Im gonna be totally honest..........I love Pop from the 80's to the mid 90's, but as of now, it is by far the biggest joke.  Even the artists are just.......ugh.....it blows my mind.

Yes, but since when has pitch variation been an objective measure of how good music is? It objectively proves pop music has become less complicated, but since when has complicated objectively meant better? It subjectively means better to a majority of the posters in this thread, but that's not especially scientific, is it?

EDIT : Side note to dubstep haters, pitch fluctuation in modern-day aggro as fuck brostep is humungous considering the amount of pitchbend that typically goes into wobble bass. Probably greater than your average song from... ever, really. Still holding up as an objective measure of the music you think is subjectively bad?

Okay I don't like pop music either, I am by far more of a rock and metal person but you can not scientifically prove that a certain type of music sucks, that's all rubbish. It all comes down to personal preference and that's that.

I'm not one to think that range has anything to do with quality, especially when the person making the music knows how to use that range effectively.

A lot of pop music does have a LOT of issues with sounding exactly the same but they certainly aren't the only genre guilty of this though. It's often easier to point out the differences in something you know more of so those who actively listen to pop can probably point out differences.

Likewise a lot of Power Metal sounds exactly the same, particularly in the vocal department, but if you listen to enough of it you start to see differences.

No need for science to notice that popular music sux.

Well, you know, some people aren't made for music, they doesn't really like music. So for them, which is about the majority of the world, they created a repetitive sound medley style, on which they add what most of them like, controversy, to sell their products. While it's a caricature here, it's plain truth...

So I encourage you to explore the music, there is much more to see than this "pop" garbage. Ironically, "pop" mean popular music, but it quickly became a subgenre of music, to represent everything that enters the top 40 nowaday. Of course, there were good "pop" music, like the Jackson 5 (more of disco-funk) and Michael Jackson from the same group (which come closer to rock-funk).

But there is hope, I have noticed that the music on the radio become slightly more complex, more "funky". They'll eventually come back to the rock style, which they will still call "pop", but I don't care lol. Good music will come back, let's hope.

No surprises there I am a musician so I have a good ear for these things and have noticed this for a very very long time, repetition is a very useful tool in a musicians aresenal as well as tempo and volume but only if used correctly and over using any of these things or is the musical equivalent of performing surgery with a sledgehammer and chainsaw and sewing in stitches with barbed wire. If I want music that will put me to sleep I prefer a nice peaceful lullaby thank you very much.

The only real way I've ever defined pop music is music that doesn't really fit into any other genre and focuses on plain/clean vocals. The vocals (and lyrics) seem to be the focal point of it but they can't really fit into anything else. They have synthesized music, guitars and even electronic sounds but not a strong enough presence of any of these elements or instruments to shift into any of the genres popular for using them.

I am aware of the original definition of "pop" music but as it stands the "nothing" genre we have doesn't have a definition of it's own either so for the time being I refer to it as pop.

I guess I need to come out and say this. I thought I was obvious, but apparently not :/

Of course this is subjective. Of course you can't scientifically prove any music to be bad. I just thought it was kinda cool that some people actually did this, and that there is a quantifiable trend in the hard data. I post a lot of tongue-in-cheek stuff, all you who have been around for awhile should know that :P

As for me, I like some music that could he considered pop. Pop is hard to define. Imagine Dragons is the shit.

I'll consider it "scientific" once it is peer reviewed, until then it resides in the pusdo science department along with feminist literature, and necromancy.

I don't care if the music I like is scientifically proven to "suck", I'm still going to enjoy it. :P And anyone who thinks I'm a lesser person because I don't listen to their preferred type of music is a pretentious elitist who can go stand in the corner with the hardcore religious fanatics who want me to worship their God. XD

I'm not going to believe something simply because a Scientist says so. Not everything "scientists" say is the absolute truth.

Anyways, I can agree that a lot of modern pop music isn't that good.

That doesn't mean it's all bad though. I'm personally a huge fan of Katy Perry's music. I own all of her albums. :derp:

BREAKING NEWS! In a related discovery of pop music being "scientifically" proven to suck, opinions have been scientifically eradicated!

----

I love how everyone is making fun of Bieber because they think that makes them part of the "rational" people.

I listened to 'Confident' by Bieber, and the instrumental version is catchy as hell.

Maybe when he was younger and exploited, he was annoying [talking about music here], but hey, he made it to be a rich 20 year old barely growing a moustache, acting like he's God.

That's something.

Yep, it's ironic that a lot of people claim they're better than the 'uncultured' masses and then jump on the masses hating bandwagon which in and of itself consists of a bunch of people with questionable reasoning for their hatred. Fine to have an opinion, but when you start lashing out you're just a tool yourself.

Also, Confident was damn good. Chance's verse killed as well.
