Were you satisfied with King Sombra as the antagonist?

I come here fresh after the stream and though thoroughly satisfied with Episodes 1+2, part of me is a little disappointed that King Sombra didn't have a more prominent role.

All he really did was laugh and i think he had about 1 or 2 small lines. I don't know why, but i had it in my head that he was going to be really hard to beat (physically) but in the end he amounted to a bunch of smoke with his traps doing most of the work, which still wasn't that much.

I have mixed feelings about him but the episodes on a whole were brilliant. What did you think of him? Was he the worst villain yet or am i underrating him?

Nah, pretty underwhelming for a villain. Automatically falls to 4th behind Discord, Chrysalis, and Nightmare Moon. Looked cool but didn't get to talk or do much. At least he was destroyed in a different way besides the RAINBOW BEAM OF DOOM from the Elements

No.

He was just "roar", "muahahaha" and "roar".

The episodes where good. And unlike the Wedding Two parter, all of the Mane Six contributed somehow. But at the cost of the blandest villain so far. The wedding suffered from the Mane Six not doing much (except Twilight), but in return we got a good villain. The Discord, and NMM episodes managed to balance both out. <.<

Well no I wasn't satisfied. Its not that he was a bad villain, I mean he makes crystal ponies into slaves and that sounds like a good villain to me! Problem was he really didn't have a lot of lines nor did he really get a chance to cause some havoc

He's a wasted character with lots of potential but sadly he really wasn't used that much in the episode and he was defeated so easily which makes the episodes lacking. Still a great episode though mainly for Twilight, that's what made it for me. Seeing her overcome trials and etc, as well as in the end of what Luna held, that special book

Not a bad start, Great one in fact, just a villain that didn't have much chance to shine like with Discord or Chrysalis

sadly no. but I did see potential for him but there wasn't enough time if it was a 3 parter and there was actually a moment when he had control it would have been better and he could show off his power.

anyway whats done is done it isn't the worst episode but it was the worst 2 parter, and Somber will likely be treated better as a villain in fan fics

and art i know i have an idea of what a Pegasus would look like if they were consumed by Sombre to create a dark corrupted alicorn

Sombra was definitely not as good as Discord or Chrysalis mainly because he lacked actual character progression or depth like the past villains. He was kind of just....there. Not saying he was bad though. Just kind of disappointing that we couldn't get more background info about him.

They definitely could and should have had him do more than what he did. Now that I look at it, he reminds me of NMM. Doing nothing and losing easily. Maybe he was just so full of himself that he didn't feel the need to try until it was too late?

I wouldn't say disappointed, just somewhat let down. I wouldn't call him the worst villain, cause NMM takes that spot imo.

he was cool and all but he didn't do enough. if he would have had a bigger roll or made more appearances i would be happy. but as a bad guy he was cool.....i would have made him an alicorn thou.

all in all he was ok.....i just wish he had a bigger roll, speaking and action wise.

Pfft, nothing but hate xD Come on people :) Yeah he lacked but I don't think outright negativity and nothing else is needed.

Villains are portrayed in different ways, and I think since Sombra was an ancient evil from the past, he wasn't going to be portrayed in his normal form much; Celestia and Luna turned him to shadow, so he was stuck as that until the very end, when he was approaching the Crystal heart itself, about to claim it's power back as his own, and ultimately hide it away I imagine.

Though he didn't have a TON of lines, the ones he did have were pretty bad-ass. My crystal slaaaaaves...

Say what you want, but slavery puts him above the other three villains in terms of malevolent cruelty, and I enjoyed him fairly well. Besides, there's nothing to say he won't ever be seen again. Might be unlikely, but he is the main antagonist of a brand new territory we now know of. You never know.

I would be lying if I said I was satisfied with him, but I'm not when I'm saying I did enjoy his appearance. Even in my review I gave him a 4/10, he did have one or two moments that made it a bit better. He just didn't get enough time or action to actually make me a happy person :o

you do have a point. and his horn was the only thing that flew off of him in one piece. So maybe that will spawn something latter in the season. I mean he was good dont get me wrong, its just after having the other three bad guys do so much would have thought he would have done something bigger.

