Overall good episode.  Just a couple of quick points:

I love, love, LOVE Luna taking on Celestia's role in this episode, imparting wisdom to her subjects.  She was kinda getting the short end of the stick for some time, and this season has started to rectify that.  I like that she has her own niche as the Princess of the night, and of course she'd be the one to help ponies in their dreams.

The ending scene was a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming.

Sweetie Belle is a bad singer now? WTF?

Luna, who's clearly been stalking Scootaloo all night, invaded Rainbow Dash's dreams and somehow informed her of the incoming danger, and she either woke Dash up, or Dash then woke up herself. That's the theory I've seen going around.

*Facepalms* Of course. Head canon Accepted.

Scootaloo: "But we haven't even sung any campfire songs yet!"

So let's gather 'round the campfire, and sing our campfire song!

Our C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E S-O-N-G song!

And if you don't think that we can sing it faster than you're wrong!

But it'll help if, you just sing, along!

BUM BUM BUM!

I thought of that when I saw it. :D

I burst into song.

SEE AY IM PEA EF EYE ARE EE ES OH IN JEE SONG!

OUR SEE AY IM PEA EF EYE ARE EE ES OH IN JEE SONG!

AND IF YOU DON"T THINK THAT WE CAN SING IT FASTER THAN YOU'RE WRONG!

BUT IT'LL HELP IF YOU JUST SING ALONG!

Heh, I liked reading the theories on how Rainbow Dash managed to save the day once again.  But arriving in the nick of time to save a "doomed" pony has become her forte after all, hasn't it?  While not exactly a Pinkie Sense, maybe her loyalty element lets her know when her friends are in trouble.  Either that or RD got up to pee, saw Scootaloo missing, and went out to find her.

It's time for me to give you some credit, too. This episode was akin to Bruce Wayne's training in the mountains as soon as the theme of conquering your fear was first mentioned. You see, What Scootaloo really feared was inside herself. She feared her own imagination. You fear your talents, the drive to do great or terrible things. But then, at the end of the episode, perhaps through a rigorous seven years of training, it was time for Scootaloo to get over it all.

"We have purged your fear. You are now ready to lead these mares. You are ready to become a member of the League of Shadows."

On a more canon note, I saw several other interesting things I'd like to point out. First, the Rarity treatment that she gave to Sweetie Belle - normally I would be annoyed with her for doing such a thing, putting her in manual labour and all, but I can brush this off as nothing more than comedic effect. It isn't uncommon for cartoons to display certain characters doing all the work for a rather prim character,  and in this case, it was Rarity. Second, Rainbow Dash snoring like a horse - that's one of the more rare occurrences where the ponies actually displayed that sort of stuff, and I do think it was for major laughs and nothing more (that scene itself was a big fat joke).

The appearance of Princess Luna was sort of surprising. Not just her appearance, but it was just revealed that she had a power to tap into ponies' dreams and perhaps try to help them out! Darkrai, anyone?

491.png

Darkrai feeds off of people's dreams, which actually gives them nightmares, but the similarities between the two makes me wonder if they had Darkrai's ability in mind when they wrote this episode. Either way, a fantastic addition. It's only fitting that the Princess of the night would be able to travel deep into somepony's mind and see what they dream of... in fact, it strikes me as a bit odd, but ponies could plot the wicked in their dreams, and who better to just step forth in such a scenario than Luna? Whatever they could be planning could come crashing down instantly. After all, the night is unnerving all things considered, and it's easier to perform heinous acts as a result.

Also, those sounds that Scootaloo heard the first time when Rainbow Dash told everypony the story, her walking down the forest in terror, that reminded me of Amnesia: The Dark Descent where you have this grotesque figure following you wherever you went, and you'd have to seek refuge in the shadows to avoid it. It might be a stretch, but the sound effects were so similar to the game's that it couldn't help but scream out "AMNESIA" for each step Scootaloo took. That, like you said, wasn't enough for it to delve into the realm of fanon and it did a good job on staying true to itself instead of portraying itself out to be a fanfiction-turned-video.

And - this one is amusing - but Scootaloo did bring up a story of her own. There were ponies living in the land of rainbows, happy friendship, and smiles, and other silly things that she would have inevitably said had it not been for Rainbow Dash interrupting her. Sound familiar? What reminds you of rainbows, happy friendship, and smiles?

my-little-pony-wallpaper-mural-753-p.jpg

Yeah... when you put that way, Scootaloo, that is one terrifying story. One that many bronies would never live down.

