GreyScholar 1,584 January 26, 2013 Share January 26, 2013 snip What is funny about the complaint about people making us grow up too fast is the fact that in years past you were needed to grow up even sooner. In many societies you are considered an adult and made to make a living at around age 14, and by such standards it could be said we are allowed to grow up too slowly. Veylon 255 January 26, 2013 Share January 26, 2013 I've always thought the hate from adults against Bronies was bizarre. When I was a teen, the whole terror was that teens were watching/playing grown-up stuff and that was bad. Back in the nineties, parents would've killed to have their teens watching MLP instead of...whatever it was that was so bad back then. Mortal Kombat, maybe? I always find it interesting to compare and contrast to someplace like Japan where cartoons and videogames seemingly never had an age limit. It's very hard to be concerned about whatever social thingy is scary when there's some other place where it's normal and everything's fine. I've gotten very cynical about the whole "Oh, no, somebody is doing ______, let's all panic!" routine.
Moon Rat 4,772 January 26, 2013 Share January 26, 2013 in all honesty, those people have grown up WAAAYYYYY to fast and because of that they feel that everyone else HAS to follow that to look more mature..... another reason may be because they themselves were denied the luxury of having a childhood so they end up teasing others who still watch that kind of stuff on TV the final one is, like most of you said on here, sheer stupidity.... they just want SOME kind of reaction out of you and they'll do whatever it takes to do so.. but honestly, it's just more of the fact that THEY were told that "once you grow to be a certain age, you're not allowed to do that anymore or else..." which is really quite sad Thank you Nas for the sig :3 #HugWoona
Gone Airbourne 21,977 January 28, 2013 Share January 28, 2013 Well said, well said! I was talking to one of my co-workers about this very topic actually. This girl brought up something about spongebob with someone else, as we were working. I turned and said, I loved the old spongebob episodes and they looked at me questioningly. They asked, do you actually still watch that? I responded, Heck yeah from time to time if I see an old episode I like I will watch it. I said, there is no wrong in watching cartoons as an adult! She simply said, yeah that is kinda weird... I was kind of agitated from what she had said but nonetheless I ignored her comment. I despise how society has to box things up into categories. I ignore anything that society has to say and I will do as I please.
Hansel 1,512 January 28, 2013 Share January 28, 2013 (edited) Funny this should be posted, I'm actually writing an essay on why adults do watch "children's" cartoons. I'm too lazy to go into it in too much detail, but I will say that cartoons being viewed as "just for children" isn't true for every country. I believe in France, for example, cartoons and animation is highly respected, and seeing middle-classed business men on the train reading graphic novels on the way to work is fairly common. But I'm not French, so I don't really know how true that is. [rant] As an animation student, I despise the fact that cartoons and 2D animation are viewed as a "minor art form" by the general public in many parts of the world. However, what I hate even more is the "just for kids" notion. I have so many issues with it. What does it even mean? The "just" is so patronising. It makes it sound as if it should be treated with less respect simply because it's targeted at a younger audience. I never hear anyone say, "Oh, it's just for adults". Well, not in the same sense, anyway. The worst thing about it is this kind of attitude is that it effects the industry as well. "Well, it's just for kids, so I suppose we don't have to put as much effort into the narrative. They won't mind being treated ." (Yeah, I'm looking at you, British children's entertainment.) Yes, there are many fantastic cartoons and children's media out there, and I hate the fact that if you're above a certain age, you're told that you shouldn't consume it. I hate the fact that many societies look down on cartoons and see it as a less valuable source of entertainment. Most of all, I hate the fact that in doing so, that in treating it as a "just", they look down on children as well. [/rant] Now excuse me, I'm gonna go and find out when the next episode of Gravity Falls is gonna air, and then finish re-reading Alice In Wonderland again. Grr. Fear my rebelliousness. khaine21x3 789 January 28, 2013 Share January 28, 2013 People think that watching content that contains sex and violence is the norm for adults these days so they vilify anyone who doesn't meet societal norm.I don't hate tv series/games/movies that contains sex&violence