gaming Nintendo and online.

Virtually nothing.

I am not sure Nintendo even knows what online is sometimes. Where their competitors embrace online gaming Nintendo seems determined to believe it is just some passing fad.

Because Multiplayer in the same room is fading away and Nintendo wants to keep it alive. That's what I believe. As long as the game is fun, it's not about having the best graphics and strongest hardware. Games are supposed to be fun for everyone. That's why they've been in the video game business for far longer than Sony and Microsoft.

I agree with what @SwitchGuy2018 said

local is going away more and more on the PS4 and XBONE, as they only focus on the online multiplayer, because apparently no one plays anymore multiplayer in their own room.

Nintendo, while also having online games (Splatoon says hello) they keep their focus on the actual interaction with family and friends in real life and i love that.

I love playing online, but playing with your best friend in the same room just can't be topped.

What does any of that have to do with their competence in online gaming though? Going online does not mean you cannot play together in the same room. It would not be that big a deal to have it set up where you can play in the comfort of your own home with your family and friends when possible, but for those who don't have that luxury they can go online and search for people to play. It is about options and choice, and frankly, Nintendo is more concerned with telling people what they should like instead of asking them and capitalizing on it. But that has always been Nintendo, moving at their own pace and seeing the world only through their single vision. Obviously it works for them since they continue to do well, and have shown little interest in changing how they operate overall until only very recently, and even now even though fans are excited, critics are just wondering if Nintendo will even take it seriously.

In terms of online, Nintendo's spectrum isn't as wide as Sony or Microsoft. I still think they have some pretty good services, even though they're a bit underwhelming sometimes.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.

Nintendo have often been reluctant when it comes to keeping up with the trends that the video game industry experiences. They were the last of the big three to fully embrace online gaming, the last to rely on HD, and the last to start relying on mobile gaming. It's something they are likely to continue doing on account of wanting to stick with their tradition and embracing what once worked yet no longer does.

How are they still successful, then?

All I have to say is friend codes. I can’t speak for how it is on the Switch, but on the Wii U it seemed like a hassle to add friends. Why can’t I just send a friend request instead of having to input a friend code to add someone? I just don’t think there up to par with gamers expectations of what online should be.

That's a sweet sentiment for people who have the ability to play with other people face-to-face, but it's commonly joked in reviews of multiplayer games "how cute, like you have friends" for a reason. Many of the people who would want to play with me live far away from me; I would love to play with them face-to-face, but it'd be a hassle to get them to come over here and play me, and that's the problem.

You can keep multiplayer in the same room alive while allowing better online support.

Also, having the best graphics and the strongest hardware isn't the highest priority, I agree, but having those things certainly helps to enhance the experience, and writing them off entirely is as bull-headed as suggesting that they're the only thing important about a game. It lowers my enjoyment of a game when the framerate dips, because it eats my inputs and makes it harder to play the game. If I can't see what I'm doing in a game, what's the point in playing? There's no sense in denying something that could make the game better just because "ugh, other companies have sacrificed fun". Being able to see a lush environment with gorgeous, stunning visuals can add to the fun, not take away from it.

Super Mario Odyssey actually embodies this rather nicely. It's gorgeous, large, and fun to play. Plus, it does have an online multiplayer mode in Balloon World. If they just found creative ways to implement these tools rather than rejecting them entirely, Nintendo would not only be a great gaming company, but it'd exceed far beyond what other gaming companies have ever done before. Nintendo is intentionally handicapping itself from unlocking even greater potential than it has.

Because their games are much loved by kids AND adults, not just the "teen" demographic. That's one major reason!

Actually, the Wii U was great in this particular aspect because they started the Nintendo Network with it where you had a Nintendo Network ID (username) instead of a Friend Code, and people could add you with that username.

The Switch, though... The Switch has pathetically gone back to Friend Codes. The system is a lot more sophisticated than the Wii/DS/3DS system of Friend Codes and you are able to add people you know on other devices without their FC, as well as people you have played with in some games. So that's nice, but... Why in the heck did Nintendo retread back to Friend Codes? It's such a massive embarrassment. Their paid online system better go back to usernames.

Agreed. Don't know why people make these excuses for Nintendo. There's no reason we can't have both a solid local multiplayer and online system.

Unfortunately, even though they still refuse to take the online as serious as their competitors they are making the very disgusting move of making people pay for it. But don't worry - they'll throw in NES and SNES games that you have played five billion times before as a benefit! Totally makes up for everything! /sarcasm

And also the games are actually worth investing your time into.

on topic, though. I honestly dont care if nintendo doesnt want to do online multiplayer. Frankly, im honestly getting sick of the 45 million cod multiplayers cropping up every five minutes for a good old fun for the whole family local multiplayer.
