gaming Windows 8?

Macs, ugh, my sister and father love Macs so I've had some uh... quality time with them. To put it nicely, let's just say I would rather use Windows 8.

I find it odd I dislike OSX though, as IOS has proven to be really good, but alas, twas not to be I suppose.

I'll admit, OS X is getting worse by the release. I'd much rather use Windows these days instead. But man, go back seven years to OS X 10.4; no better OS has ever existed, IMO. I still use it to this day, everyday.

I suppose I'm in the minority when I say I can't stand iOS. Never have. It's biggest strength is how simple it is. But this also is its greatest weakness, it's just so straight-cut and forward. It's like having a bike with training wheels, with another set of training wheels on those. It's simply not necessary, and severly limits its functionality. Plus, in my humble opinion I think it's devastatingly ugly. I'm much more of a webOS guy. ;)

I personally don't think this'll be very good. As the picture Archangel posted illustrates, the different Windows operative systems have sort of alternated between good and bad. XP was good, Vista wasn't, 7 was good... Could be wrong, of course. ~ They wouldn't deliberately make it bad to fit this little pattern.

I personally don't like Windows 8. To me, it departs way too much from the standard Windows formula, like to Start menu, etc. My biggest gripe is the Start Menu, to me, having to launch into a Start screen is slower than opening the start menu. I just click Start, point to All Programs, and find my program. Since its in alphabetical order, I can easily find what I want, "Paint.net" comes after "Filezilla," while "Audacity" is at the top. On the Start screen, I literally take a good minute or two to find my application, and even then, I usually only recognize it by the icon.

Windows 8 works well on tablets. I wish they would've made some of the features customizable on the desktop version, but alas, we have to resort to other programs to do that job for us.

Now, I disagree with some of you. I've NEVER had a problem with Windows ME. You are more than free to throw your stones at me. Ironically, the only Windows OS that gave me problems was Windows XP. Yup, you heard me right, XP. Until SP2, there were some things that just didn't work right, so until then I stuck with Windows ME. I did use 2000 for a brief period of time, but I didn't really NEED it. Vista on the other hand is a piece of ****. (I didn't use the S word there...) Like seriously, it just sucks. I went up to it, and almost immediately went back down to XP. SP2 made it more bearable, but not is not as good as XP Sp3.

I have used Windows 8... Its like a giant IPad in my opinion... But also if you loved to get most downloads off the internet it will not work...

Windows 7 is wonderful, I've used WIndows 8 and it's horrible, it's like someone put the IOS as their main computer operating system. It's all touch based, not mouse and keyboard based, sure it still works, but it's not nearly as nice. Plus, from what I've read, it's not as Linux friendly, and Microsoft might be trying to push their own app store thing. Which means you wouldn't be able to download any random program off the internet and try it. That's extremely limiting.

And frankly, it's terrifying how accurate this chart is/will be:

I care not about this transparent glass apparatus with which you use to view outdoor objects, for as we speak, I am migrating to Ubuntu!

...Granted it took me five years learn all of Windows' quirks. I hope I can learn Linux in a bit less time. :P

I've seen only one picture of Windows 8 and it looks more like something you'd see from a tablet instead of an actual computer. I bet the programs aren't going to co-op with Windows 8 especially when it looks like it's a completely new OS.

Though all of that is just my personal opinion and is definitely not accurate whatsoever.

I think that - stupid user interface aside - it would be wise to wait a while after it comes out and see what people think before considering replacing your current OS with this one. There will probably be bugs at release and I doubt that many games would be compatible with it (unless they keep the compatibility mode from vista/7).

In conclusion, wait and see what the critics say about it. That might save you a few dollars :P

I'll stick with 7, it's only recently I upgraded from XP when I got my new PC, and even then I've changed all my setting to a Windows Classic since the taskbar and start menu are far easier to use in retro mode.

Microsoft were doing fine, then they started fixing what wasn't broken

It looks like an cell phone OS. Therefore I want nothing to do with it. I do not like touch screen technology. I have never seen what was so great about it. Thus why I still choose cell phones in this day and age that operate with a physical keypad.

Generally, I will go with whatever is new. Vista never bothered me (only the mess of an laptop I had that was using it bothered me), so this is an first. At least Vista kept to looking like an computer OS.

I'm afraid that with this OS, Microsoft is trying to embrace an future of tablets as opposed to real computers. I really hope this isn't what happens. Because again, I do not like touch screens. I don't want tablets. I want desktops and laptops.

Here here I agree 100%, touch screens means your screen is just gonna get dirty more quickly, and it's harder to type with the slight delay on the keypads.

I think looking flash is taking over from useability in many ways

I'll say this. Windows is not bad in terms of functionality, it is a working piece of software, it is fast and works properly.

