Well, I suppose this as good a time as any to announce that I'll be releasing a fanfic this Summer, titled "In the Dark of the Night", with Sombra as the lead villain.  I've given him both a sinister personality and an elegant backstory.  This is the reason I can't really share my thoughts on the matter, because they are now spoilers.  Wait patiently, and I'll have that fic out during the seasonal hiatus.  I'll also have some oneshots that tie into it for the sake of worldbuilding.

 

The story will also have The Great and Powerful Trixie, Flash Sentry, Thunderlane, the Wonderbolts, and many more.  It's gonna be epic!

I agree with you about nightmare moon. I found discord funny and scarier than Sombra. I liked this day Aria. Sombra was the only villain I wanted to come back even do he was dead I made bad fanfics in my head about his return .

While I'll admit Sombra had more potential compared to other villains, he was a little underwhelming for me. Even int he Elements of Harmony book, it's stated he could have done serious damage to Equestria if he was successful. However I tend to judge a character based on who they are and not their potential.

Just chiming in to say that anyone who wants a little more Sombra development should really check out the comics. I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say that the issues with Sombra in them kinda give him more characterization, but also kinda don't.

I guess it just depends on ones perspective when it comes to favorite villains. When it comes to MLP G4, Sombra is by FAR my favorite villain, and I've explained as such in other threads, so I won't bother unless someone asks.

NMM was awful, not a threat, just stole Tirek's original intentions, but instead of being worldwide corruption, Luna does it because she was feeling lonely.

Discord stinks. Just a bland Q rip-off. Nothing original, nor impressive or threatening. Just a jerk who got defeated the same way TWICE.

Chrysalis was basically Ursula from the Little Mermaid, with the army of Scar from the Lion King. Not a threat, and got defeated easily in the most pathetic way. She's also awful in the comics.

Sombra was supposed to be a pony version of Sauron, who is one of the best literary villains. And Sombra is one of the worst cartoon villains of the last decade.

 

Only G4 Tirek was entertaining and evil, and much, MUCH more threatening in comparison. Thanks God we had a scene with the best villain owning the most overrated villain.

Villains dont need to be evil and dark to be good, most of the time it makes them look like mustache twirling jokes, having villains like discord does a good job at seperating mlp from most other modern fay cartoons, like the lich in adventure time, I hated him up until I watched the season 6 premiere, there I thought like he was a character, and not just evil cuz, sombra is nowhere near as bad as other villains in the last decade. he might not of had proper development and all, but thats because it wasnt his episode at all, it was twilights, tirek is by FAR my favorite villain, but thats just because I love him as a character, just like people like discord or bill cipher, if they are fun and causing trouble, then they are evil, they dont need to be trying to mureder someone to prove that, sunset shimmer is the darkest villain of all mlp because she outright said, Twilight got in my way to much, she must die! but she still wasnt a great villain because of that one line.

Tirek threatened to behead a baby dragon, Grogar wanted to seal for all eternity all the ponies into a dark dimension, Arabus left a couple of ponies skinny enough to see their skeletons, Lavan sent his minions to throw some ponies into a volcano, etc.

None of the FiM are extremely dark, because Hasbro has those stupid restricting laws where nothing remotely dark or adult can happen.

 

Also, yeah, Sunset was kinda terrible, but still, very threatening. Until she said out loud her plan. The most stupid plan I've ever heard.

The never outright said they were going to kill them implying it isnt the same as saying it. Discord was plenty evil, he literally made equestria impossible to live in, chrysalis was going to take over!, NMM was going to create eternal night.

I think Sombra would have been awesome if he had been designed kind of like Darth Vader, or an evil imperialist. More concerned with power, and doing anything to get it. He deserved a movie and got minimal scenes in what he was in.
