Ah, yes. Sketches. What would you consider a sketch? For me, a sketch is the basic form of the final thing, something that will help you reach the end. For me, sketches are dirty and messy, but are still very time-consuming. Your sketches seem to be more clean. Do you erase all of the unnecessary lines when you've got the outline? I sort of do that, except I draw over them a little more when working traditionally. Here's sort of what I do that I consider a sketch: http://sta.sh/01tg76tpaqhf

 

Sketches, in my definition of them, take 30-60 minutes. What you're doing that you call sketches, compared to that, isn't really that slow. I take about 8-24 hours in drawing anything from beginning to end. You're not that slow, is my point.

Woah, woah, woah. What do you mean? You don't use guidelines, circles, anything to help you get a sense of where the body will be? Are you using references? That's the only way I can think that you're doing what I think you're doing without going completely insane. If you're doing what I think you're doing, not even using guidelines, you'll never learn that way.

No, I just didn't explain it right. I definitely use circles/guidlines and I always use a reference. I was just talking about the way I draw my lines.

Oh, I see. Yes, you should make lighter strokes with the pencil and more lines. Don't get too worried about erasing unless you draw so many lines that they keep getting in your way. The lines for a sketch are just guidelines, not the finished thing. When your guidelines are done, you can mark the outline with strokes that have more pressure on them, following the guidelines that the sketch mark give you. Remember: The sketch phase is the part where you're supposed to make the most mistakes. Notice how I did not say "all" of the mistakes. You'll get a chance at correcting them later. And if something starts to look nice, but isn't exactly what you planned, don't be afraid to experiment.

Hello! I can see you have quite a line built up. And I gotta say, I really like the two that you've finished so far and if you don't mind I'd love if you could draw my OC. BTW his cutie mark is a bit ineligible on this picture, but it's basically a two atom rings surrounding a pair of dice. As any additional details, (Optional of course.) a red or even gold colored bow tie and a dark colored fedora, (Brown, black, dark grey, etc.) Anywho, take your time and here he is!