But that dark crystal magic was beast thou.

Thinking about it, why should he be as amazing as Discord or Chrysalis?

For one thing, he only wanted to take over one city. The others wanted the entire Equestria. Really, he wasn't as big of a threat. Meaning because he wasn't that big of a threat, he shouldn't be super spectacular.

I was just kind of dissapointed that he mostly sat there and growled and that he only got a physical body for like 2 minutes and then he was destroyed. actually was he permenantly defeated or was he just shot back out into the ice. If so he could come back and actually do something.

A villain that had potential but due to the lack of lines, he technically underperformed throughout the entirety of the two-parter. When he did talk, it was interesting, but nothing nerve-racking unlike, say, whenever Chrysalis or Discord spoke. Now THOSE two knew how to get the attention of the audience. While I did pay attention to Sombra, it was pretty tricky to do so as it became so bland that I wanted to know what the others were doing.

He looked pretty awesome, and always, throughout that episode you could feel his overwhelming presence and the notion of failure. He was the scariest out of all of them in my opinion and created the most tension, you never really knew what he was going to come out with. The fact that he was underdeveloped left you thinking what's going to happen.

He's more of a symbolic character, developing him would mean that you'd have to cut out other parts of the story to fit it in. I wasn't dissapointed too much with it, except that he died completely

Absolutely not, I have had my issues with the Griffon Brush off mainly due to the conclusion that it was all Gilda's fault when Pinkie Pie also acted like a jerk. And I had my issues with the Canterlot wedding two parter mainly due to the fact that Twilight supposedly was some big loner then all of a sudden her brother who was supposed to be so important to her who she has never mentioned before just suddenly appeared and just so happened to be marrying her old foalsitter who she also never mentioned. But the lackluster presentation of Sombra as "once upon a time there was this evil king who enslaved an entire empire" *cue evil laughter*, "come slaves" *cue evil laughter* "no no no nooooooooooooooooooooo!" Was just sad and makes me a little worried about season 3, I really hope this isn't a sign of a downturn.

I already shared my thoughts about Sombra in the episode thread, but I'll share them here again as well.

First, he looked great, I loved his character design.

Second, while he had so much potential to be a great villain, he himself was pretty underwhelming, and he most definitely talked less than any MLP villain to date!

However, I loved the role he played in both episodes' execution. The suspense that his foreboding presence made the entire time kept me on the edge of my seat; even throughout the Crystal Fair's festivities, you just had a sense the whole time that everything could fall apart at any minute. As I said in the other thread, I don't think any other villain has created as much suspense so constantly throughout two episodes as Sombra. Yes, there was suspense surrounding Nightmare Moon, Discord, and Chrysalis, but usually it was brief suspense, with Chrysalis probably having the most. But Sombra?!?! There was this constant suspensful feeling the whole time up until he got defeated!

So overall, while I was disappointed in Sombra himself as a villain, I was not disappointed in the role he played in both episodes' execution; I thought the suspense that he provided contributed a lot to the atmosphere of both episodes, and it was one of my favorite things about both episodes.

Also, how could anypony not love his catchphrase?!?! B)

"Crsytal. Crystal! CRYSTALLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Would it have been a good idea to have made him this wonderful villain though? After all, he was going after one city. Not the entirety of Equestria. It would have looked foolish for an amazing villain just go after one city. Plus, it was just a "test." This was probably just suppose to be a build up episode of Twilight's story ark.Just getting things started. She'll probably face a greater villain by the end.

I think generic villain was actually what they were going for.

Reason why he wasn't that good is mostly because it was a siege-type episode. They where in the city and they had to keep Sombrero at bay, meaning that int he ideal situation they didn't really see him much. He could sure have been better, but while the other episodes where all about trying to get rid of an enemy that is already there, this was about keeping Mitt Sombrero away from the city, thus creating less villain-on-antagonist action. All in all, I'd give him a 5/10. He looked epic, but he lacked story and cool lines.

Yeah, that was my biggest beef with the premiere. The episode was amazing, yet they didn't make the villain interesting enough :( too... um, Cliche.

I guess we should expect a million and one fics about him, though :P