I was a bit surprised by Sweetie Belle's terrible singing, but I did end up chalking up that it was nothing more than goofing off, like you said, using it for comedic purposes and the sort. Nothing serious - after all, we heard Bad Seed, perhaps the best CMC song to date just a couple of weeks ago. All in all, an enjoyable episode with tremendous replay value.

How does Luna riffle through everyone's dreams to find and put a stop to bad ones, considering the sheer number of ponies there would be in the whole world? Assuming Equestria has a day/night cycle like Earth where daytime in one part of the world is nighttime in another part, wouldn't Luna be on duty stopping bad dreams constantly? Also, take note that Luna says that it is her DUTY to come into ponies' dreams. Did the ponies of Equestria give her this duty and willingly surrender the privacy of their dreams to do so? Why can't the ponies of Equestria handle their nightmares themselves? Her statement about this being her duty could also be interpreted as Luna saying that she is doing this because it is her job, not because she cares particularly deeply about Scootaloo's well-being (at least not more than she does about anyone else).

Equestria only exists on one side of the planet. Night is the same for everypony there. I assume only non-pony races live on other continents.

Perhaps Luna has a dream alarm which goes off when she detects a pony in a Nightmare who needs help. Like a Lunasense or something.

Thus the amount of dreams she visits would be severely cut down from some gigantic number of millions of dreams constantly happening.

Also, even if dreams which she needs to attend happen at the same time, it's possible that she might be able to be subconsciously multiple places at once.

It's magic. Anything's possible. :)

-Yay time for my input-

This episode was a huge developing point not only for Scootaloo, but for Rainbow Dash as well, two aspects that needed addressing for quite some time, even if it does not agree with what the fandom believes in.

Let's start off with Rainbow Dash, because of season 2 she has been portrayed as egotistical (swifts through sfw words)........meanie. Especially in the Mare Do Well episode, despite her suppressive loyalty trait, it has not been really expressed all that much through out most of the episodes. It's nice to see a different side of Rainbow Dash that we have needed for a while.

Now Scootaloo shares a lot of similarities to Rainbow Dash, one of witch is that we don't know where she is from, but it makes all the difference because she is a filly. Does she have a sister, parents, any sort of family? This is unkown for quite a long time, and people speculate if she is an orphan. Of course the other possibility is that perhaps she does have a family, but is an only child and just needs someone to look up to.

I believe this episode was executed very well, and it was time for a realy scootaloo episode, and to see Rainbow Dash and her bond like that was really heart touching and I hope this opens up a door to another plot in later episodes.

Also as a side note, seeing some luna in the episode was interesting, how she was applied to the episodes story like, shows a whole other side to luna that we never knew. So kudos to hasbro for that.

Overall, this was a daww filed episode that showed a lot of character development, and personally  I can respect that more then anything, great job!

I am obviously not the only one who thought of this during the episode.

I was very happy to see Luna again and my sister was beside herself with happiness.

1) Oh my gosh that was the most heartfelt episode I ever saw. I almost cried at the end (but I didn't, okay?) I'm glad Rd & Scoot sisters is finally cannon.  It was great to see Luna there, how she helps you out in your dreams. That is just wonderful. My heart and brain are exploding. This was by far the best episode ever in the history of all episodes, and the only thing that would have made it better would be if scootaloo sang a sad song about her fears (that would make the tap start flowing). This episode deserves a song. It deserves it NOW.!!!!

2) why does Rarity force poor Sweetie to child-labor? That's so mean!! Poor sweetie Belle  :(

3) Scootaloo is now my favorite pony with RD. The two deserve to share that special spot. :)

4) There have been 2 CMC episodes already and there are only 6 episodes? Heads-up, ponyfolk, we've got a lot of CMC this season!

5) RD WAS AFRAID OF A CAMPFIRE STORY!!!!?????? :o

I'm sorry, I just cant imagine that.

6) i think Rainbow Dash was really, idk, kinda show-off-y this episode. But she made a good comeback at the end when she saves Scootaloo ( But how did she know? It's like the rumor people were talking about, Luna might have told her.)

7) If Luna told her about it, then isn't it possible that Luna might appear a LOT more frequently this season?

8) This Season is just full of tests, fandom, and HUGE confessions. If they continue making episodes like this one, MLP might be able to hook themselves a couple thousand more bronies....

9) Headless horse? Really? I guess he keeps his brain in his stomoach.

10) Scoot, you gotta giggle at the ghosties!

Why is this episode one of the best episodes of all time thus far?

