If you went to Equestria do you think you would speak the same language?

If you went to Equestria one day, do you think you would find yourself in a place where nobody speaks what you speak?

I do, but I think twilight could probably whip up a spell to fix that pretty quick.

Thoughts?

Pretty sure Equestrian is just English but with a few words changed here and there. At least, that is my headcanon for the show. It could just be that they are all neighing

I've always wondered what they were all thinking the day that Discord was driving Twilight bonkers because he had a day with her friends she missed out on. That moment when he sarcastically hugged her and while making horse noises. I couldn't help but wonder if that was taken as highly offensive, or if she just had no idea what he was doing. I guess you could even go with a "Planet of the Apes" type of thing, Equestria is actually Earth, humans were wiped out, horses became the dominant sentient species. But those noises are still known as an obsolete form of primitive communication, like when humans grunt pretending they're cave-people.

There were some older episodes where they showed Equestrian writing, or at least older Equestrian to use a different alphabet, but that seems to be more or less retconned. Can't remember the last time they showed Equestrian literature but it appears to be mostly scribbles or Latin alphabet.

Otherwise, I think they probably speak English with a handful of word swaps here and there. Convocation of the Creatures mentions a dead language called "Olde Equestrianne" that used to be spoken in Canterlot, for what that's worth.

The only language I've heard them use is English. I suspect if you traveled to Equestria, you would automatically be tuned into their language. I also suspect you would be converted to pony form. I'm not sure how I'd feel about that, but I'd go with the flow.

I assume some ponies also speak French (or "fancy", as Applejack called it :mlp_smug:). Apple Bloom did that as a result of her cutie pox, and Rarity uses a few words here and there.

I think that they speak Ponish, however I think it has been translated to English through the show so we as an audience can understand what they're saying :P

In the case though that I was transported to Equestria, I imagine I wouldn't understand a single thing the ponies would be saying, as I wouldn't be hearing them through the show speaking English, I would be hearing them right next to me speaking in whatever Ponish sounds like :o But, I can guarantee that Twilight probably has some sorta spell of some kind that she could cast that would make it so I could understand what everypony would be saying once they all realize that I don't speak in Ponish like they do.

I didn't see Twi, Sunny, nor Starlight having trouble understanding humans :dash:. Definitely the same language :orly:

Kinda going with the "magic portal" on this one. "Gift of the TARDIS" if you will. If crossing dimensions can automatically alter your body to suit your new surroundings, then I'm pretty sure it could also reprogram your brain to deal with the language barrier.

Everypony being afraid of me based on appearance would be beyond heartbreaking. I'd rather be shapeshifted than have to deal with causing some kind of "alien invader" panic. Though Lyra might be a bit disappointed at missing the chance to see something with opposable thumbs.

Probably, supposing that Ponish is actually the same language than English. if not, it's always possible to learn Ponish gradually. I also read fanfictions were Twilight uses language spells with strangers.

Plot twist: The ponies are actually speaking Rigelllian which, by astonishing coincidence, is exactly the same as English :P

I just assumed/imagined that all shows just use english or whatever real life earth language as default not because it's the official language of any fantasy world that has no real setting on human earth itself but because we couldn't understand what they say if they spoke in their own language. Is just that it gets to us already translated to tell the story. Kinda like Lord of the Rings which canonically is a translation of the "original" sources.

So if we take off that filter they would speak in a completely foreign language. And it would be cool if they all had a "universal" language and a specific one for every species outside ponies.

That's what seeing translated cartoons and shows your whole life does to you.

We watch a cartoon about them which is obviously in English but if they were real in another universe they probably speak a totally different language. And yeah, Twilight could probably make up a spell that would allow you to communicate.
