In what way do you break brony stereotypes?

First of all I don't call myself a brony. I like the show, the ponies and talking to people but I don't consider it my identity.

Beside that I dunno. I can't really name any stereotypes now.

Just call me Nori.

I am technically an x anti-brony so if I may give my thoughts and reasonings before I actually joined the fandom...

Even tho I enjoyed mlp in season 1, I was fearful to join the fandom. So much so I even denied my interest in the show.

I feared and despised the fandom do to it's known intolerance and inconsiderate behavior.

aka "please hide your clop from the mainstream" "haters gonna hate, rule 34, get over it"

Not to mention that the bad part of the fandom spoke, and speaks louder than the good.

So I knew about those that harassed girls (and little girls)

Claimed the show as theirs (for older men vs little girls) so complained when merch was not marketed for them

and those that even stoked girls while talking about rape like it's a fun game!

I was terrified, even when I recently tried to join the fandom

Seeing comments like "girls can't be BROnies, because they aren't bros" and "girls can't be friends with dudes" "girls are only good for sex, cooking, and cleaning" drove me away and led me to believe they were the brony community, a bunch of sexist pigs

After joining the community however, I realized that those monsters are simply a smaller portion of the fandom. They just speak so loud it's hard to see the good side of the fandom.

Altho it has been brought to my attention that the other fandom communities are finally becoming more respectful and understanding. Where mature content does seem to be separating from common fan art vs mixed together.

Anyway

For me I guess I break the stereotypes I have seen by being an x anti-brony

altho now i'd say am am anti-shameful-brony :/

Still weary about calling myself a brony due to the inconsiderate jerk part of the fandom are much louder, and I do not wish to be associated with those things...

__________

Sorry for the long post. I just have a lot on my mind about this subject matter.

I would like to thank a majority of this forum for helping me see the good side of the fandom! <3

If I may ask you to try to avoid using faggot as an insult... please

Personally I am technically a "faggot" so is upsetting when people act like being gay is an insult

...I'm sure you didn't mean it like that, but wanted to let you know

My deepest apologis. I will refrain from making use of that word and just so you know, I never meant that when I actually said it but again I'm sorry.

From my experience, I'd say that the most usual brony-stereotype is that we are silly and immature manchildren. I break that stereotype on daily basis by being a very humorless and boring person.

I am sure I reinforce and personify the stereotype in almost every conceivable way. *bursts into somewhat facetious laughter*

I deviate from the stereotype in three ways, though:

1.) I don't currently wear any MLP items (though I am trying to change that; aesthetical reconfigurations are difficult)

2.) I am not obsessed with the show or the MLP universe.

3.) I don't discuss the show or bronydom at every opportunity, appropriate or not. At most I'd be a casual ambassador of bronydom with my attire, like I am with furrydom.

  • 4 months later...

-well i grew up in a very religious conservative farm family in Iowa. living on a farm when i was 6 i learned how to drive very large equipment and worked with my dad a lot doing chores and 'manly stuff like that' that i still do today. I love shooting guns, i own an ak and m4 plus many air soft guns. i participate in full on hard core air soft ops all over this state and ones around us. my hobbys include wood working, machining, welding, and working on anything that has an engine in it ( i love getting my hand dirty).

-as far as personality things go, while i am a big fan of the show i dont push it onto others as in,

-i dont go around trying to get people to like the show. i only talk about it if someone askes me about it.

-i know that alot of people assume that we all look at "adult content material'" about the show, but as i have explained to them i dont and the majority of us don't either. most of us cringe at the sight of that kind of stuff.

-I dont ware mlp stuff out and about, the only thing i do occasionally use a lanyard that has the word brony in black with a gray background thats not very noticeable.

-Im not a lazy fat guy that sits on a couch in my parents basement with no future, im currently presuing a degree in engineering at a big university, in fact i have a midterm today.

I don't know if i break any stereotypes i haven't really changed a lot through the years, if you've known me since i start high school you wouldn't expect me to be a brony but when you find out it's simply like, "oh... another thing i don't get he's into... i'm to used to this sh**"

I guess to sum up i don't fall into these stereotypes...

I don't kick and scream when someone doesn't like something i do.

I'm not fat

I don't shove MLP down anyone's throat

I make fun of who i am what i'm a fan of and the fandom i'm part of and i don't hesitate to do it

I'm try to grow a beard but I've only got chops so i guess i don't exactly fall into neck beard territory

Even though i wear pony merch i don't wear bright pink shirts with "My little pony" on them and i don't have a fedora... yet

I'm not gay but i'm not about to shy away from telling them their half right.

I'm not a kiddy fiddler -.- (Who do you get pedophile from cartoon i'm mean c'mon!)

Don't know if this breaks a stereotype but my family are all hunters and someday i want to do hunting and soon i'll be getting my shotgun license.

I think I've covered everything

I'm a high school girl who cares about her grades. I'm fairly active, I take martial arts, and I'm just as fascinated with history and theology as I am with MLP. Plus, I'm a laid-back individual who is very much against the idea of forcing people to have certain opinions.

  • 4 weeks later...

My room is not full of brightly coloured ponies and I would never put pony stickers on any of my technology, only backgrounds.

I own several firearms... and I'm not Homosexual.Nor do I clop. I hunt almost every week, and yes,I have killed several animals (And yes I do regret one decision I made when I was younger concerning this topic,I'll never forgive myself. Most of them were pests,Nutria, skunks,Racoons, coyotes ect.) I don't constantly think about MLP and I don't own any pony merchandise. I DO have a girlfriend. No,I don't live with my mother. And I do eat meat. I also support the rebel flag and the 2nd amendment (Obviously).(Before you even start s*** about the Rebel flag,it's not about race, the Civil war wasn't about slavery, look it up. I support the rebel flag because it symbolizes American independence and wanting freedom from a monarchy.) So,yeah. Sorry it was a little long.

I have no merch, not even pony backgrounds. The only reason that's the case is because I've got parents I live with though :/ other than that I actually fit the stereotype quite well.

Uhm I guess I made it to States in Track and Field twice in a row, I'm stupid good at nearly any sport I try, I like to blast my loud hip hop/rap music in a public area, I don't use pony BGs (Sonic tbh), I don't clop, I'm straight, I'm in my second year of college, and I will destroy anyone who challenges me to a footrace

I am not a fat sweaty basement dweller who wears pony tshirts and horns and wings, going to pony conventions, using ponies to hide my insecurities about life, while despairing that I will forever be alone and acting emo?

j/k.. kinda..

I've been told by some people that I should model, I have a partner, and I am generally too old to be in this community, but whatever hehe..

I'm thin, Smart, have an outside life, don't force MLP on everyone.

Laughter. That's me.

I see it not only as the aspect of a good friend, but also a virtue for life!

To let the world roll over me and my friends (psst that's you)  and enjoy every moment is my life goal.

So let me make you laugh... Let me make you smile... Let me brighten your day... You may be all the better for it

-I'm a girl. Often, adult fans of the show are assumed to be all male.

-I don't wear any pony-related attire or accessories/other gear. I also don't have any G4 merch. I just have some G3 figures (shudder) from my childhood that I never got rid of.

-I don't talk about the show in my daily life, nor do I have brony friends outside of the Internet. Only one person in real life even knows I'm a fan of Pony.

-I'm not a gamer.

-I'm not scene/emo/grunge

-I'm not an overweight basement dweller. I'm a college student and am fairly physically active.

-I don't have pony-related screen savers/wallpapers.

-I've never attended a convention, nor have I ever dressed as a pony.

-I don't have a pony waifu/husbando.
