I've heard some wacky things went down at Everfree Northwest.

  • Assault
  • Molestation jokes around the younger VAs
  • Conventions conspiring against and stealing from each other
  • Open transphobia

Can any of these incidences by confirmed? So far Michelle Creber has denied that the second one happened.

Several of the claims seem to come from PurpleTinker, Bronycon's organizer whom I heard several negative things about (none of which had to do with being transgender).

Can somebody clear the air on all this?

I hope this topic isn't already made, I couldn't find it in the forums.

I'm sure many of you heard of the negative things about the EverfreeNW convention. If not, here is what happened...

The following is copy and pasted from Tumblr:

"

The rest were primarily requests for clearer information or proof. I’ve said it already but I’ll say it again: I would love to give you proof, but my face is not a camera. I have been hoping that more people would come forward with their own stories, and they have been. I was not the only one who saw the kind of behavior that had been going on and more accounts of it are starting to come out. I can’t give you more than that.

That being said, there are a few things I would like to clarify:

Molestation jokes being yelled at Claire Corlett: I don’t know where you guys got the idea that this happened at the CMC panel, as I never said it did. I wasn’t even at that panel. The heckling happened in the halls while I was waiting for a media friend of mine to finish his interview with her. I overheard three young men talking excitedly because they had seen her go into an empty room with said friend and when she came back out to leave the hotel, they started sniggering and crowing things like “Dear Princess Molestia” and “Nooo, come back to that room with me!” This did not occur at the CMC panel. This was in the halls, as was a majority of the things I previously posted about.

Mocking transgendered individuals: A lot of people seemed to think I was talking about purpletinker but up until the last post started getting traction, I had no idea who they were. My complaint was in regards to a group pointing at a transman friend of mine and calling him a “girly faggot” and also in regards to someone shouting “tranny” at a Rarity cosplayer. I’m not sure if the Rarity cosplayer is transgendered or if they were enjoying crossplay, but the point still stands that “tranny” is a slur.

Rape jokes at the EQD panel: A photo was put up toward the beginning of the panel that was a piece of fanart. It was a picture of Trixie crying and running away from some OC pony making a me gusta face (is this still funny???) and a guy in the back corner of the room called out “Yeah, rape her!” and the whole row started laughing. I know a lot of people are going to hum and hah about how that’s not a big deal, but for people who are survivors of abuse, it absolutely is, and to carelessly make jokes like that in a room full of complete strangers, you never know what someone could have been through in the past. And that shit is not funny ever anyway, so why even bother?

Racial slurs: This was something I encountered twice. Once outside of a room where people were doing fanart challenges (I don’t know if this was the official art jam or just a meeting of artists) and a guy and his friends kept using the term “[racism 1] ponies” and again when there was a piece of humanized pony art posted on a wall and he said that “artists who draw Twilight Sparkle as a fat black make [him] sick.” Also, it’s not a racial slur, but I heard the word “faggot” being tossed around like it was going out of style."

I never went to this convention myself, but this is what supposedly happened.

Another thing is the voice actor of Scootaloo actually did hear about the rape jokes. She didn't hear about them personally, but I'm guessing she heard about them when bronies tweeted to her on Twitter saying things like "Are the rape jokes actually true???".

What are your personal feelings on this? Do you think this will effect the views of the brony community? How do feel about the brony community after reading this? Discuss!

Edit: Come on guys, while these stories COULD be bullshit that doesn't mean to toss them out the window.

Still feel the same about the community as a whole. This is just a classic example of the minority of bronies who are also responsible for giving us a bad name.

Personally, people like that should be tossed out on their ear by con staff/security. I know at anime cons there's a standard for behavior that if you don't hold to, you DO get kicked out and I think it's time that BronyCons start doing the same thing. Bad behavior like that should NOT be tolerated, and if you do behave like that, you should have consequences. That kind of stuff is just NOT acceptable and ruins the fun for everyone.

Gotta agree with the posters above, it probably wasn't as bad as people are making it seem. Then again, this kind of tom foolery happens at almost any convention you'll go to.

Almost as bad as the events actually occurring are people making up actual fake stories, presenting them as legitimate events. Don't think you really care about the people there who had a bad time if you're making fun of them.

Oh, and some people called Michelle Creber a liar.

Just another thing to put in my "why I never go to Tumblr" file.

i was at the eqd panel and i didnt hear/see that joke so hopefully it didnt offend anybody (why would it anyway? its just a joke). and as for jokes in the hallways, its whatever, if thats what a group of friends wants to talk about then it shouldnt really effect anybody if they werent being a disturbance to anyone.

its kind of sad that people would talk shit to other people for sexual preference while they are at a MY LITTLE PONY CONVENTION. i mean honestly, come on..really? youre at a mlp convention and youre making fun of people for being different? ok bro lol...

all in all, i didnt really hear or see anything negative at the con. the worst thing i heard was when i was talking to a guy and he called it spaghetticon 2012 lol. it was pretty fun in general and i hope everybody had as good of a time as i did :)

This isn't going to turn into a Purple Tinker thread, she's already had enough of that, and I personally don't think I have much of a right to complain. She seems to be able to handle her own issues, and I'm really tired of seeing drama in general.

I must say, I'm not like what is described. I'd rather people judge me for who I am rather than what I am, anyway.

I just found a conversation between Yelling At Cats, Purple Tinker and The Living Tombstone on Twitter.

Lot's on transphobia.

