High school prom

What is it like? What is the minimum amount of money I have to spend? What if I go there with just some friends and not a date? Is there a professional DJ or is it possible for me to do it? I don't think I'd ever find a date unless a miracle happens so IDK what to do, I don't want to miss out but I also don't want to be alone and stuff.

Ah yes, prom. I had already foreseen that I would have the same problems you're having now years before the prom even began for my school.......and so I never went ahaha

But see you actually WANT to go...hmmmm.....well I can still give you advice because I ended up going to a mini one and that's pretty much the same thing...

Anyway.....just hang out with your friends, this is 2018, having a "date" is old school. I highly highly doubt that you'll be lonely, just talk your friends into doing the same thing. Most people I know did dress kinda....fancy, so expect to wear something nice but I wouldn't recommend busting the bank for it, it's only a prom (also depends on how important the prom is to you, I'm kinda ignorant soooo). The thing I went to had a DJ, they usually take requests sometimes so there's that.

Yea that's really it.

I never went to prom when I was in high school, but I really don't think I missed out on anything. I'd imagine it would have been like the middle school dances I've been to, only more formal and not having any basketballs and the caricature artist. In short, it sounded like it would be horrible for me.

If you do go, I hear it's better to go without a date since you'd be more free to mingle and there would be less pressure on you.

If you already have an outfit you think would be suitable, wear that. If you don't have an outfit and you want to go cheap, I'd say ask a parent, sibling, etc if you could borrow an outfit for the night. You may also be able to find an outfit at a thrift store. I don't know how much your school is charging for prom tickets but I hear they usually cost $70 to $100. They may have dinner included with the ticket, but I don't know what your school does. If it isn't, just go to a cheaper place before you go to prom. DON'T GET A LIMO!

I assume most schools usually have a professional DJ.

I never went to my high school prom. Getting dressed up, dancing, and paying lots of money are three things I don't have much interest in

But if you do want to go, just go with your friends! I hear it's a lot more fun that way since you have a bunch of people you know you can hang out with comfortably.

I didn't intend on going but since I was the head of prom committee for the decor and such.. I got a free pass, so I want. Nothing typical that has happened but it was decent.

I've always been kind of mystified at the weird place prom has in American schools. Here in the Netherlands there's an end of year party, but it's really no different from other parties throughout the year.

I just finished 10th grade, and the only prom my high school has is for the seniors near the end of the year.

I probably won't go to Prom 2 years from now, since I'm super shy near girls so I doubt I'll get my shit together and ask someone to take.

I don't even have the guts to ask a girl to the homecoming dance without getting anxious and paranoid of getting rejected at the last second.

I'm not sure if UK high school prom's are the same as Prom's in America but I went to my prom and it was great! I remember planning to go about my anti-social ways back then and simply sit there for most of it talking to friends though this changed quite quickly and I remember being pulled up by a friend to dance. It was of course awkward at first until you noticed that pretty much no one cares if your dancing sucks or such xD Most people are not even paying attention to you when dancing.

Prom I'd say was actually one of the best nights of my life. Did a bunch of dancing, took lots of pictures with friends, and watched our teachers get drunk. One of my fondest memories of Prom was when everyone was sucking helium out of the balloons that were around just to make their voice sound funny. I even remember one of the science teachers saying we shouldn't do that but in about 5 minutes, he was doing it as well xD. Another fond memory was watching my teachers ride this insane bike that my friend brought to prom.. while they pretty much were drunk. (Have a look if you want: https://vimeo.com/236809356)

Anyway! To answer ya questions :please:

  • I just went with a couple of my friends instead of taking a date and basically no one cares from what I experienced, most people at my Prom didn't even bring dates.
  • The only things I had to buy was my suit, aside from that I don't remember spending any money but you can buy some to buy drinks and food (Or at least we had too)
  • We had a professional DJ but I remember people going up to see him and helping him play and pick out music

I'd advise you go, it may be one of the best nights of your life! Brings some friends and just have fun, that's what it's all about.

Didn't go to prom because it just wasn't for me. My advice: go if you wanna but if not don't sweat it. It really is not as big of a deal as some grownups like to make it out to be.
