Your thoughts on "opposites attract" pairings?

For me, it depends on the pairing.

The reason I like Flutterdash so much is because I feel that even though they have opposite personalities, they help bring out the best in each other.

However, I'm not too big on "opposites attract" ships that involve the couple at each other's throats all the time and instead bring out the worst in each other.

I said this in another thread like 3 seconds ago, but anyways...

I don't like ships in general. Opposites attract ships generally make the characters seem out of place. Like, Trixie would never think of loving Twilight. A relationship between Dash and Flutters would probably end up being a pretty abusive relationship.

Gonna say I dont like them very much.

I guess they can work out. It all depends how it's done, it can be done right and it can be done wrong.

In math, a positive and a negative equal a negative. While a negative and a negative, or positive and positive will equal a positive.

That's irrelevant, math is evil, and shipping is not.

Well, honestly, unless its been heavily implied by the creators/writers(No, before you say it, FlutterDash is NOT canon.) then...well, this.

I have to say, what is all the fascination about shipping? I'm sure there are some deep psychological reasons why shipping is so popular...even though I don't really get it, but on topic:

My opinion on opposites attract is simply this: Everything is subjective!

I could find valid ways to persuade for and against this view, as well as a view that holds this true as well as similar personalities attract. The answer is there really is no right answer.

And then there is also this! =

"The ironic thing is that the claim "Everything is subjective" is a claim that all subjectivists agree on, and so by implication they contradict themselves by all agreeing on the truth of this particular claim. It turns out, then, that subjectivism is really an ideology of its own in the guise of radical skepticism."

EDIT: I think opposites attract could be too vague. Now, a full personality test and profile taking multiple factors into account would be better suited to pair people up. What is "opposite" anyway? Personalities are just too complicated to be compared either opposite of another or the same. It's an easy way out to a complicated psychological process!

While my favorite pairing always has been and always will be Pinkiedash, where they have a fair amount in common, I've always loved exploring pairings like Flutterdash, Twipie, Raridash and Rarijack just because

1: They are often cute :)

2: They are often hilarious :)

3: And sometimes these "opposites" aren't quite as opposite as they would appear (I'm looking at you, Rarity and Rainbow) and it is fun to explore the depths of a set of characters by looking at similarities between them that I hadn't considered before.

That's assuming you're using multiplication and division. I would argue that opposites being able to attract is based more on addition and subtraction actually.

On those specific ships? No opinion. On the theory of "opposites attract" in romance? Bullishit! Pardon my French.

I never got how those kinds of relationships work. I understand they exist, and that the two shouldn't be (at least total) clones of each other. But personally, my first girlfriend and I had many things in common with each other and had similar temperaments. Our commonalities only increased as we dated. And now, even though the relationship ended, she's one of my most trusted friends and confidants.

Even the girl I'm . . . . interested in/proto-dating is like me. Maybe not as much in interest or even temperament  but priorities. Though in the temperament case, it's less like we clash and more like; she's akin to Fluttershy and she sees me as Shining Armor! cool.png

So rather than being adversely attracted to somepony I have NOTHING in common with. I prefer the "birds of a feather" theory on romance.

i think they are pretty hilarious. i have no idea why but the thought of Gilda and Fluttershy being together in a relationship is funny. i think its the complete lack of logic behind some of them that makes them funny to me. Even when the shippings are executed perfectly they are still funny.

I love 'em.Tom brings out the best in Rarity, after all.A charismatic and beautiful pony like Rarity meshes well with the rock-solid stability and "ugly on the outside, beautiful on the inside" schtick that Tom has going on for him.

^^ Hahaha nice.

You know it's always been portrayed that in gay relationships (when two men or two women) that there's often the masculine one and the effeminate one. While that may be a cliche and be just as false as it is true there's definitely examples in life with it working that way. JUST as having two people who are very similar also happens a lot and does work out too. So there's nothing with shipping two positives or opposites as they can be realistic relationship in reality and in fantasy. Either way the show has whole episodes where they've looked at two characters hanging out well or fighting and they end up friends at the end of the day (or more when fandom enters). :)

Complete opposites don't work, but no main character pairing involves complete opposites. For example, the opposite of Rainbow Dash would be a Grey Ooze; that pairing would just be silly.

And really, sometimes pairings are meant to be silly, or just weird. If it doesn't make sense to you just don't take it seriously or don't read the fic (or look at the pictures etc.). Other times they expand the personality or backstory of one or both characters and the new information makes the pairing less unusual. Or they could just do it... there doesn't always need to be a clear reason for everything, and as they say love is blind.

So enjoy it, or ignore it, or run around screaming because someone on the internet disagrees with you (Not saying this thread is like that, but it is an option). I've personally enjoyed fics that centered around RariJack and TwiDash just as well as any other.
