We need a SUPER BONE!

My dog, a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Sam, has a chewing problem. He usually leaves the furniture and plastic-ware alone if he has something else to chew on, but he often chews through his toys by the end of the day.

 

His breed has three major traits:

Endless hunger

A constant urge to chew things

A massive supply of energy

 

He's a good boy that loves people, but he just keeps on chewing through all his toys! We bought a "Jumbo Bone" that was rated to last most dogs at least three months. He chewed through the $50 bone in less than an hour!

 

Does anypony know a good brand of dog bone that he won't be able to chew through easily? My family has tried everything, but nothing has worked so far. Help me Obi wan kenobi, you're my only hope!

Have you tried bone shaped concrete and steel?

 

Seriously though, everyone time he chews the wrong thing, spray him with water and say "no" or something similar. If he likes the water/doesn't care then try doing something he doesn't like instead like a flick on the nose etc.

The issue is that if you do things like that, he doesn't put two and two together. If I flick him on the nose or spray him with water, all it will do is make him think I'm a violent person. Plus, one of my cousins full-on hit him when he jumped on her, and he didn't react to it at all. He's a tough puppy!

 

 

Besides, we're just looking for a bone that he won't chew through in a day.

Wrong, he *will* put two and two together. It's super basic operant conditioning and it's been used by trainers for ages. Your not trying to hurt him your trying to irritate him. You pair the bad chewing with an unfavorable stimuli and he will learn to not chew on things he isn't suppose to. It will work and I know it will because it is evolutionary prudent him to do so. You just have to be consistent. Edited by Bohtty

Sadly i don't :( Have you tried getting him other things to chew on that he can't actually consume but are still safe?

 

We tried a block of oak a few weeks ago, and he splintered that as well. We've resorted to a heavy plastic wheelchuck meant for holding Semi trucks in place, and he chewed through that too.

 

KILL HIM!

 

I don't know... give him a rock. That'll keep him busy. :3

I recommend giving him brains to curb his hunger. Your's may do. I could taste test them for you if you'd like.

No thanks, I already know that my brain tastes like Skrillex. And he's not a zombie, he's a Lion Hunter.

If this "jumbo bone" wasn't a cow bone, then get a cow bone. Should last awhile.

I can neither confirm nor deny myself being the cause of electrical related malfunctions. Anyways, you wouldn't happen to have a jar of replacement magic smoke would you?

Tried it. It lasted the longest time (three weeks) but it eventually broke and we had to take it away before he choked on one of the splinters.

I don't think you're gonna find anything else then. Unless you have an old basket ball lying around, but he may eat the bits he will inevitably chew off.