1) Scootaloo-centered episode. She underwent so much character development and sported so many varying facial expressions in one episode that a d'aww and a HNNG! couldn't NOT be produced from the viewer. And guess what? Scootaloo turned out to be an extremely entertaining character!

2) It held consistency with Cutie Mark Crusaders behavior, Rarity's humourous bourgeoise appeal, Applejack's head-nodding maturity and Rainbow Dash's spunkiness. These are all characters that we love to see interact with each other, and the writers pulled it off splendidly. Not to mention the chuckles and overall replay value!

3)Sweetie Belle song. If that little fully sings a song - no matter what song it is - it's an automatic victory for the viewer.

4) The MEMES! Oh, the MEMES! The Fanfics! Oh, the FANFICS! The FAN VIDEOS!!! Oh, the FANVIDEOS!!! This episode produced so many potential memes, fanfics and FANVIDEOS that it's downright scary. And that's a good thing. We can expect so many laughs and d'awws in the future.

5) Princess Luna. Enough's been said.

6) Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo's sister-like relationship is finally canon. We can probably expect Scootaloo's flight skills to be advancing much more quickly as future episodes come out.

7) Do I need to say more? AGAIN, IT'S A FU#%ING SCOOTALOO EPISODE!

Hands down one of my favorite episodes. It was humorous, suspenseful, d'aww worthy and utterly satiating.

Simply put: I feel good.

Now it's time I go continue Spike's Scootaloo. :)

OMG YES FINALLY THIS EPISODE CAME OUT ON YOUTUBE AND I JUST FINISHED WATCHING(Ya know after I read like every post here almost..)

So my thoughts the episode was simply amazing, i have to agree with a point brought up by someone else that I think the creators were kinda expecting this kinda thing to happen from the beginning really. I mean Scootaloo has always been a big RD fan, and they both have pretty similar personality, therefore its not really even fan service in my eyes, but even if you think it is I don't find it a bad thing in the slightest!( I personally don't have anything wrong with fan service, as long as its not extreme amounts.)

I loved the references to old episodes, I really liked Sweetiebelles puppy dog face, and how she does the whole RARITY WILL LOVE TO GO CAMPING(Like she did in sisterhoove social where shes like RARITY WILL THINK ITS A GREAT IDEA!)

Not to mention the reference to the ghost story twilight told, and Sweetiebelles singing(Which I found to be funny). Not to mention LUNA APPEARANCE OMG!

But to the star of this episode, Scootaloo(It is her episode afterall) This episode literally made me love her so much more(It even made me like RD alot more..) Sweetiebelle was my favorite CMC, but after this... I may have to change to Scootaloo. Seriously this made Scootaloo, AND rainbowdash so much more relateable characters.

This episode is one I have anticipated alot though, regardless of my thoughts on Scootaloo before it, I've been waiting for this all week, and I was worried my anticipation would make this episode fall flat, BUT IT DIDN'T! In fact it almost surpassed it! The wonderfulness of this episode, it has everything a good episode of MLP has had, I can't complain about anything really!

And that ending, I think that is the best ending of an episode in the show, if not a very close up there. Scootaloo's  crying was so adorable and made me want to hug her. (No I actually didn't cry, mostly because I don't want my parents to come in and be like WHY ARE YOU RANDOMLY CRYING? o-o.?)

And the hug with her and Rainbow, that made me grin so hard, and brought so much warmth and happiness to my heart <3 :D It was wonderful, I'd have to say this was the most heartwarming episode I can say of the season, if not the whole series.

And the Rainbow being Scootaloo's sister almost, its finally cannon! :D And since thats cannon, that means Scootaloo being sisterless Is also cannon. I think that also means that Scootaloo being an Orphan is also cannon. While it wasn't actually stated in the episode, I think it was implied a pretty good bit. And besides I don't think in a show like MLP they are going to touch on the topic of scootaloo being an orphan ever directly, its a bit dark for a kids show, same with AJ's parents.

So this episode was amazing, there isn't really anything to dislike! I mean I was sorta disappointed they never addressed Scootaloo's parents, but then I though about it and I kinda figure they probably couldn't do that anyways. (However I'm still curious where Scootaloo lives. :P.)

So yeah I'm pleased, it met my expectations, and more! Also this was the first episode in a while where I avoided any Spoiler videos or stuff, so I didn't get spoiled for any of it. Which is a bit deal in my book, considering how many things I've spoiled for myself before.. :P.

I might have to watch this episode again, the amount of adorableness+Awesomeness made me explode :D. This is another episode that I may not be able to get enough of :P. Not to mention I think Scoots is my favorite CMC now.(If not atleast in extremely close contending with Sweetiebelle.)

