There are actually shippers that become so dedicated to their pairing that they are willing to send death threats to authors and writers, hoping that if they scare them enough that they will make their pairing become canon. 

 

That is just flat out insanity! If you are willing to go to that extreme just so 2 fictional characters (who are not real at all) will hook up, then there is something wrong with you, and you should be put in a mental hospital.

 

So in the end, fictional characters are not real. So getting that obsessive over a fictional pairing is very pointless.

I don't like the Extreme Shippers who scream "Die For Our Ship" (as TV Tropes calls it) and hate on characters strictly because the character they hate officially got paired up with the character they wanted to ship with someone else. That's like extreme people Big Mac and Cheerilee Shippers wanting Sugar Belle to suffer just because she officially got with Big Mac over Cheerilee. They tend to act so immature thinking their one true pairing (OTP) is the only acceptable pairing and anything else is a punch in the face.

I myself have an open mind, and as long as the characters are happy, I'd be happy for them, even if it's not my OTP.

So make good by doing what you're already doing. Make shipping a fun thing for others instead of worrying about the rotten apples of the bunch!

And for the death threat stuff... a mental institution is overkill. Counselling? Probably. But not a place for people with legitimate concerns. Most shippers like this make really baseless threats without any idea where the author/director lives, and some even move on instead of always hating

If they’re being legit and actually make an attempt to do such a thing as in actually try to harm someone in real life? Or actually cause someone to take their life or something? Yes. Because they’re actually dangerous and locking them up would be best for everyone. If they’re just talking shit on the internet? No. Because they aren’t being an actual legitimate threat. They’re just being pathetic.Get their asses some therapy. Yeah that's just pure ignorance. The death of characters who have a strong romantic pairing have long led to visceral fan reactions over the decades. From Melanie Hamilton to Derek Sheppard. I'm not even going to pretend to believe that you won't have to rely on Google to learn the context. The attachment that fans make over a character's love life is chemical, psychological, and biological. It has nothing to do with a blasted white whale of the modern internet. People are people when it comes to a love for .... well ... love. I mean, I got a death threat on MLPF from a user who was the opposite of a fan of social justice, so yeah ... no. Crazy has no political home. 

 

As far as those that do stupid things, the mental illness comes BEFORE the unhealthy attachment. So the title as a question phrased wrongly. Perhaps, it should be why are there so many crazy people?

I hadn't heard of any shipping related death threats. Shipping is just good clean fun, from where I sit. Right now I'm shipping Jenny and Vega. It's a nice pairing. Kim Possible and Shego is one of my favorites, as well.

People who are legitimately that obsessed with a shipping to the point where they'd send people death threats over not getting their way are an extreme minority. It has to do with extreme escapism, and most people aren't escapists to that degree. Crazy comes in all different shapes and sizes, it is not just relegated to one side of...anything, honestly.

Exactly. There’s also the fact that from the experiences I’ve had in multiple fandoms, the people like that, are pretty much completely ignored by everyone else in the fandom. The fandoms I’ve been in that have those issues do not tolerate that behavior most of the time. If they aren’t being ignored they’re getting called out for their shitty behavior. And are considered the toxic half of the fandom that should not be interacted with too often. They give the fandoms a bad name.

I think I'm okay. My favorite ships happen to be for shows no longer in production. I couldn't force anyone to make a ship canon no matter what I said, threatened, or begged.

I actually only read the part about shipping on that article, and didn't read the other stuff on it. But anyway, I edited my post and put a warning on it.
