Your Pal Skippy 3 May 21, 2013 Share May 21, 2013 Hi Everybody, I’ve been referred this section of the forums as the most appropriate place for what I’m going to post. I’m currently mulling a (utterly non-scientific) blog article/series of articles about bronies as a subculture – see my thread in the Welcoming Plaza for more on that – and obviously that requires some input from bronies themselves. With that in mind, I’d like to post a short questionnaire here just to get a feel for the demographics of this forum as a representative sampling of bronies. Also included are some more open-ended questions that allow for more robust answers, which may be quoted in my article. Before that, however, I should probably give a little information about myself. I’m a social services worker with a background in political science. Perhaps more importantly, I’m an off-again, on-again blogger who writes rather haphazardly about pop culture, b-movies, and cultural skepticism. I’m also a frequent guest on the pop culture-centric comedy podcast Joe’s Awesome and Tommy Hates Everything. I am not a cultural anthropologist, however, and my interviewing skills are admittedly limited – my analytical training focused mostly on chunking huge amounts of data into SPSS and letting the computer do the heavy lifting. Please keep that in mind if my questions seem poorly constructed, leading, or otherwise subpar. 1.) How old are you? 2.) What is your level of educational attainment? 3.) What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) Those are the questions I have for now, although if the response to these questions is robust, I’ll likely be back with more questions about other aspects of brony culture. Once again, I’d like to extend my thanks in advance to everyone who chooses to participate. Love and Peace, -Skippy

Throwaway19573639385 764 May 21, 2013 Share May 21, 2013 (edited) How old are you? I'm currently 19 years and 2 months old What is your level of educational attainment? At the moment I am having finals, my goal is to go to university and study IT with Advanced Mathematics What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? Slavonic culture, I'm both a nerd and a geek. I'm a big fan of doctor who, a furry, Invader Zim fan, Anime fanatic and gamer. What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? I checked the show out because I wanted to. The show was of great quality, you've probably heard all about it. The main thing that made me stay was the fandom though. The entertainment both the creative works and the other fans provide. Just the general community, it's really awesome. Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? Not my primary, but they take a big part of my time I spend on the internet. What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? 30-40% of my time spend on the internet would be related to MLP. Outside of that I don't spend a lot of time on ponies. Sure I draw and talk a lot about MLP with my friends but not exclusively. I'd say that would be about 5-10% of my free time per week. What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? A big part, plenty of them have been introduced by the show because of me and a friend of mine. I'd say about half are bronies themselves. If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? Yes I do have told them about the fandom. Sure they thought it was a bit odd at first but they're pretty open-minded so they didn't really mind at all. Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) Hey, you either love ponies, hate them or don't care at all. There's just a lot of hype around ponies and especially around making the fans rage, but it's the internet, it's always like this. Soon enough they'll find a different target to spew their hate on. Currently the brony fandom is the target of ridicule because we're simply just too awesome not to be noticed. But who cares anyway? I don't feel like the fandom is stigmatized at all. Just common hate-hype going on. Edited May 21, 2013 by Winterbass
Celtore 2,770 May 21, 2013 Share May 21, 2013 (edited) Oh boy, random survey! 3...2..1.. GO! 1.) How old are you? I am 21 years old. 2.) What is your level of educational attainment? I am a highschool graduate and I am currently attending college. 3.) What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? Trekkie, Star Wars (I identify with both! Let there be peace between the two sides!), Phoenix Wright, Nintendo, pokemon (competitive community), Magic the Gathering and other geeky stuff I probably haven't thought about yet. 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? Truth be told, boredom and simply watching the first episode of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. If I were to trace this back further though, the massive size of the community was what attracted my curiousity that eventually lead to me watching that episode. 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? Nope! Tinkering around with my computer is my primary hobby. I consider it a massive toy and I love to learn new things about it. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? Not much, truth be told. I'm usually busy with other stuff and I'm not really much of an artist... 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? One friend. I have very few close friends though so that isn't too bad as a percentage. 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? I am "out" with my best friend and it didn't change a thing. He refuses to give the show a chance, but we respect each other's stances and life goes on. I haven't told anyone else because the topic never shows up. I think it's rather tactless to walk up to one of my friends and say "hey, I'm a brony" because more than likely, they will just respond "and?..." They probably wouldn't be surprised anyway, I can be pretty eccentric at times... 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) *flees to find a dictionary* On the internet, I feel a majority of the harshest 'critics' are trolls. Before I was a brony, it was these posts that forced me to take a neutral stance because I thought both sides were crazy. You have the one side hating the other for watching an innocent television show and the other side has created an entire fandom for a show with a focus group of very young children. I sort of hid in the middle where it was safe for a while... But yeah, I personally don't think bronies as a group are really stigmatized any more than any other group of a similar size. Betez 1,734 May 21, 2013 Share May 21, 2013 I just turned 15 I'm just in highschool right now Bronies are really the first cultural identity I've associated myself with. The fact that so many people liked ponies made me want to see what was so amazing about it. Not really. Maybe about 40% About 5% maybe I'm "out" with them. They don't really care. Kind of, but I seriously feel like we're making a breakthrough and changing people's opinion about us. 1 My OC Stay pony my friends"And ALWAYS remember...to never forget." - Someone who I'm sure has said this before I did
