Why the 19th century dress?

I mean, I get that she's from a society that isn't that far past the early 20th century, most of the time. But why can't Twi just get away with a shirt and pants? Plus, I'd imagine her Cutie Would have to be on her new body, and there's no way they're showing her thigh. Best place would be a shirt.

Just saying.

I am a Brony. I love being a Brony, Twilight is best pony.

Uhm.

Sorry.

What?

Twilight is wearing a skirt and blouse with a bow-tie. This is something that people wear. Frequently. Generally without the bow tie, yes, but that still doesn't make it a 20th century clothing article. So. Uhm. What?

She also has leg warmers. That would freak anyone out.

Maybe she went to the 1980's, became Olivia Newton-John and EqG is just a remake of Grease?

Yeah, I was gonna say, this is more like 1950's dress. 19th century dress looks like this:

As for why she can't wear just a t-shirt and pants? Well, Equestria itself isn't exactly in line with modern times, for one. Also, having them dress like this makes it a bit more interesting. People complain enough about EqG - and they would only complain more if they really did look like "normal" teenagers.

This was a common dress style in the 80's. That's 1980, not 1880. Leg warmers, short skirt + blouse, and the strange floppy bow tie. I was in University at the time, but the high schools all around has lots of girls dressing that way.

Wouldn't surprise me if the primary character artist grew up in the 80's, and so is duplicating the styles s\he remembers from in high school.

Edit: Actually, it just occurred to me. The MLP franchise *started* in the 80's. Using 80's clothing styles might be a deliberate call-back.

Maybe this style is just "cool" in this high school campus. I like it! And the bow tie, I've seen that sort of dress code in most schools. But about the cutie mark? Maybe each human has his or her own symbol which he or she gets when they enter the school.