However the issues are clear, most dominantly with the interface formerly known as Metro, the regular Metro doesn't mesh well with the regular desktop interface, in fact the don't work together at all. All the good things I have seen upgraded within the Desktop view for Windows are actually really good, improved task bar on multi-monitor setups, they improved the Windows Explorer and such, Improvements have been made all around the thing.

Then in comes the bad, the interface formerly known as Metro replaces the start menu completely and turns into a full screen interface. It is accessed by the bottom left pixel on the screen, which is awful when using more the one monitor. The search within it can be improved a lot, because stuff is segregated. Shutting down happens from around here and takes more clicks, and only two apps can be active at one time, with one taking up the whole screen, nearly and the other a tiny bit. Scrolling up down does side to side scrolling which is actually confusing. And the icons are way too big, wasting up too much space.

To me it seems that halfway into developing Windows 8 they decided to turn around and start something new using the old they had. The new being Metro. A lot of things could've been just fine had Microsoft stuck to it's guns or perhaps even diversified Windows, offering truly unique experience for certain users. I don't need Metro, yet others would benefit from having it more.

I'm actually very tempted to buy a Windows 8 tablet when I need to replace my laptop for schoolwork and such. Nice and compact, with mouse and keyboard support when I need them, and a touch interface when I don't, since I have a boiling hatred for laptop trackpads. Plus, since it basically contains 7 within it, I can still run Steam and such.

But when I build my desktop this fall, you'd better believe I'll stick with 7. Very stable, very intuitive, and VERY productive.

That's really all there is to say on the matter.

From what I have heard, it is worse than Vista. Quite honestly, I do not see the point of getting/downloading Windows 8 if I am perfectly happy with Windows 7.

You may have to get one built. Rumor has it that some of the OEM hardware is going to be locked into one specific operating system for "security reasons." Looks like I won't be buying any more off-the-shelf PCs... http://mlpforums.com/public/style_emoticons/default/dry.png

Thankfully that rumor got some clarification. Apparently that specific security feature will only function on the mobile ARM version of Windows 8. If you buy a desktop with Windows 8 off the shelf you can still put say, Linux on it.

Even If Windows 8 was better than than Windows 7 I ain't switching I Love Windows 7, I dunno I feel like I just moved from XP to 7 (Even if it has been a while ago that I got Windows 7,) so I may get windows 8 in the future but I have no desire to get it right now.

And I have no idea when windows 8 is coming out.

Thing is i'm getting a laptop. not a desktop. In a Destop u can easily modify it. But a laptop... not so much. If u buy a Laptop can u still have something other than windows 8 on it?

Yeah, see, from what I've read there will be two big versions of Windows 8, (With all the little subversions we know and love for each.) one will be the full-blown thing, while the other will be more stripped back. The stripped back one is for tablets and Microsoft's new tablet thing they're doing, as long as you avoid the stripped back one, you should have no problem installing Linux on the PC. Or Mac, if you swing that way.

Of course, you should always do your own research on this just in case I'm wrong. I plan to buy one copy of Windows 7 soon and I won't need another copy of Windows until well after Windows 8 is gone. So I'm not too particularly worried about it.

Unfortunately, that is the way technology is progressing. What we know as computers today, will not be around forever. Already, the market is shifting towards tablets and touchscreen technology in dedicated computers. I believe it won't be more than fifteen or twenty years before the "traditional" desktops and notebooks like we know them no longer exist.

Y'all can stick with Windows 7 or whatever you have for as long as you want, but at some point those OS's will be functionally obsolete. New OS releases aren't going to go back to how we do things on computers now, they will continue to change. At some point, you're going to have to upgrade to these and get used to them.

lol @Everypony that says windows 7 is more powerful than windows 8. Windows 8 is obviously more powerful and faster since it's new and Microsoft's goal is to improve their os. Do you seriously think they'd make an operating system that's worse and sell it for a higher price than the last one? Hah, no. I've read alot and seen videos of comparisions between 7 and 8 where it's shown that windows 8 is much faster. Though I haven't really used the os myself.

So @W7 is better than W8. Nope.

However Windows 8 has this stupid look and stupid start menu. That menu is horrible and reminds me a phone or something. But I know that Samsung has made a program you can install which allows you to get that beloved windows vista/7 menu back.

Will I get Windows 8 when it's released? No. I'll wait and see what people says about it. The only thing that I see as a downside with Windows 8 is that Microsoft has been some greedy bastards and done so you can't install any other web browser. Yeah you heard it, you can only use Internet Explorer. That sucks. I want my Firefox. Though, I read that a long time ago and it has probably been changed. I can't see them releasing an os where you can't pick your own web browser.
