Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Pulls off being both a superhero movie and kind of a spy movie, along with being more of a sequel to the original Cap than I expected while still riding pretty well on Avengers aftermath. Plus it totally blows Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World out of the water that's for sure... loved it. :D

Finally got around to seeing Nebraska. A very charming movie about a man seeking his millions. Much of the film takes places in the little town of Hawthorne, Nebraska where father Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) and son David Grant (Will Forte) stay with relatives while on their way to Lincoln, Nebraska to claim the million dollar sweepstakes marketing prize. The real magic behind this black and white film is how relatable its characters are. From the naive aunt to the silent TV obsessed uncle, to the Uncle who just sits and watches life go by to the troublesome cousins who just don't seem to have a full brain between them. Everybody can see a family member in this film and I think that's what makes this movie so charming.

Seen A Most Wanted Man, last completed film role of Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Really enjoyed it, it's based on the John le Carre novel (same guy who wrote Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy book and loads of others) so it's all about spies. What I like about it is it's a proper spy film, not the Hollywood idea of a spy who's anything but secretive, runs around blowing stuff up with huge explosions and having gun fights and is always played by some sexy suave person who totally stands out from everyone else. That's part of what I like, our main character is someone older, overweight and regular, I have a real thing for older guys in movies...wait, that didn't come out right  but I like it when the protagonist isn't your typical looking Hollywood star. Great performance by Seymour Hoffman, really going to miss him  :(  as much as I loved someone like Robin Williams the truth is the man hadn't been doing anything great career wise for a while (World's Greatest Dad the last thing), so in terms of new films and performances there's a lot less lost in comparison to someone like Hoffman who was still putting out fantastic stuff like this and someone I always like seeing even in smaller supporting roles in films. Very nice directing too, from Antoine Corbjin. I hadn't seen The American or Control so his work wasn't overly familiar to me, but must say I was impressed.

I watched "The Life of Pi" in school this week for my English class. (I have to write a paper on it now... so that kinda sucks the fun out of watching movies in school). We finished it today.

I did like it :), although I thought it got a little boring at times and kinda confusing towards the end. The story was really sad though, and I'm not a fan of sad parts in movies :(

James Gandolfini, of "Sopranos" fame, stars in his final film along side Tom Hardy in, "The Drop", a high paced and intense gangster film directed by Michael R. Roskam.

Bob Saginowski (Hardy), and his cousin Marv (Gandolfini), run a Brooklyn dive bar that is owned by Chechen gangsters, who use the bar as a "drop" point for money laundering. When Bob finds an abused pit bull puppy discarded in the trash can of a woman by the name of Nadia (Noomi Rapace), Bob soon finds that Nadia's past will become problematic for the both of them. A man named Eric Deeds (Matthias Schoenaerts), an ex psycho ward patient who once dated Nadia, claims the puppy is his. Deeds makes life difficult for Bob, as do the Chechen gangsters, who are not too happy that the bar gets robbed. As if life for Bob could not get any worse, a cold case detective is snooping around, looking for answers.

This plot, though mildly predictable, gains some very intriguing twists at the end. The scenes for one character in particular, prophetically become darker and darker. As a whole, despite a few slow spots in here and there, the music and the pacing makes the film very high strung for the audience. Though one of the plotlines is left open, this creates a sense of realism, as sometimes the authorities never do catch the criminal.

Hardy and Gandolfini are definitely the best actors in the film. The audience can sense an almost foreigner angle from the character of Bob Saginowski, while the character of Marv holds the token gangster aura that is James Gandolfini. Hardy brings to Bob, the characterization of a man who hasn't done the right thing in the past, but is really trying to make up for it now. He seems like a foreigner not only in accent, but in his own life. He tends to the bar, tries not to make waves, and all he really wants in life is normalcy.

While the costuming is a bit cliché ranging from creepy black leather for the Chechen gangsters to blue collar wool-lined denim coat and work boots for Bob, the dialogue is anything but. While a few puns are made here and there, most of the delivery of the dialogue is said with such seriousness, the audience could believe these characters were real. What makes them most real is how human they are. They don't feel like Hollywood actors, they feel like real people, with real problems, who are just trying to get by with life when life is hard. The protagonists aren't exactly the good guys here and the antagonist end up not being such a bad person himself. This provides a very humanistic characterization, where everybody has times in their past that they're not so fond of.

This is definitely one of Gandolfini's best films, and Gandolfini himself partly saves the film with his acting alone. For this who enjoy fast paced, and ruthless gangster films where the good guys are not such nice people themselves, this is definitively that film.  A strong 3.5 out of 5 stars, this movie definitely makes the audience yearn for more Gandolfini.

@, Nice to see a decent write up for The Drop. I'll definitely give it a watch when it makes its way over here, your review kinda sums up what I thought from seeing the trailer: ok movie with very good actors pulling it up a bit. I can always be won over by a decent performance.

Do you think people would really be clamouring for more Gandolfini? Obviously a terrible loss, but do you think he'd ever have been able to offer something, or given the chance to at least, outside of the gangster role? Or as a leading man? That being said I actually thought his role in Killing Them Softly was fantastic and severely overlooked.

Last movie I watched was Akira. Not the kind of movie I would normally watch, but it was pretty good.

Best Anime Ever.

(Besides Neon Genesis Evangelion and Death Note.)

The last movie I watched was called 1,000,000 ways to die in the West, I'm pretty sure.

It was a pretty funny movie, it had it's charms and was generally enjoyable!

I love that Back to the Future Part III reference in the movie. BttF3 is in my top five movies.

Good Morning, Vietnam. And I regret nothing. :derp:

Did you watch it when it was on AMC?

Rarity is the best thing in my life.

Where would I be without her? Nowhere I'd like to be, that's for sure.
