gaming GameStop to sell classic games (e.g. N64, PS1, Dreamcast)

As NASCAR showed me this yesterday, it looks like our prayers have been answered. Sure we want to buy new games from the modern days, but then it feels like playing new games over the classics are clearly not the same as the year goes by... until GameStop took the ultimate step in the right direction by starting to sell classic games for those who want to go back in the past and re-live the good old days, like the Nintendo 64, the classic PlayStation, the Dreamcast, heck, even the Genesis from SEGA, even accessories too (but who knows when will it be released). Now you're all thinking "but we can buy classic games from Amazon, which is reliable", or even eBay!", but to me, they're pretty pricey when it comes with shipping after making a purchase, so GameStop stepped in and saves the day. The catch? Well they need to see if the classic games from the early '00s, '90s, or even the '80s are in good, if not perfect, condition, as well as the cover boxes and instruction manual books so that they would sell well for most gamers to get their hands on.

I understand you guys play new games nowadays, but let's re-live the classics to make us feel younger and re-live the past, shall we? ;)

Honestly, I think they're setting themselves up for great success with this. Personally, I can't wait for this because I've been really itching to know what it felt like during the earlier days of gaming like the 80's or 90's, most of which I wasn't alive for so I wasn't able to experience, and to just buy the games right from a store, as if it were a fresh new copy.

Great move, and one I think they should have made long ago. Personally, I'll stick with Play N' Trade if I'm going to buy old stuff from a retailer since they let you try things before you buy them. Feels pretty bad dropping a bunch of money on some old gems only to get them home and find that they don't work.

Hooray, I can buy my obscure sega genesis games with out having to buy an overpriced copy on ebay that costs thousands of dollars!

Fun fact, though, when Diablo 3 came out there was this guy in line who had this giant cart full of old N64 games. Whether or not he was able to trade in those games I don't know.

OH MAN! THIS HAS TO BE SOME OF THE BEST NEWS I'VE HEARD ALL WEEK! Aside from being accepted onto Disability, that is. Anyway, this has to be one of the best moves Gamestop has made EVER!!! No more trusting pawn shops with games that may or may not work!

This is probably one of the greatest things to ever happen in the history of forever.

Is gamecube not old enough to be included? :( I loved the gamecube... But all those N64 games are just going to blow my mind. I need Conker's Bad Fur Day again. ^_^

Depends on how much they're selling the games for... I remember seeing them them sell super metroid for around $20-$25 back in the gamecube era. If these are their prices it's bound to fail, as I can just buy it for $8 now on the Wii's virtual console or get an emulator of it for free (note I do not condone emulators).

There are some games that you can't get now for other systems like Goldeneye which probably would sell well even for like $20 though. Or versions of games that havent had their glitches fixed or blood and shields censored like Ocarina of Time (I've always wanted the gold cartridge).

Of course not all games are gonna be like $20, but the good and slightly rare ones probably will be - like Super Metroid, Mario and the Seven Stars, Starcraft for N64, etc.

I need to pick up Conker's Bad Fur Day and Duke Nukem 64, maybe Donkey Kong Country too.

I've seen third party modern consoles that can play old NES games with controllers too. That needs to be done with the N64 as well.

We were talking about his on RFgeneration. The problem is the potential for them to sell them at inflated prices, that and if every moron goes to Gamestop it could dry up the rest of the retro game market and drive up prices.

This is awesome, I hope I'll be able to get all my old N64 games back... which I stupidly sold to them a long time ago...

Well my local Gamestop still sells used Gamecube games, so I don't think so yet.

... I hate my local Gamestop now. I look online and I see a few titles up for grabs, but hardly any of the ones that I want, really. Like Pikmin 1 and 2 are both out, I think... :(

So they're returning to doing this? I remember maybe five or 6 years ago, my local GameStop still sold all the way back to used NES games. Picked up a few when they were around, they were never more than $10 or $12. Would be nice if they did it again.

Well, you can find these games on eBay and I have seen Nintendo 64 games on Amazon before, but I suppose that it is good that they're branching out and selling them in stores.

Maybe it will make kids buy more retro games.

That'd be pretty cool! While Gamestop can be a ripoff sometimes, it'd be neat to be able to pick up some older games from them. In my area, the closest store that sells classic games is only open on Fridays, Saturdays. and Sundays. Other than them, the closest one is about 15-20 miles away, and that's a rather small store.

A lot of games on eBay, Amazon, and even Craigslist are overpriced (But not all, sometimes you can find a seller that isn't looking for an arm and a leg, but there are too many "bad" sellers that the good ones are hard to find.). Sometimes, you may even stumble upon a fake copy, like I did with Pokemon Sapphire a little bit ago. If GameStop is getting back into the business, hopefully they have the resources to check for fake games and not just sell them to unsuspecting people.

Ugh this is not good for me. I happen to sell games like this on ebay.... -_- Ugh ....wonderful

Seems like I'm the only one hurt by this move.

You'd be pretty surprised if you see the classic games pretty cheap and in good condition. I wouldn't trust eBay because they never got my money back for sending me the wrong game (plus, they never filed a report to the fraud seller ever since), so the only retail store I trust when it comes to games is GameStop.

Ah hell yeah now that Is what I am talking about! I used to hate buying from GameStop for the most part! There is this place next to my house called mckays: used books, games, music, etc... And that is where i usually buy all my music/games etc! But if GameStop decides to do this I will be in there in a heartbeat!!

This is awesome. It's about time companies like GameStop started doing something like this.

Even though it'd be nicer to be able to buy fresh copies of classics rather than pre-owned, I doubt that would happen (Unless GS manages to pull off some weird magical mass production trick)

Now if only my local game shop will do this...

I wanna get my hands on Mario Kart for my 64 now :) maybe even Super Mario RPG? probably neither of those games though they will probably fly off the shelves or be like 80 bucks.

What I want the most is a working copy of Majoras Mask since mine broke

And here I heard they were starting to phase out PS2 and PSP games in select stores. If they are doing this then they will likely stop phasing them out and I'll be more likely to find games I want at the stores.

I know the manager at my local Gamestop wants the PS2 to go away (I'm not sure if he even realizes how many people still want the PS2 to be here and how many still buy the games, even if it's not from his store) and I thought he would start phasing. If this is true then I won't have to worry about that.

I'm actually gonna go there today or tomorrow and hope to see Persona 3 FES there (I checked the website and it said that they should have some though low on stock but Gamestop's website is iffy on the game locator area so I'm gonna check in-store)

I'm not going to trade in any of my retro games to gamestop... If I were you guys, I wouldn't be so quick to sell your old games because they are going to give you half what you could get on Ebay...

Another reason I'm not liking this idea, once gamestop starts this, you are going to see less items on the internet to buy because its just easier to drive down the street to a Gamestop than listing it, hoping for a buyer, and then shipping it hoping you aren't going to get ripped off. It will suck to be a seller.

Gamestop also is going to be picky with trade ins. Just because you have a rare game to trade in doesn't mean they will take it. All it needs is a small chip in the corner of the cartridge teeth for them to refuse it. it can work in your console, but GS has to guarentee that their products work. There will be several people like you who will be willing to part with their old games, so they can afford to be picky.

It's a buyers market now. If you plan to sell any old games, do it now. It will be easy to buy the game later if you change your mind.
