battling to save the world.

I can dream. :D

Doubt that'll see any of those characters because of the voices behind them, which are big shot celebs. We could see minor pony movie ones like Verko, Spring Rain, or Glitter Drops; since they don't have that restriction

Even if it's just a small appearance, the appearance is overdue. The lack of references to EQG within FiM has always puzzled me. While I get that Hasbro wants each one to have its own distinct flavor, the two universes are certainly connected and it's possible to travel between them. Why not let Sunset stay in Ponyville for a while, kinda like how Starlight got to stay in the EQG world for a little while.

Personally, I don’t want to see that happen. I think Sunset belongs in EQG and not in FiM.

Maybe that’s just because I’m paranoid that Sunset will take over leadership of the Mane Six.

It’s a possibility.

Oh, be quiet, Twilight.

Based on what I heard at conventions, it's not Hasbro that's actively looking for celebs to do voice work on any MLP projects, but it's the other way around. They've had a lot of big actors come to them expressing how much they want to be part of the show. Liev Schreiber and Zoe Saldana were already fans, so of course it'd be easy to get them on board. And we just got William Shatner for Season 7. If they can get HIM to be Grand Pear, it shouldn't be hard getting the celebs from the movie to reprise their roles.

And that is all the more reason to give Sunset some guest appearances. If Tempest, Grubber, Skystar or the pirates get into FIM first, and Sunset's still kept out, it'll just create a big shitstorm in the fandom.

I'd be perfectly fine with Sunset making a guest appearance in the main FIM series, maybe something like once a season we can get an episode with her where she comes back from the mirror world to hang out with Twilight/Starlight, or do something else. People would argue that they shouldn't have to watch EQG to understand an episode of FIM, but I really don't think it'd be very hard to do a quick re-introduction of her character for those who don't know her already, and most fans have already probably seen the EQG series at least once. I'd be fine with some of the movie characters appearing in the show as well for the same reasons.

I definitely don't want her becoming a permanent cast member of FIM though, a guest appearance every season or so is fine, but I think her home and role is in the EQG world and series, and that's where she should stay for the most part.

Still, considering how accessible Hasbro wants to keep the series, I won't be too surprised if EQG/Movie stuff only continues to get small references and nods.

It's not impossible, but very unlikely, and if any of those characters appears in the show, don't expect them doing so frequently. But I'd love some call back to the movie, partly to shut those neigh sayers who proclaim the movie isn't canon :dash:

The main obstacle with Sunny appearing in the show is mainly "what plot could force Sunset Shimmer to return to Equestria?" I see Sunny appearing in FIM far more possible than any of the celeb voiced movie characters :dash:

Sunset still has yet to reconcile with Celestia. That's more than compelling enough for her to jump through the portal again. Because if something terrible were to happen- like Celestia contracting a life-threatening disease, or going missing- Sunset would only be burdened with the regret of having neglected her for the rest of her life. Nobody wants to experience that. Look at Grand Pear. He made the mistake of writing off his own daughter, and now that she's passed away, he's kicking himself in the ass for it.

Also, it's not just Celestia that Sunset left behind, but her family, and possibly even friends that were close to her until she decided to go bad. They had to have been some kind of anchor for her conscience, since she knew she was making a mistake and kept her journal with her. In essence, she has all these loose ends that need to be tied, and not coming back to visit is only creating another friendship problem; plenty of good material for a two-parter right there.

  • 2 weeks later...

I can't stress enough just how much I want to see Sunset make a meaningful visit to Equestria, simply because the potential is not only near-endless but is the kind you really can't get anywhere else. Just imagine how it would feel for Sunset to be back on her hooves after so long, revisiting her old unicorn magic and Princess Celestia, among other things... I swear, them never doing anything with this would hands-down be the single biggest waste of potential in all of G4. Even a one-shot appearance would be enough for me.

But it always sucks to think about because there's just too much intruding with them doing this. Because the main show seems to either be unwilling or not able to directly reference anything about EqG (the Sirens in "Shadow Play" don't count because their appearance would've made just as much sense in-context if Rainbow Rocks never existed). Not to mention the mere fact they haven't done this by now; it took us too long to even get to the point "Mirror Magic" did, and that better not be the last time we see pony Sunset.