I find it kind of funny that many people here are saying that they loved the episode mostly based on the 2-3 minutes of Luna/Scootaloo interaction and Rainbow Dash/Scootaloo interaction near the end of the episode. I thought the rest of the episode before that was really no better or worse than the standard episode.

Why does Rarity still wear what I presume are sunglasses even while lounging by the campfire at night?

No way, I loved the whole damn thing. The camping trip idea, seeing the mountains, a break from Twilight (good to see she's not mandatory in every show), solid dialogue where each pony got decent lines and no one faded into the background, more of Applejack's responsibility and dry sense of humor, the CMC featured yet not obsessing over cutie marks or something cutie-mark related, and Scoots' overall situation which we all went through as children. This felt so much more genuine than most S3 episodes so far, I don't know how anyone could not notice. Sure, they showed us something we wanted to see, but they did it in a way that didn't come off like "hey bronies, here's something we thought you'd want to see!" It came off naturally.

And as for Rarity's sunglasses...it's so she can watch the MLP writers weave, then breathe their storylines.

Or if that doesn't work...

im starting to wonder if Sweetie Belle and Rarity are actually related. SB has the strength of 10 fillies, and she possess that southern kindness.... not to mention Belle is a term for a well manner southern gal. really makes you wonder...

I feel like it could have something to do with the fact that they grew up fairly apart from each other. While Applejack and Applebloom grew up on the farm together, and thus have much in common, Rarity likely moved into her own house while Sweetie Belle was still rather young. We've already seen that Rarity is quite different from her parents, so I'm sure that had something to do with it. Also, Rarity could've gone through a rebellious stage in her life which causes her now to try and disassociate herself from anything that would be like what her parents would do.

Also, Sweetie Belle has gone through her life without being able to preform any magic (that we know of). This would make it so she was forced to use manual labor and get stronger to preform tasks her sister could easily do now with magic.

But honestly, great episode. Loved Sweetie Belle's begging face and her singing, and Dash and Scoots was just too adorable to handle. Gonna miss that scooter though.

I can't even describe how happy this episode made me  Seeing Dash and Scootaloo bond is something I have been waiting for for a very long time, and it was done perfectly. Actually brought a tear to my eye when Rainbow Dash held Scootaloo with her wing, and then when she was helping her to fly.....it was perfect.

Also, Luna entering ponies dreams? I approve of this

there has to be remixes of that 99 buckets of oats song. Seriously, it needs to happen.

Anywho, my heart literally imploded with feelings because of Rainbow Dash becoming Scootaloo's mentor.

Plus that wing hug was adorable. ngl, second best episode of the season for me, the first being One Bad Apple.

Also, if we go with the Backstory via Lauren Faust mentioned up thread re: AJ and AB being orphans, that's the sort of thing that tends to tightly bond siblings and drown out rivalry. It also goes a long way to explain AJ's maturity, she probably started playing the mom role to Apple Bloom way too young.

As for Scootaloo, my money's on only child, not orphan. No reason, just gut instinct.

Alright, I just finished watching the episode. I had seen zero spoilers about it before, so I had no idea what to expect... and just like last week, I was pleasantly surprised!

First, I loved how it was a Scootaloo-centered episode. T'was about time she got her own episode! enjoyed the siblings bonding, but especially the bonding between Scootaloo and RD! I just wished we'd learn more about Scootaloo's background/family etc. Oh well, maybe for another episode!

As for the episode, is it just me or are the episodes getting darker? I mean, don't get me wrong, I personally love it, but I can imagine a 5 year old girl could get scared by the headless horse. Anyway. Another thing I didn't expect was to see Luna appear! So apparently she enter ponies dreams? Nice! It's cool to see a bit more concerning her role as the princess of the night other than guarding Canterlot at night!

Finally, there were tons of other funny things in the episode, like Sweetie Belle's buckets of oat song or Scootaloo unconsciously avoiding all the dangerous obstacles while sleeping on her scooter. Overall this was a great episode. The season had a bit of a slow start in my opinion, but since last week's episode it really seems to be going great.

This episode gets a solid 8.5 from me.

and finally, here's screenshot of Scootaloo being extremely photogenic while sleeping on her scooter

I don't think they'd have released an episode for halloween this late :P, its not meant to be though no. The "Halloween episode' Was the Luna episode(Forget the name right now).

Its just a setting they used that is a great way to get Scootaloo and Rainbow dash time together.

Storys by a campfire is a pretty common thing, regardless of when. And the headless horse was referenced in "Look before you sleep".