It seems like the arguement was between two people with Living Tombstone in the middle. I would hardly call that that "lots of Transphobia". Just one guy being asshole

Shhh, didn't you read. being called "he" is apparently offensive. But whatever. making up fake stories to make a group of people look bad is just low.

The lesson here is that bronies are people. Thus, they can be as bitchy, stupid, and hateful as anyone else. No one is truly immune to drama, regardless of what they choose to uphold.

Just try not to be a douche. Let's all take that basic lesson away from all this.

I'm not sure how much of this is BS spread by Purple Tinker, or actual truth, but I think we need to learn that just because you are a brony, doesn't mean you have to live by some sort of code, where you can't say something that may be offensive. I'm not encouraging discrimination to anyone, but bronies are still people, they all have their own beliefs, and we need to respect that.

This is why I hate 'Love and Tolerate', because it's something we should be doing anyway, not just because we watch a TV show.

I already made a thread for this, you can view it here: http://mlpforums.com/topic/29978-negative-everfreenw-experiences/

But to answer your question, it is yes and no.

Apparently all this happened, but was greatly over exaggerated. And no, the VA of the CMC never heard the jokes (thank God).

Conventions are going to have these types of things wither it's Comic-con, Otakon, Bronycon or Anthrocon.

I'm sure that there's both some truth and some B.S. to these claims. While I have no doubt that a minority of individuals within the brony community would do or say things such as were described in the first post of this thread, even in public, I highly, highly doubt that it was as widespread as Purple Tinker described it was.

I do not know the individual Purple Tinker herself, but I've followed enough of what's happened between her and the BronyCon organizers to be able to safely say that she most likely is simply taking her frustration against the organizers out on these conventions by looking for as much negative behavior or occurrences that happen at said conventions as possible, even the most private ones, and trying to blow them out of proportion simply to make these conventions look bad. While I fervently believe that any blatantly inappropriate or unruly behavior at these conventions does need to be dealt with and prevented, as I previously stated, that's not what Purple Tinker is doing or even trying to do in reporting said behavior. Heck, she's not even just reporting it; she's heavily, HEAVILY exaggerating what goes on, from my understanding, simply to take her anger out on these convention's organizers and make them look bad. Not only is that petty and wrong, but the only people it hurts is the community itself; by exaggerating so heavily this negative behavior, Purple Tinker makes it look like it is far more widespread in the community than it actually is, and if she was a true brony that truly cared about the community, she would not be stooping so low making these petty and exaggerated claims and in the process tarnishing the reputations of so many bronies! I understand that she may have, to a degree, legitimate points of concern and reasons to be angry with some of the organizers of BronyCon who threw her out of the organization committee, but taking her anger out on the whole community is no way to win whatever disputes she has; it is petty, immature, and down-right mean-spirited, and goes against everything that our community stands for.

Wow this thread was not what I was expecting at all. I thought it would be about the mess up at registration, some of the canceled or poorly executed panels and the traffic jams that were caused by only having those 3 elevators. The opening statements were not my experience at all.

Overall I thought it was amazing how respectful and nice in general people were. Anytime I was in line a nice general discussion was started and I heard nice things being said to the cosplayers.

I'm sure some of the things above happened but it was not prevalent throughout the con. So do the stories above change my view of bronies. No. It would only change my view on those individuals who did those things. In fact, going to the con improved my view of bronies greatly. There are always a few bad apples especially when you have so many put together in sometimes tight quarters.

I merged the Everfree Northwest threads. Both of them are so closely related that it makes sense to pull them together.

Personally, I only went to Bronycon, and my greatest complainst were primarily aimed at the logistics. Whatever the atmosphere around Everfree Northwest happened to be, it seems the negative aspects were stoked by this ongoing drama on the side. It's unfortunate to read about.

I've never been to a convention, but please tell me we're not going to be the butt of the same kinds of jokes as furcon.

  • 7 months later...

I'm sorry that I can't read through this entire thread to see what was said, but I hope all the rumors were dispelled. That said, I would like to personally make a comment on the matter.

I was a staff member of Everfree Northwest in 2012. I was on the guest relations team, and I worked in the autograph room and closely with some of the liaisons. Let me say that anything involving the CMC is very highly untrue. I know that the liaison for those girls was with them nearly all the time, and when she wasn't, their moms were. All three of their moms were there, and went with them a lot. So if something DID happen, you can bet the convention would hear about it pretty quickly.

As for things that happened to attendees, I cannot say one way or the other. But, if anyone is ever at a convention and something happens, you need to say something right there and then. If someone complains after the convention about a bad experience, there is nothing the convention can do to fix it at that point. Matters need to be dealt with as they come up, and rest assured that the staff and security will deal with them. But, I do know that there were a lot of staff around the convention center, so if something happened, I assume it would have been seen and taken care of. If no one reported anything, can the staff be blamed that there was no justice for the victim(s)? The staff can't do anything if no one complains at the convention. After the con, it's too late.

True. Sorry guys, but Purple Tinker's a nut. Her behavior is the same kind of 'aggressive victimhood' practiced by a few individuals in almost every minority group. She's not even a brony really, she's a convention organizer, and a former one at that.

Pretty funny to see Yelling At Cats calling someone else crazy, but I don't want to trash the guy so I'll leave it at that.

I think StarStep's post is much closer to what the real problems at the convention were, and I'm sure it was a great time for 99% of the visitors.