caramba2654 602 May 21, 2013 Share May 21, 2013 (edited) 1.) How old are you? I'm 16. 2.) What is your level of educational attainment? High School. 3.) What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? Furry. 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? The kind of people. I mean, the concentration of good people here is so much higher! Also, the awesomeness of the fandom. They can take a few episodes and create a million things on top of it. Songs, stories, art, everything. 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? I dunno. I never bought anything MLP related, but a vast majority of my iPod songs are brony songs, and my Youtube history has quite a lot of brony videos. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? I dunno... I spend an hour or two per day looking at ponies. 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? None. 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? One of my friends knows I like ponies, but I don't think he knows what bronies are. Relationship intact, from what I can see. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) I have mixed feelings about it. There's the part of the world that is very convergent and thinks that MLP is only for girls, classical music is boring and staying on the computer the whole day makes you a nerd. They cannot open their eyes to new things, therefore anything extraordinary is stigmatized by them. But on the other hand, there are open-minded people, that may or may not like it, and they acknowledge that it exists and respects it. How many times I was listening to a brony song, and there was a comment like "I'm not a brony and I don't plan to be one, but this fandom makes great music!"? Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? Nope. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? 60% 7.) What is your level of educational attainment? Depends on the education. On paper we could say all I have is year at college. In terms of other things, i guess you could say it's an on going thing but it's getting up there. 3.) What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? None really. I'm used to keeping to myself a lot but becoming a brony has certainly changed that. 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? A wide variety of things based upon various universal parameters. 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? You could say that. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? Most actually. Although i dabble in other things I sometimes get really immersed in my work. 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? The number goes up and down sometimes as friends come and go. But we'd have to define what a friend is. (hmmmm i did make scripture for that...) Then the answer would be 2 maybe three. Sad as that is.... 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? Oh I'm totally out there. I even wear a tail, a custom made pair of jeans and most recently a custom made mlp leather jacket. No one bothers me about it at all but i have to be honest when i say that I do sort of make it look cool. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) I'm not going to say that. For various perspectives to be optimally told. I could simply say that bronies are the most misunderstood part of the fandom. Hate groups or people are in fact out there. We can be as loving and tolerant all we want but that currently is a fact we cannot deny. But hate is really just living and judging things based upon a lot of things that funnel into this thing called ignorance, and what is ignorance other then ignoring your own insecurities and fear and not thinking. Zygen 6,066 May 21, 2013 Share May 21, 2013 1.) How old are you? I am currently 16. 2.) What is your level of educational attainment? I'm a freshman in highschool going into my sophomore year when next year starts. 3.) What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? I guess the fact I'm a bit of a band nerd counts ? Thats probably the most major one, most of my others are not really as terribly important. Or dedicated I guess. 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? The general nice and accepting people of the community here, as far as watching the show I just kinda came across it. Outta curiosity and watched. 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? Eh, not exactly, I spend a good bit of time with band stuff, and I'm also a closet brony and thus not open about my bronyness. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? Um. Something like 45 something like that, I spend a good bit on video games and on band I guess to. Not totally sure how accurate that would be. 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? Well considering I don't exactly have much of any friends exactly, non, but I'm also a closet brony and have never seen any other bronies at school. 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? No i'm not out from them because they don't know. But some of them I know for sure it would affect my companionship with some of my aquaintences. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole? Well to an extent, although I think its not as common that I've seen it. I think over time people have either become bronies or become more accepting of it, but there is a good bit of people who don't like or care for bronies. 2 Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? No 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? Yes I told them I watch mlp and they dont care because its only a tv show. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) Yes and no I feel a lot of bronies kinda make it worse by saying "closet brony" and "coming out" comparing it with a homosexual person admitting their sexual preference even though coming out as a brony is just admitting you watch something on tv and nothing more but people do like to make mountains out of mole hills. Verily British 145 May 21, 2013 Share May 21, 2013 (edited) 1) I am fourteen about two weeks off of being fifteen. 2) S.A.T.s and I am one year away from sitting my GCSEs. 3) Well I'm an atheist so Atheism, I'm a big fan of Star Trek Voyager so a Trekkie sort of and I really like Doctor Who. 4) I looked around the internet for brony related stuff before I watched the show, I stumbled upon this forum and so I decided to give the first episode a try. I was instantly hooked and about an hour later I set up my account on here. 5) To be honest my hobbies change with what I currently like and dislike. At the moment I'm spending most of my free time a) listening to my music, b/ writing my fan fiction and surfing this forum and c) playing on my Xbox and PC. 6) Going from what I put previously around about 33%, perhaps more. 7) I have around 10 friends that I get on with, and only two of them are bronies, although I'm not sure about one I think he might be drifting away from us. 8) Yes I am 'out' about my bronyism with my friends. It changed in the fact that they now constantly remind me that I have 'betrayed my manlihood' and similar stuff. 