but the market is just way oversaturate with those kinda stuff that I can no longer derive any excitement from watching most of them. Virulence 254 February 14, 2013 Share February 14, 2013 Theres nothing wrong with adults watching cartoons. I think it still makes them still be a kid inside. Who just wants to grow up and not ever have memories of being a kid? Not me. When I'm an adult, I still plan to watch cartoons and of course MLP. No one should think that adults are weak because of this. Kelvocity 211 February 14, 2013 Share February 14, 2013 (edited) There is a blatantly and stupidly simple answer that none of us like but have to accept: Society. Its pretty annoying, but it exists, has its odd rules, and many try to follow that main path of acceptance. That's pretty much where any hate would stem from.. But, I'm still a kid (or teenager, whatever) and I'm homeschooled, so I'm pretty fine right now. EDIT: By the way, I don't see too much prejudice against adults watching cartoons. I'm not sure where you are, but I'm not there. Then again I'm not an adult so whatever. Edited February 14, 2013 by Kelvocity Wait for it... FoxyCryptid 4,330 December 1, 2013 Share December 1, 2013 (edited) I've noticed it tends to come from this attitude that assumes someone can't be "mature" if they like things that could be viewed as "kiddie" or "immature". It's a strangle fallacy of assuming someone's taste in entertainment or hobbies has any bearing on their emotional maturity and ability to function as an adult. Which is stupid, and sometimes makes me wonder if the people acting this way are just so insecure in themselves that they have to surround themselves with adult content 24/7 to feel like a grown-up. King Sejong 859 December 1, 2013 Share December 1, 2013 Most adults in my time thought that anime was childish, because of Astro boy, Kimba the White Lion, Speed Racer Sailor Moon and Pokemon, while they ignored mature anime like Dragon Balls, and Studio Ghibli films such as Princess Mononoke, and as more mature anime appeared the myth that anime was for children only came apart. If you say it's for kids, people are going to believe it is for kids, and would unnecessary assail adults for enjoying something made for children, and that is the limitation of their vision, Walt Disney made his films to appeal to everyone, and in a lot of ways to adults, who had time and money to go to the cinema, thus have forgotten that such films with mature images were meant for families, where the parents actually participated in their child's lives, and would nurture and explain certain images to their child, and what did the scene mean, cartoons are visual stories just like live action media, so should have more respect and appreciated for the art that it is, and the literature the cartoon brings to the audience, most adults I know are so insecure and status oriented, they would pass their insensitivity on to other people their age, being an adult is not about doing responsible things; it's about understanding your past, to have a present and motivated to pursue an extraordinary future, which could come from that warm feeling you saw and would see over again to draw inspiration, for we have MLP and we watch it as a child at heart, with an adult spirit. . It's weird, apparently watching cartoons aimed at kids as an adult is "sick and wrong" but it's perfectly fine for a 7 year old to play FPS games and it's also apparently fine for young girls to wear that crop top and high heels. But to me, watching adult stuff like pornography and graphic violence, even as an adult, is A LOT WORSE.

Lord Midnight Madness 1,544 December 31, 2018 Share December 31, 2018 I don't understand what the big deal is about adults watching cartoons. I watch FIM, Star vs The Forces of Evil, Kick Buttowski and Gravity Falls. Those are all considered kid tv shows. I also watch the Simpsons and Family Guy. Those are considered adult cartoons. I like almost all cartoons. I also got my dad to watch some of the cartoons as well lol. He won't ever get on board with FIM though. Midnight Solace 5,132 December 31, 2018 Share December 31, 2018 (edited) Blame it on society. They choose what is considered as "normal" and what isn't. Dreambiscuit 10,093 December 31, 2018 Share December 31, 2018 I never could understand why something that's drawn is somehow childish while something that's 'live' is somehow adult. Cartoons have humor, often with sly nods specifically meant for an adult audience, lots of creativity and the beauty of art. In the end it's all entertainment and to toss cartoons into a category limited to one age demographic is absurd. Good writing, acting and production appeal to a universal audience, not just kids. To think otherwise is narrow-minded 'taught' perception from people who follow the wrong crowd and don't think things through for themselves.
