What the,,,it's like 9 of the 10 people immediately above me are voting for Applejack over Twilight. I had a hunch that the people who normally post here would favor AJ. But I didn't think it would be by such a wide margin. Anyway, it doesn't look like I need to write out a short pep talk on behalf of my pick for this match...which is AJ by the way.  

 

Still, despite the lopsided comments, the actual voting is much closer. With my vote counted, AJ presently leads Twilight 27-22.

Alright, so glad to see that Applejack's leading by five as opposed to two when I posted earlier. Applejack might actually have a chance. I wholeheartedly thank Magical Mystery Cure.

I always honestly thought that Twilight had more fans than AJ. It must be all the Applejack episodes, and Magical Mystery Cure. Twilight loses fans, aj gains some.

My vote's in for AJ, but Twilight fans should definitely not count her out yet. It's still very early, and it's likely a lot of the AJ supporters simply got here early to get their votes in. Not to mention it's already back to a 2 point difference. This isn't over by a long shot.

I'm liking the results up to this point. Applejack is obviously a superior character. She could use the spotlight for a change. It is rather surprising though, had expected Twilight to be far up front. Perhaps the Twi fans come out later?

Applejack beats Twilight on all of her likable qualities. When she's adorkable, it's way less expected and therefore more cute (APPLE FAMILY REUNION), she's got a lot of practical intelligence, she's a capable leader, has a more measured and analytical mind than most of the other members of the Mane 6....

 

And plus, it's way more exciting if AJ wins, no?

Yeah, in my opinion, the only reason Twi is losing is because Magical Mystery Cure. If it wasn't for half of the bronies overreacting, Twilight would be a hoof-in for the championship.  My problem with AJ is that she  like the cliche farmgirl. GO TWILIGHT!

 

Edit: Also, Y U NO have Starswirl in the bracket? He could have had a FGCU-like run!

Cliché? Nonono. Please. She's anything but that. Twilight's personality overall has gone downhill, AJ's has improved greatly, showing Responsibility and Maturity, which honestly, the rest of the Mane 6 lack of.

And Twilight Sparkle isn't the cliche perfect student by the same token? Applejack, especially in later seasons, is a levelheaded businesspony and one of the least "simple-minded" of any of the Mane 6. She encouraged RD to read in Read It And Weep and, ever since Applebuck Season, seems to be pretty good at mathematics:

aj fills a needed role in the show, but twilight is by far the superior character. aj also is in fact a very simple character, and that's ok, her aspirations? farm apples, her occupation? oh, right, she's already completed her aspirations. her character is a catalyst to move the plot along when it needs a workhorse.

 

really people, aj is cool and all, but twilight has been the primary driving force for the whole series, no two ways about it.

I completely disagree. Applejack's prime trait is honesty. She didn't go to stay with Cherry Jubilee because she "didn't win first place". It was because she had promised to bring Ponyville prize money so they could repair the Town Hall, which she ended up not doing. She had their best interests at heart and didn't want to see them disappointed, so she began working the cherry orchard to earn the money. There's the self-sacrifice element involved. If that's not an act of maturity, and taking matters into your own hands, then what is?

Neither of the two gets full credit. Rainbow Dash wouldn't have read the book if Twilight hadn't suggested it, sure, but neither would she have read it if it wasn't multiple ponies recommending it. They're both equally creditable.

This is the contextual element. Remember that Applejack is assumed to be non-versed in academic areas, we were given that hint in Applebuck Season. The fact that she's even working with numbers, two seasons later, shows self-improvement. And that's a very admirable trait in any pony.

then what is? something like say... working the orchard she already runs at home and making money more directly without a cut being removed, that way she'd get it done faster. also on the matter of honesty, it is NOT honest to refuse to fess up when you've failed, in fact it's a bold faced lie, just like she did later in that same episode. yes, she did in fact break that promise, it was to tell at breakfast, skipping breakfast is skipping the promise, thus dishonest.

 

aj is still cool and all, but that ep is one of the biggest failings possible for her character

 

edit; ok you added some, i'll cede your last point on the math, but the book, yes twi gets higher cred. if twi hadn't gotten the book, it'd make no sense for any of the others to do so.

gonna say something here, and it's one of the, if not THE, biggest gripe i have with this fandom; headcannon does NOT count. show me evidence of deeper complexity from the show, not someone's headcannon.