9) Yes I do. Where ever there is a culture or group there will always be those who hate them. Hopefully one day we will be more largely accepted on the internet and real life, more the internet than real life, but for the moment I'd say yes we are. Hdc 155 May 21, 2013 Share May 21, 2013 (edited) 1.) How old are you? 24. 2.) What is your level of educational attainment? (The equivalent of) High school. Some scattered college courses. 3.) What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? I'm not an active part of any other fandom really, but I am a fan of a lot of stuff. 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? What attracted me to the show: at first, the cute design and the animation. After watching it for a while: the writing and characters. What attracted me to brony culture: The infinite creativity and the friendly attitude. 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? No, not really, but at the moment it takes up the biggest chunk of my free time. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? At the moment: 40-50% 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? None that I know of. I have not made inquiries. 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? I'm not really 'out' simply because it has not been brought up. I'm not scared of telling them though. I doubt it would affect anything if they knew, they are used to me having 'weird' ideas and interests. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) No. However, I imagine that this can be a problem for younger, school-aged bronies. There are some people that find bronies strange, but they are ignorant, misinformed and/or extremely conservative. And in the case of ethnicities, probably Mexican/Latin-American. 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? One of my favorite animator on Flipnote Hatena had posted a few MLP videos. What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? Guild of Metalsmiths Reeactors of things from the 19th century Band Geek 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? Nothing attracted me to it....it just sort of happened because ponies were invading the internet 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? no, other than it being the only "tv" show I watch, I don't consider it a hobby 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? 90%, the other 10% is Minecraft 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? 0% I have no brony friends IRL 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? yes, being a fan of FIM is strange and out of character for me to them, I have lost 5 friends to this. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) Yes, because they assume all bronies are obese adult men who masturbate to ponies, have no job, and live in their parent's basements when they should be out in the world. They also assume if females are fans of the show, it's perfectly normal because it's made for girls. Shanks 10,816 May 22, 2013 Share May 22, 2013 1.)27 2.)Some college (I have plans to go back soon) 3.) Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Nintendo and Sonic to name a few 4.) I just had to find out if Discord was as awesome as this friend of mine said he was 5.) It is one of my primary hobbies, it certainly has taken up alot more of my time and thoughts than I ever thought it would 6.) Probably about half 7.) One of my friends introduced me to it and I found out another friend is into it and the same friend that got me into it is trying to get a mutual friend of ours into it. I don't have a bazillion friends but I do know a few people that are into the show and a few that aren't but at least don't hate on us for being into it. 8.) I treat it no differently than I treat any of my other interests, I don't go out of my way to tell anyone but I don't go out of my way to hide it either. So far it hasn't affected any of my relationships with my friends or anyone else. 9.) Absolutely, bronies have been insulted as everything from overgrown basement dwelling manchildren to homosexuals, and even pedophiles. MrHaru 217 May 22, 2013 Share May 22, 2013 SO MANY OF YOU ARE TEENS HOLY CRAP. I feel old amongst you guys now. Aye. How old are you? 27. I turn 28 in December What is your level of educational attainment? Some college. Never graduated. Don't know if I'll go back since I've no idea what I really wanna do as a career if anything. I work so that's enough for me atm. What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? Oh boy here we go.jpg Gurren Lagann Sonic The Hedgehog These are the 2 biggest I can think up of at the top of my head. Otherwise this question would just turn into 'what do you like?' What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? To answer about MLP: it was the writing. It took me a LOT to be bothered to give MLP a try as so many young adults had also done the same with it but the writing by the 9th episode in Season 1 had won me over. This was CLEARLY not the girly girly pink things cotton candy rainbows' stuff that I remember seeing commercials for in the early 90s. It literally felt (and does still) like a "Cartoon Network" animation merely with the My Little Pony brand name put on it. That fact alone blew my mind and made me appreciate it more. To answer about the Brony culture: Well it was a natural evolution of my being a fan, wasn't it? I'm glad I'm here and I don't think I know a single better fandom anywhere else. Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? Only when it comes to new episodes and new events coming out...for example MLP: Equestria Girls. Other than this I am mostly playing my video games, watching anime or movies, working, or hanging out with friends and being equally geeky with them. MLP is really only big when one of two things happen...1) a new episode comes out so I must share it with ALL OF MY BRONY FRIENDS (including my cousin) or 2) I find a lot of artwork.... ..oh and 3) I go to a convention. What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? Ehh....twenty perce-*shot* Okay for serious, probably 30%. It's one of my favorite things at the moment and I don't see it going away. What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? Quite a number of them. I'm not making a BS percentage for this though. If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? No not really. Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) Yes but it's only because PEOPLE KEEP PERPETUATING THE IMAGE OVER AND OVER that there's something vastly 'wrong with us' or whatever. Which really needs to stop. You could find a lot worse in other, older fandoms.
