general media Is Disney TOO big?

I don't care how big it gets as long as it doesn't turn into verizon or comcast. That's when companies get evil, when they're powerful enough to pass laws that benefit them at the expense of everyone else.

They already do that and have for decades. The future of Public Domain is sealed for as long as Disney exists, or a VERY anti-capitalist congress happens to be in power the year it comes time to extend copyright for the 2nd... 3rd... whateverth time.

I'm aware of the public domain issue. I guess I'm just not as offended by it as verizon being able to off net neutrality

They both involve legalizing ways to steal from the public. As scary as the NN thing is, the reason companies are doing this is most likely about anti-competition rather than a 1984 scenario. "Yes, this news site will only be available on PS4."

I wish Disney would just go back to making hand drawn cartoon animation and not be so big. I don't like mega-corporations.

I don't think anyone is going back to hand drawn any time soon. But I do agree that mega corps need to die

Yes, Disney is way too big. When a company gets that big they control too many things, which is never good. They influence business, law and economic development, usually at the expense of others who don’t have the power to fight against them. Before long they’ll have a monopoly over film production, distribution and a good chunk of tourism and they’ll have the clout to make it legal.

Because of Disney, Mattel had to shelve its Barbie film adaptation of Sleeping Beauty. Even though the story rights are public domain, Disney simply didn’t want anyone else to use them and guess who won that argument? That’s just one of many examples of corruption of power and influence. Disney was always at its best when it was smaller and more interested in the art it created and preserving the legacy that Walt set forth when he built the company. If Walt were still around today I’m sure he’d like the bottomless resources now at the disposal of the company and the creative freedom they’d afford, but he would use them far more honorably than the soulless bureaucrats in charge of it now.

Disney is like the MCP from TRON. It keeps getting smarter and smarter, until TRON came along and wiped out the MCP, and Flynn saved ENCOM, and made it into a free and open system for the Users. Let us pray that Disney doesn't meet the same fate.

The only way they'll get so big and crush :sealed:everyone (literally) is if they buy GM.  By that they'll put Mickey Mouse in front of the :mellow:Chevy logo and the trucks play Disney's magic music:mustache:

They were already too big before the mergers. As some have stated, they've been getting on other's cases for using fairy tales for their stories despite those being public domain.

Wouldn't mind if they broke off Lucasfilm/FOX, as I think those two have suffered a lot from their respective mergers, unlike Pixar/Marvel which seems to have benefited from it

From what I hear, this also screwed Mattel's Monster High/Ever After High toylines as well. Because Disney were annoyed with the existence of EAH(despite all the related characters being public domain) and cut their initial Disney Princess toyline with Mattel and moved to Hasbro instead, which cost Mattel a lot of their revenue
