First reactions to Discord

"One of the better antagonists" I agree but it also must be said that between a wrathful, potentially violent Griffin, easily outwitted troll stand-ins, and a showboating stage magician, his competition in that area isn't what I would call particularly "fierce." ^_^ I actually thought Mephiles was a pretty good villain too. Especially when you consider both his and Iblis' names are pseudonyms for the Devil. Not to mention being one of the few, if not only, villain to KILL Sonic!

He's voiced by Dan Green. So...you know how it is.

I'm an old TNG fan, so I knew going into the second season that John de Lancie would be voicing Discord. The writers played it pretty straight that this was a large shout out to de Lancie's role as Q, and I really enjoyed that they brought together a perfect storm of cast, character, and story in order to make that reference applicable. Aside from de Lancie being Q, I can also enjoy Discord as a character due to his cunning, villainous nature, whereas as most of the previous antagonists were either mindless and/or comically incompetent in one form or another. It's unfortunate that they had to rush the ending along; Discord had the mane six on the ropes from start to finish but got rolled by a deus ex machina. I'm not complaining too terribly much, though his end did not seem befitting for a character who, for all of his chaos, managed to stay several steps ahead of everyone.

As others have mentioned, I would like to see Discord brought back in some form or another. He's the ultimate demon of Equestria, and given his insidious nature, it would be plausible that he planned in advance should the mane six have succeeded in using the Elements of Harmony against him.

For now, we can enjoy the memories of chocolate rain and upside down Ponyville.

When I first saw him, he seemed like the most different thing in the pony universe that I'd seen, which wasn't a bad thing.

The Discord episodes ended up as perhaps my most favorite episodes, since Discord is pretty much Q from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

It is pretty impressive that "Discord is Q" is a very workable possibility. I would argue that the Deus Ex Machina of Celestia's Letters was a bit justified. Celestia is pretty much IS God in the story telling sense if nothing else. So it is a literal Deus Ex Machina, and even then, Twilight still had to round everypony up. Which, as we know, was a task much easier said than done.

I was kind of intimitated by Discord at first and thought there might actually be a new big bad guy for the ponies to whip on (silly, I know) but after he's defeated I figured he's nothing but a big fat phony.

He really does look pretty cool, especially in the world of ponies. I wouldn't mind if they had him unthaw just so they could beat him a second time and banish him to the moon with Luna.

I liked him. When I first saw him I thought he would be just another stupid cartoon villain but he proved me wrong. He has style and I don't see him as a very evil guy. He seems more like a good troll who enjoys to prank and make chaos and don't want to seriously harm someone. Also he gives the mane6 a fair chance to beat him( I think he knew that sooner or later it would happen and he just enjoyed testing and pranking them as long as he could). Also his voice acting is cool :)

Very true. As I said, I don't begrudge its usage since the story would otherwise have been nearly impossible to conclude in a timely and effective manner. After all, Discord practically possessed godlike powers; and he could have won rather easily from the outset, yet chose to toy around with the mane six.

I always find it interesting when a show with a formula manages to disturb that formula just enough to make you think that the main characters will actually lose. Discord had that going for 1 3/4 of the 2 part episode, yet had to at last stumble when the mane six finally turned it around.

If anything, Celestia gets the last laugh by using her powers to upend Discord unexpectedly, similar to how he trolled her at the beginning of the story.

My first reaction was literally

"It's Q! Q is messing with Ponies now!"

I think Discord is a great character! Evil but playful, he actually was only entertaining himself. I could have said playing, instead of entertaining, but that would have sounded WAY WRONG!

Well, it was my first episode so: "I was wrong. I was so f***ing wrong. This is so badass" or something along those lines. (when I said I was wrong I was referring to how I used to think mlp was a little girl's show.

I thought Discord was a humorous, yet threatening and dangerous villian. However, I don't know about you guys, but I found it really creepy that he controlled the ponies like puppets in the staingless image of him.

It's not just you. It also doesn't help that the Tarot representation of the Devil depicts over people wrapping them in chains. Now swap chains for puppet strings! Oh and lastly . . . listen closely at 5:50, as Celestia says the line "Unrest and Unhappiness" and the camera goes to just that window. You may hear something you didn't the first time . . .

  • 6 months later...

Whoo boy, where do I begin <3

I loved him. I loved the fact he was an Ancient Evil trope that had been sitting in Celestia's garden, unknown to most ponies that it was more than just a statue, and I loved his character and design. Coincidentally I watched his counterpart Q with my mom, who loves Star Trek, and really enjoyed seeing the large similarities between the two characters, as well. But overall, Discord had the ability to be potent, but also funny, something Nightmare Moon and just about every other character in the show previously had failed to pull off in such a well-done way.

Discord was a pretty good villein. He had some pretty cool powers, had a plan to make sure the elements weren't used on him, and was crazy.

The 2 top things I like about him was that he was a creature that looked chaotic and the fact that he was a guy. It just feels like their weren't any good male villains in the show before he came along.

Never have I seen the heroes of a story try to resist a villain that so utterly "beyond" themselves.

Im guessing you haven't seen bleach? Ulquiorra was god mod compared to ichigo at this point and ichigo got totally owned.Posted Image But Discord was awesome. The second I heard his voice I was like Well they're boned. Q pony is best pony. As a big star trek fan discord is one of my favorite characters of all time. Edited by Nikorasu Moon Lancer Sora

When I first saw the statue of him, and Cherilee was explaining him, I was thinking, "say chimera, say chimera, say chimera!"

Cherilee: "Discord"

Me: Damn, I didn't get it

not my fault he looks like a chimera.

you know what Discord reminded me of was Joker from Dark Knight. they are both out to turn society against itself, they both have no real plans they just do stuff to do stuff, they are unpredictable as hell, they are also cocky but have a right to be as they are two of the best villains. these are just my thoughts after seeing Discord

By the time I joined the brony fandom, the "Last Roundup" had already been aired, so I was quite behind on all the ruckus. I specifically didn't look upon spoilers so the episodes would surprise me, but that didn't mean I didn't catch glimpses, considering his own little fandom.

The first thing that came up to me was "damn, shitty character design!", but in the end it grew up on me. Not to mention his character was plain out awesome, and what I really liked was the dark comical aura that hung around him. That is, unless he got bored of just goofing around (the stained glass depicts him burning the ponies in some fire?), then shit get's real...

John De Lancie also did an excellent job of voicing him so yes, I did like him.

Having said that all, I still think Chrysalis is a better villain, but I disliked how quickly she got defeated. :/
