This thread is very old, and if I recall correctly, most of the added fields were at the request of readers from years past.  The OP was simply trying to cater to what people wanted.

Just as I thought. He was simply trying to make an interesting thread and have a poll that includes those he didn't originally think of.

I'm not trying to be dismissive of previous voters, but most of the Muslim votes seemed to be from people who were more "Muslim-light", possibly not even knowing enough about Islam to say whether they identified with Shia, Sunni or other.

What makes you think this? You stalked all 22 profiles?

Also, to fill up all the extra character space... What do you suppose "Reform" is? No one voted that option!

Yeah.  I totally stalked 22 profiles.  :o

It's just from what I remember of the conversations in this and other threads from the past couple years.

Im mostly an Agnostic but sometimes i revert to my own. non-biblical version of Christianity which is basically this: There is no Hell or Satan. The eating of the forbidden fruit was what God wanted, as He wanted the human race to have free will to choose, didnt want them blind. Eventually, Jesus was born and went to die on the cross, so all who believed would go to Heaven to be with God (note that you have to be sincere with your belief, God WILL know if you are not and you will simply have the same fate as the non believers, which i will talk about now). But those who dont, simply die permanently. Its a much more reasonable choice, and insures only those who WANT to be with God are in Heaven, instead of those only going to Heaven because they are afraid of Hell. I hope this make sense. its kind of like Annihilationism. Also instead of the 10 commandments i follow the Three Laws, which basically amounts to, if it does not affect one's life (murder), liberty (slavery, rape), or property (theft), do what you will. Sin still exists, but its less about right and wrong and more about simply being imperfect. We are imperfect beings, and we need the protection of Jesus's sacrifice to be near a Perfect Being like God. Im sorry if this makes no sense.

It makes perfect sense. It also is not quite non-denominational at least as far as doctrine goes as it sounds quite similar to Gnostic Christianity.

I'm still confused as you said you no longer identified as such and instead converted to Buddhism. Which you know I don't have a problem with but still.

Ive sort of made a turn around, attending mass at my old church and remebering how it was and how it should be reawakened my faith in the Church as a benevolent force. Doesn't mean i'm any less of a buddhist.

I'm so glad to hear that it was such a healing experience for you though. Who knew a trip home could do someone so much good?

They should make an "Athiest Church", basically, a place of community for the non-religious. Wouldnt that be good thing to have?

I once suggested it, and people through the concept back into my face. They were offended at even the suggestion of such a thing.

This exists! :D Yes, the idea began with two British comedians, but the idea is a sound one. There could probably be a church of My Little Pony (for all 88 of the "Equestreists" on this poll, for example)... Still makes me laugh though!

If they made a Church of Celestia, I would definitely call myself a member. After all, why CAN'T God take the form of a goddess of the sun who is at once a leader, teacher, and mother figure?

I would also question why such a thing would require to call it such. Wouldn't any collection of atheists in a community qualify? Why does it need to be called a church? Particularly if the entire point of atheism is the absence of such institution.

I'm an Atheist because I don't believe in anything, I was brought up Catholic but I never really believed in it.

I've never really been a fan of religion in general because although in most cases it wasn't the original intent it often seems to cause far more harm than good in the world.

There are other religions you could learn about. See if they make more sense than Christianity does for you. (Also, just speaking as a Catholic, one doesn't go to Hell because they don't believe in God. It's not what you think, it's what you DO that matters.)

I'm nonreligious. Why? I grew up in a nonreligious family, so I was not brought up with a given set of beliefs. When I was younger I would ask all sorts of questions about life and death, and my parents would always tell me, "some people think that, but no one knows for sure."

So, that was the approach that had for a long while. I grew up knowing many things in life were uncertain--it was all really just people's belief. Watching documentaries on astrophysics and quantum mechanics when I was 10 years old only convinced me further of that. Even reality itself is murky, I learned, and if you think you understand anything, you probably don't.

But now that I'm older, why still? Why not find something to believe in? Well, the truth is, I've never been able to convince myself that a God exists. If anything, I see it as being an impossibility. Most people look at the world around them and think "someone must have created that," but I look at depictions of God and think, "there's no possible way an all-powerful being like this could ever exist. Omniscience is itself a contradiction. The very existence of hell violates the second law of thermodynamics."

I see religions as being stories, but nothing more.

It's not for everyone and I acknowledge that. I would only stress that my priest and devout parents have taught me that it's our actions that define our character in the eyes of God. After all, if an atheist is charitable, merciful, and forgiving, and a Christian is selfish, wrathful, and vengeful; who is living more like Jesus?

"there's no possible way an all-powerful being like this could ever exist. Omniscience is itself a contradiction.

How exactly does knowing all of creation count as a contradiction?

The very existence of hell violates the second law of thermodynamics."

That requires that one views Hell as not only the strictly Christian version, and not even that as the Bible never describes Hell as a place it's Dante Alighieri who gave us a far more complex picture than fire and brimstone, but one sees Hell as a physical place which most true spiritualists would not.

my parents always shoved religion down the throats of everyone,i wasn't givin a choice of religion,"i was born a catholic" they said, and forever i shall remain one.ill accept a religion, but if i am to be under one...i will have to see,all they ever said was "believe in jesus and your sins will be removed from gods eye,

If God is all powerful, then he should be able to create a boulder heavy enough that he cannot lift. If he can lift it, then he couldn't create a boulder heavy enough. If he can't lift it, then he isn't strong enough. In either case, he is not all-powerful. An all-powerful being is a physical impossibility.

Omniscience is impossible, just as well. If God has no physical body, then he doesn't know how to breathe, how to walk, or how to swallow--in much the same way we don't know how sharks sense electrical currents in the water. Additionally, if God is a perfect being, then he does not know imperfection. He doesn't know what it feels like to make a mistake. Therefore, God is not omniscient, and could not ever possibly be omniscient.