This is no doubt because they don't want to alienate people who don't follow EqG, which is to an extent understandable. And beyond that, even an EqG installment doing this has the issue of that seemingly having its own restrictions on how much it can directly interact with Equestria; even the first film only spent so long in there. But there is some fantastic stuff simply BEGGING to be explored, and I feel they outright need to find a way to do this without fully breaking the boundaries. Or just go all out if they have to and definitively bring up the human world in the main show; screw the haters. Exactly how willing would the crew have to be for that to happen though?

I don't know, I just really, really want to see this happen - more than anything else in G4, because I outright adore her character's background and want to see it be given the all-out treatment it deserves. But every time I do think about it, the more I fear they won't for the aforementioned reasons, and I would absolute hate to see all that get completely squandered. Someone please reassure me on this if they can, though.

I think if they really wanted to dodge EQG altogther, they'd have given the Pillars a more generic looking monster to fight like a dragon, or something else that didn't require as much time and resources to animate. The Sirens were still beaten the same way Twilight described it in Rainbow Rocks, and Shadow Play even had them turning ponies on each other to absorb magic into their gems. That's way too specific for it to just be an easter egg.

I like Sunset quite a bit, and she is probably the one character that keeps me watching the EqG related shorts and what have you. Even if its a small cameo in some sort of non consequential episode I would be fine. I would definitely think a decent friendship based episode would involve Sunny and Tia as Twilight helps Sunset deal with finally getting the courage to speak with Celestia and seek absolution ... something that Sunset has definitely earned. Another decent idea would involve a Starlight, Twilight, Sunset Episode.

Sunset may go to Equestria, but it will not be in the show. Sunset will never appear in the show. She is just not a show character. She is an EQG character. Also keep in mind that a huge majority of the fanbase (including me) still hate EQG.

Those were all one-offs, because (unless they took a major salary cut) all of those stars are expensive. I suspect Emily Blunt's paycheck would dwarf the entire main cast's combined, so even if she did take less money for a role on this show, it'd still be an expensive character to bring back. In other words: depends very much on how long the show lasts. Two or three seasons from now, maybe we could get a cameo.

As for Sunset: I think the context issue is more pronounced with her, because the Movie was a big event which will probably be seen by most of the target audience on TV reruns or on home media if not in theatres, whereas I'm not as convinced that Equestria Girls is widely known through that audience. There's even more likely to be a difference among older viewers who might be more discerning. And Hasbro seems weirdly interested in keeping the brands separate at this point, which is evidenced by how Equestria has had absolutely no references in recent Equestria Girls content.

But I can still dream, because I would be pretty happy to see Sunset in the show.

Hope not. I will purposefully ignore EQG for as long as I possibly can, and then still barely give it glassy-eyed acknowledgment even after that. What I feel is not what I would describe as hate, because I don’t feel anger anymore, or even annoyance right when it’s in my face. I’ve even watched a couple shorts on PURPOSE. But I literally cannot stomach the entire spinoff’s conception in direct connection with the main series.

The characters and story aren’t a factor for me. They still created a portal in which the adult equestrian heroes of ponyland get turned into highschool aged magical girls. And their immortal alicorn rulers are principles. And they seem to be stuck perpetually in their senior year (Sunset won the fall formal three years in a row). I will never like this concept. It’s just not my cup of tea at all.

If others like it, good for them. Please just keep it separate so people that enjoy just the magic horses can just have their magic horses.

Still haven’t seen the finale, but if the show mentioned Starswirl banishing evil sirens to another world, then in my brain, Starswirl banished evil sirens to another world, the end. Not, “Starswirl banished evil sirens to another world where they turned into evil teenaged pop divas that fed on the collective angst of the adolescent population of a high school.”

No.

RELEVANT EDIT: I do want Grogar please.

No, she isn't.

Sunset showing up would imply them talking about the human world. They won't do that, the Sirens are the best way they can make EQG canon because it still looks like something straight out of the FIMverse.

Even then, that had minimal involvement and it seems any given EqG installment never spends any more than 10% of its runtime in Equestria. Even the first film only spent so long there.

Then again, if handled expertly, maybe that's all they'd need.

I just wasn't sure if you meant this last batch or the prior batch. To be honest, how they are rolling out Equestria Girls stuff these days, plus the leaks ... I honestly get confused on what is new in that particular part of the IP

... and the upcoming plans on the YouTube series may mean those context concerns you raised could still be valid.
